The Job of a Furnace Filter

Filed under Ventilation | No Comments

Furnace filters are intended to satisfy a single function.  Specifically, they are made to diminish the quantity of household dirt that passes through the furnace and circulates through your house. The dust that is within the air in your home can be made from many completely different things such as pet dander, mildew and dried human or pet skin.

At the essential level, the job that a furnace filter is meant to try to do is  straightforward.  The basic principle is that a furnace filter traps irritants that are circulating in the air in your house.  The way this works is somewhat more detailed then that straightforward description however.  Filters that catch particles permit air to freely flow and consequently catch only the largest particles.  Filters that catch the smallest particles can become promptly clogged and place a severe strain on the furnace’s blower motor which may cause needless wear and tear on your furnace resulting in expensive repairs.

You want to search out furnace filters that are able to achieve correct air flow and achieve catching the tiniest particles possible so that the air you breath is clean and pure. Disposable fiberglass filters are both popular and low-priced.  However, disposable filters lack the same level of efficiency as reusable furnace air filters.   One of the issues of these fiberglass disposable filters is that their surface if very limited.  The reason for this is often that if the filter was in a position to block each tiny particle within the air then the filter would rapidly become clogged and correct air flow would be negatively effected. To compensate, fiberglass filters catch only the biggest particles and allow the smaller mildew and bacteria particles to continue to circulate.

Then again, if you employ a pleated furnace filter, it is in a position to trap tiny irritants from the air due to the fact that its surface area is abundantly larger. This allows furnace filters to be more economical and to block smaller particles.

The way of rating the potency of furnace filters is named MERVs.  Increased MERV ratings point to better levels of filtration efficiency in a filter.  MERV measures the scale in microns of particles that are able to pass through the furnace filter.  A good home furnace filter ought to have a MERV rating ranging from 5 to 12.  Never get a filter whose MERV rate is lower than 4 since this type of filter will be inadequate for acceptable air filtration. However, over twelve is overkill for home use and suited solely to hospitals.

Good Air Filtration Systems Are The Start for Healthy Living

Filed under Appliances, Ventilation | No Comments

Have you ever considered how important air filtration is to your health? Clean air goes way beyond what you can see in the air. Particles many times smaller than a human hair float around in our homes and we breathe these in. Most of the larger particles get trapped in our nasal passages and throats, but a significant portion can make it all the way into our lungs. These particles can do damage to the lungs and cause allergic reasons that you are well aware of, such as COPD and asthma.

Clean air is actually easy to come by in the home and it starts with good filtration techniques. When I refer to good filtration, I mean at least a HEPA filter. HEPA is a designation for a type of filter efficiency. HEPA rated filters will remove particles down to a .3 micron size. These are much small than the width of a human hair and these small particles float around, unnoticed by the human eye.

Any good home air purifier will remove these particles. This is perhaps more important in the winter as the air is usually very dry and supports more particles flying around. In fact, if you want to reduce the load on your home air filter system, add humidity to the air during the dry winter months. Humid air will cause many particles to clump together and then be too large to float.

Good home air purifiers have become easy to find and there are many manufacturers that produce quality devices. The main thing you want to look for is a HEPA filter. Avoid the ones that actually think Ozone is good for you. Yes, certain manufacturers sell air purifiers that produce ozone, and since it smells good to most people, it makes them think it is “fresh” air. Ozone is not good for you to breathe.
Home air quality begins with good filtration.

Choosing A Smaller Bathroom Vanity Unit

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Bathroom vanities come in all shapes and sizes so you do not need to fret even if you have a small bathroom. The smaller vanity units are usually within the range of 12 to 30 inches wide and have sufficient space to have a sink on top. Depending on the size of the actual fixture, there may or may not be any counter space available. However, there will be a shelf or cupboard below the sink regardless of the size of the bathroom vanity units. In fact, the cupboard below could be used for storage purposes as well as concealing the ugly plumbing pipes.

Depending on the size of your family using the bathroom, the storage space might not be sufficient. In the case of a large family, you can consider getting the corner bathroom vanity unit to maximize the free space. On the other hand, for a smaller family, the vanity cabinets are huge enough to store your personal grooming items and toiletries.

If you think that the small bathroom vanities are only used in a small bathroom, then you are absolutely wrong. A smaller vanity unit that is placed in a large bathroom will give an impression that the room is extremely spacious. At the same time, it also portrays a neat and clutter free look. In fact, people nowadays prefer smaller items because of its design appeal as well. Anyway, at the end of the day, what matters is that the vanity unit could accommodate the storage space requirement in the family.

Next time when you are remodeling your bathroom, consider getting a smaller bathroom vanity for the sleek design if the additional storage space is not required. Let you bathroom look more spacious, neat yet portraying a unique and elegant appearance. Bear in mind that size is not everything because it still bores down to look and functionality.

Bathroom Light Fixtures To Compliment Your Home

Filed under Bathrooms, Lighting | No Comments

How many times have you been in the bathroom in a house other than yours and it either felt like a forgotten artifact or a design project gone wrong? It happens all of the time, and it’s usually because people don’t think to design their bathroom to fit the feel of the rest of the home. It might seem like a simple design rule, but many people figure that since it’s a different room it should have a different design. This is certainly not the case!

There’s no reason that entering a bathroom should feel like you’re walking out of one house and into another. Your home is the sum of all of it’s parts, and when those parts are similar it all fits together better! There are some things that fit only in a bathroom, like fluffy rugs, but those should at least be a similar color tone as the adjacent rooms. You don’t want everything to match perfectly, but there shouldn’t be a stark difference from one room to the next.

If you have modern lamps and chandeliers in your house, you should have modern bathroom light fixtures. If your home has a country theme, add some wood or homey accessories to the bathroom. If your home is minimalist, don’t clutter your bathroom up with a bunch of crap on the walls.

The best place to get started is with the bathroom lighting. Improving your bathroom lights is easy and can have a very dramatic impact on the home. Like I said above, don’t buy light fixtures that mimic the ones in the rest of your house, but buy ones that compliment them and would look good in the next room over.

Designing your bathroom is fun and a fairly easy project. Just be sure that you’re doing it in a way that you can live with for years to come, so you don’t have to do it again once you realize that it stands out like your home’s sore thumb!

Decorating A Cheap Bar Fridge

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

When it comes to bar fridges, there are fantastic looking ones, and then there are dull ones.  The difference is usually in the price tag.  Great looking mini bar fridges usually come with price tags of over $200, with some high units reaching into the thousands of dollars.  The higher priced models usually come with fancy features like glass doors or customizable doors that allow them to blend in completely with their surroundings.  For those of us who prefer not to spend a week or even a month’s wages on a small appliance, here are some ideas on how to get your cheap bar fridge either looking great or turning invisible.

By far the easiest way to get a cheap mini bar fridge looking great is to adorn it with some stickers.  I’m not talking about little kiddie stickers.  These days you can get some really great looking ones about anything you are interested in.  This might be your favorite type of beer (we are talking about things for the bar), a sports team, or even your favorite politician!  Since most people use their bars at night, if you get a sticker that glows in the dark, it will look great.  If you start with a black fridge, you won’t even really see it if it is dark and glowing.

As far as making the little appliance disappear completely, here are a couple of ideas.  First, you can stash it away in one of the cabinets, then open the door to access it.  This option only works if you get one small enough to fit inside the cupboard though!  Another idea is to use a piece of cloth to drape over it. If you put a nice colored piece of fabric right over a small bar fridge and then put a vase with flowers on top of that, people will just assume that it is a little table and not even notice it.  You can put it right up against one of your interior home columns in the basement and it will look like it supposed to be there.

Roof Cleaning The Right Way

Filed under Roofing | No Comments

Roofs, no matter what type of material they are made, can endure harsh weather conditions and can last a very long time when maintained well.  A good quality roof may even last for a lifetime when it is well taken care of.

So, it is very important to be able to take good care of your roof. This not only saves you money of having to replace it once in a while, you also save yourself from all the hassles – hiring a roofing contractor, finding the right materials for the roof, finding a temporary place to stay while the job is being done, and so many other things.

Thorough Roof Cleaning

The best way to protect the roof from damages is to maintain a clean roof. It is recommended to remove leaves and other debris from the roof. These things, when they are rotting or a bit humid, can possibly cause corrosion to your metal roofing materials.

When cleaning roofs thoroughly, it is also important to use the right roof cleaning products. Some of these  products may contain harmful chemicals that could do more harm than good.  It is advised to use organic cleaning products that are not only safe on your roof but also on the environment as well.

Protect Your Roof By Repainting

Repainting the roof does not only provide a good view for the eyes but it also helps keep it in good condition. Paint can help cover the roofs, especially the metal roofing ones, and thus prevent it from corroding.

When you are cleaning roof shingles, make sure that you check the condition of the paint. If there appears to be a bubble-like appearance on the shingles, this may be because it is starting to corrode. When this happens, scrape off the part that is causing corrosion and then repaint the spot.

Another important thing to look out for is mold.  Mold can do terrible damage to your roof, and if you do see some developing it might be advisable to call in a roof cleaning service, as they will be able to do a more through job.  Make sure to ask them if they deal with mold.

Roof cleaning is very important and can save you lots of money. When done the right way, your roofs should last a very long time and also look good, too.

Self Installation of Metal Roofing Materials

Filed under Appliances, Roofing | No Comments

When considering a new metal roof for your property self installation is an option for some homeowners. The project will need to be completed by someone with significant roofing or construction experience but can be undertaken using DIY roofing techniques. Metal roofing installation requires a high level of time and effort to be invested so you should be certain that you have the capabilities to make this kind of commitment and that you have a thorough understanding of how to install metal roofing. You may still wish to consult a professional roofing installation company to hear their opinion on whether you desired roof could be completed by someone with your experience.

You should complete a large amount of research into the roofing materials available as well as their individual costs before starting work. Comparisons of metal roofing materials and tool prices should be made in your local area. During this stage you can also compare the cost of doing everything yourself to using a reputable company. It may actually be worthwhile to leave the work to the professionals even if you have the necessary experience. If one company can complete the job and supply materials then this could make sound economic sense.

A roofing analysis of your proposed design will need to be completed by a roofing specialist to gain an accurate idea of metal roofing material costs if you want to take on the work yourself. You will need to produce a detailed drawing of the design and include as many details as possible. The company providing the analysis should be contacted prior to submitting the drawing so you are sure that all the relevant information has been provided.

The research process is important and should be carried out thoroughly before construction begins. You need to be certain that you are capable of finishing the work with your current skill set and that all quotations you have received for materials are accurate.

More detailed information about self installation of metal roofing materials can be found at this link.

Garden Pots for Indoor Herb Gardens

Filed under Garden | No Comments

There is a movement that has been around for several years, but which is gaining a lot of steam and becoming more popular lately-keeping a garden so that you are able to grow your own food (mainly herbs and vegetables).  However, many people don’t have the luxury of a large yard or garden, and many live in cities, apartments, where there is no yard at all.  Many of these people are still getting in on the fun by creating indoor herb gardens.  This is made possible through use of the right garden pots.

Garden plant pots come in many sizes, depending on the size of the plant; you need to make sure that the pot you choose is big enough for the root system of the plant to fully grow. The ideal gardening pots should be enough large to hold a lot of soil. If a pot is too small, the roots will not be able to get enough nutrients to feed the plant, and it will not grow well or even die.

The second consideration is drainage for the pots. They need to have good drainage capacities by some openings and holes on their bottom and on the sides.

Plants that stay in pots with no drainage will maintain the moisture for more time, but it is harder to keep the soil from becoming so packed that it doesn’t breathe.

The ideal garden flower pots should be definitely attractive. Of course, they are not art objects, but they still need to look nice. There are a lot of designer pots on the market that use special materials such as brass, ceramics, or polished metals that look great and match any décor.  You can also find molded gardening pots that are made to look like characters, objects, or other clever designs.

Choose Travertine Tile For Your Bathroom

Filed under Bathrooms, Flooring | No Comments

When you are in the design stages of redecorating your bathroom then you are going to find there are so many choices to be made that it can be hard to pick individual pieces that will come together to create a beautiful finished product. I find it helps to do each part of your shopping individually and build on what you have already chosen to hopefully find everything works well together. How many times have you visited someones home to find that every item looks are if it was picked with no thought to how well it would fit in? This is definitely someone you want to avoid if you want to get the best value with your efforts.

I always like to start with what I am going to put on the floor and the walls when I am redecorating as this is one of the places I spend the most money, and if you get this part right everything else is going to pick itself. For a bathroom this is going to mean getting tiles for both floor and walls so already your job is becoming a little easier.

I have a particular affinity with travertine tile which many people haven’t heard of but which add a real touch of class to your home at an affordable price. An when I say affordable I mean compared to buying something like marble instead, which may require you to re-mortgage your home. Travertine tiles will still take up a sizable portion of your budget but the ambiance it adds to the bathroom will mean it is worth every penny.

Travertine wall tiles have a beautiful pitted nature and, being 100% naturally formed, every piece if individual, allowing you to create a truly unique room. And with the idea of what floor and wall tiles you are using you will find it so much easier to go on to the other areas which need your attention such as the shower enclosure and the style of taps you need to get the look you want.

Walk In Shower Secrets: Why Walk In Showers Make Sense

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Walk in showers have become the ultimate luxury in new homes and for existing bathroom upgrades. Because today’s house purchasers are looking at both style and function when it comes to the design of the entire house, which according to design experts is now including the bathroom, many homes are being sold or not being sold by this one room.

Due to this change in the way people are thinking about bathrooms, manufacturers of bathroom fixtures, and of showers in particular, are stepping up their game.

Gone are the days of the same old bath/shower combo; these are being rapidly replaced by a variety of choices of walk in shower enclosures. Showers are taking a position in the vanguard of overall bathroom design, with options for semi-framed, framed, and frameless all being offered.

Today much of the design effort is being placed on creating a more open space in the bathroom. Homeowners seem to be favoring clear, glass showers which serve as the main attraction in their bathroom design; particularly for bathrooms without windows, these brand new showers can reflect light to offer a more spacious and refreshing feel to the space. By incorporating a glass type walk in shower enclosure other bathroom fittings can easily be built into the remaining bathroom decoration.

The well engineered showers offer a sleek ultra up to date solution matched to complete the look of any bathroom style while allowing for artwork, bathroom accessories, bathroom flooring and tiles to be configured with the shower unit.

As people are taking more time in their showers for various reasons, be it an electric shower or steam shower cabin, the industry professionals are attributing the sharp increase in shower sales to the bigger flexibility in shower options that are currently available to the purchaser. The desire to segregate the bath from the shower points to consumer demands for transformation and for greater diversity in product range.

These brand new walk in showers can go for years without major maintenance, they can be built-in to replace just about any existing bath/shower combination, and are very attractive to look at due to their sleek and up to date design.

The chrome frame of a lot of of these built in showers makes it easier than ever to find other bathroom fittings and furnishings to match with very little effort or know-how on the part of the consumer. Creating a bathroom that is both practical and pleasing to the eye is extremely easy with these chrome styles and designs that will fit any bathroom style and color scheme.

Bedding Ensembles For More Beautiful Bedrooms

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

We would all love a perfect bedroom, one which we look at and feel immediately relaxed and away from the cares of the world. Unfortunately our far from perfect bedroom is sometimes part of those cares. It is just that everyday life sometimes gets in the way of interior design and we don’t find time to redecorate or we find our bedroom has become a dumping ground for all sorts of junk we could not find anywhere else to put.

Sometimes we just have to take the bull by the horns and decide to do something about our room and a great place to start is with a bedding ensemble. By that I mean if you can find a bedding ensemble to fall in love with it is the perfect spring board to a wonderful room because one thing leads to another. Suddenly we feel it is worthwhile to tidy up and get rid of the clutter and actually put the pile of laundered clothes away instead of leaving them on the bedroom chair.

You see a bedding ensemble gives us an easy means of having an attractive bed which means we feel like making it every morning and don’t want to spoil it with whatever else is going on in the room. Before long we are not just tidying our bedroom but also getting out paint charts and holding carpet and curtain colors against the duvet cover, comforter or pillow sham to see if they will go together. And once we have a color scheme and know what we would like for our bedrooms that is half the battle. With new bedding to motivate us, we will finally order the items that we need to transform our room and engage whatever professionals we need to carry out the work we can not do or do not have time for ourselves.

How do I know this? It happened to me!

Media Storage Furniture: Essential To Any Entertainment Center

Filed under Storage | No Comments

Some people feel the need to own several media storage units at a time because they have so many DVDs and Blu Ray movies. In all actuality you only need one piece of storage furniture given you buy large enough. You can get them which hold as many as nine hundred DVDs at a time and this is usually more expensive then what you will pay for one that will only hold about a hundred. However if you are like me your collection keeps getting bigger and there is no end in sight.

Sometimes you can find people who are selling their media storage furniture for very cheap prices. You should check in your local news paper and maybe be able to find one there. There are also sites where people will post things they are selling and sometimes you can even find DVD storage units on those sites.

Sometimes DVD storage units can be very costly and I do not think they are worth the price that a lot of companies charge because they are very cheaply made. Some companies will sell storage units for good prices and even off site to store shipping.

This means that you pay for the item online and they ship it directly to a local store and you pick it up there. There are even companies that sell furniture sets so that you can get matching ones for your furniture. You can get them in sets of entertainment centers, coffee tables, end tables and even the DVD storage unit.

These sets are obviously more costly than just a CD or DVD storage cabinet but this means you would have a matching set. It is pretty easy to find matching media storage cabinets if you have a living room suit that is a typical color. I found different furniture at different places and they all match.

Saving Energy At Home: Home Energy Saving Tips For You and Your Family

Filed under Budgeting | No Comments

As the temperature drops, energy consumption rises, as does your monthly home energy bill. It is the time of year when families begin to think about the rising costs of gas and electricity, required to heat the home during the cold months. Below are some simple ideas for how you and your family can work together towards saving energy at home.

Saving gas and saving electricity are two considerations that are foremost on people’s minds during the winter season, when heating the home becomes a costly endeavor. Thinking ahead and taking a few simple actions around the home will help to keep you warm without breaking your bank account.

One of the easiest ways to lose heat is through thin windows and poorly insulated floors and walls. Whether you heat your home with gas or electricity, your thermostat will have to work a lot harder at maintaining a set temperature if the heat does not stay within the home’s walls. During the warm seasons, consider replacing your old single pane windows with newer, insulating ones, to help keep the produced heat in, and to use the heat generated by the sun during the day to reduce the amount of heat generated by your gas or electric heater. You may also choose to evaluate the efficacy of your home’s insulation, and consider updating or replacing it. This can be a costly process, but inquire whether your government will help to subsidize the project, in an effort to reduce collective energy consumption.

If a window renovation is not presently possible for your budget, consider a simpler, more temporary solution Use plastic to seal your window areas and to create a barrier that will keep the heat in and the cold drafts out.

Saving water is an equally important consideration that will help to keep your utility bills down. Inquire with your water supplier about ways to reduce your water bill. Look into water saving toilets and shower heads, and consider only using the dishwater once it has been completely filled.

With these simple energy saving tips, you and your family can rest assured that you are taking steps to becoming a more environmentally conscious family, while reducing your monthly energy costs.

Getting Started With Coffee Pods

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

If you are a coffee lover with limited time on your hands, the coffee pod is a great option that allows you to get your fix without wasting valuable minutes in the morning. Coffee pods accomplish the seemingly impossible- providing rich, high-quality brews at the press of a button- in a convenient system that literally anyone can learn to use.

Coffee pods are a relatively new innovation, so many people may not be familiar with the term. A coffee pod is a pre-packaged amount of ground coffee beans contained within its own filter. The pod coffee system differs substantially from traditional brewing, and so the switch to pods may require you to purchase a coffee pod machine to replace your old coffee maker. Here we will provide you with the basic knowledge you need to start using coffee pods, including recommendations on pod coffee makers and brands.

The Senseo system, produced by Douwe Egberts and Philips and first introduced in the Netherlands, was the first popular pod coffee brewing device. After spreading across Europe, the machine arrived in the U.S. The Senseo is renowned for its sleek design and ease of use, making it one of the most prominent pod coffee makers available today.

The Senseo may be used with a variety of other brands whose pods are compatible with the maker. After a patent dispute in Belgium, other European brands were allowed to create their own lines of coffee pods for the Senseo system. While this was bad news for the Senseo parent companies, it has resulted in a wide array of choices for coffee loving consumers.

Senseo coffee pods include mild, dark, and decaffeinated roasts, as well as even more options that vary by country. Also available are flavors such as chocolate and espresso blended with traditional brews. From Wolfgang Puck and other gourmet brews to ubiquitous lines like Folgers and Javastone, the competition for coffee pods has increased dramatically.

Coffee lovers with more unusual tastes can also use coffee pods, as pod coffee makers are not limited to brewing standard morning roasts. In 2008, Senseo introduced another model, the Latte Select, which effortlessly creates café lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos.

While a large part of the increasing demands for coffee pods is linked to their ease of use, the consistency of their results has also enticed coffee and espresso lovers to switch over. Each pod has a standardized amount of beans, such as the 7 grams found in espresso coffee pods, which removes the guesswork from the brewing process. This standardization will delight some coffee drinkers and frustrate others, as varying tastes may leave fans of weaker or stronger-than-average brews wishing for more control over their brew.

Coffee pod machines can be purchased from stores such as Target or home specialty chains, as well as from a variety of online sources.  Thanks to the simplicity of home cafe coffee pods, it is now easier than ever to experiment with new flavors and blends.

Freestanding Cookers: Which One Is Right For You?

Filed under Appliances, Kitchens | No Comments

There are many varieties of  free standing cookers to pick from and it’s important to select the right one. Many of us have ordered some products online and only to find that when it finally arrived it wasn’t what you expected. So follow these steps on how to decide on a good cooker for your home.

The initial step you ought to take is determine where you’d like to put it. Then you should measure the area on all sides, taking into account any overextending counter lips or floor moldings that will affect the final measurements. The reason we do this is as a result of some folks have made mistakes before by simply shopping for freestanding cookers and taking it home without measuring first. If it doesn’t fit, you will have a nice small renovation job on your hands, something we obviously want to avoid. Most European cookers are around 50 to sixty centimeters wide and sometimes 60 centimeters deep, and American ones tend to be 75 centimeters or wider, so make sure to measure both the cooker that you have in mind, and the space that you have to put it in.

Next step is to determine which fuel will work better for you, gas or electric. This is very much based on personal preference.  A free standing gas cooker is usually a lot more quicker to get hot, but with less of an ability to manage the area that heats up. The other alternative is an electric cooker.  Free standing electrical cookers will give you much more control over the heat so that the flame spreads around the pot evenly. The last choice you can opt for from is a duel fuel cooker which gives you the best of both worlds.

Flannel Sheets: Some Common Misconceptions

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

When you are living in a location whereby it is often hit with cold weather, getting a set of flannel bedding becomes a necessity. It could keep you warm and cozy from the harsh weather and this is why flannel sheets have become well-liked by a huge group of people. However, there are several misconceptions that people have regarding these cozy sheets and it will be clarified within this article.

Misconception 1: They don’t retain warmth

This is not true because there are different levels of quality and thickness on the market. The lower quality ones are those that are lighter and it often doesn’t provide you with much warmth. In fact, if you purchase any low quality bedding, you will be getting the same result. Therefore, the fault doesn’t lie in the sheets but in the quality that you choose to buy. Try getting a thicker and heavier flannel sheet if you are someone who is overly sensitive to cold.

Misconception 2: They pilling easily

Pilling occurs when the sheets are washed frequently which result in small flurry ball appearing on the surface of the sheets. In the past, I would have agreed with this statement but now the problem has been rectified. Manufacturers have factored in this issue and now most sets are pill resistant.

Misconception 3: It is difficult to judge the quality

Once again, this is not true. While you may be used to one method of judging the quality of sheets flannel simply needs to be judged differently.  But it is not at all difficult. Typical bedding uses thread count as an evaluation for the quality but flannel bedding uses weight as the factor to differentiate its quality. A normal flannel fitted sheet should be around 4 ounces per yard while a quality one should be at least 6 ounces. Therefore, you need to be careful if the sheets are below 4 ounces because the quality is much lower.

Now that you have a better understanding of this cozy bedding option, start preparing a few flannel sheet sets for your family. Remember to check for the quality of it before purchasing to enjoy a good night sleep during winter.  They are available in every size you could imagine, from California King to a tiny flannel crib sheet for your baby.  This winter, the whole family can be warm!

Beautiful Wide Plank Flooring: Tips For Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

Although refinishing hardwood floors can be a bit time-consuming if you do the job yourself, it can really save you a lot of money, and the results can be beautiful. Even if your floors are in bad shape, such as if your wide plank wood flooring has become worn and damaged, the efforts you spend on your hardwood floors refinishing project will pay off big with a shiny new look for your previously worn-looking flooring.

The first step to hardwood floors refinishing is to first remove all of the furniture from the room, and then remove any carpeting or throw rugs. In order to prevent injury or possible damage to the equipment, inspect the flooring carefully for any loose nails, and make sure to use a countersink to pound them below the surface of the wood flooring.

Depending on your level of skills, you will need to determine whether to use a drum sander or an orbital sander designed for hardwood floor refinishing. Although a drum sander works fast, it sometimes can be difficult and heavy to handle, and could cause you to sand more wood off the floor than you actually intended. If you are renting a sander from a rental shop, see if you can get a demonstration of both first, so that you can better decide what might be best for you. You will also need an edge sander for getting close to the edges of the room.

When using a floor sander, always make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Basic tips for using a sander involve always keeping the sander moving, to avoid over-sanding the floor, and following the grain of the wood. This means if you have flooring such as wide plank wood flooring, you will want to follow the pattern of the boards until you have the entire floor sanded. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper, then sand the floor again with a medium grit. Use the edge sander, fill in any cracks or dents with wood putty, let dry, and then sand once last time with fine grit sandpaper. Make sure to vacuum thoroughly to remove all dust.

Once the floor has been carefully sanded and cleaned, you can re-stain the wood floor, using a rag to apply it with the grain, and a second rag to remove the excess stain, changing to a new rag when it becomes too wet. After allowing the stain to dry overnight, or according to the manufacturer’s directions, you can apply the final wood finish, usually in several coats, allowing it to dry thoroughly between coats.

Finding Cheap Laminate Flooring

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

Contrary to what many people believe, hardwood floors and cheap laminate wood flooring are not the same material. Laminate floors are the artificial materials used to look like hardwoods that are more stain resistant, scratch resistant, and impact resistant and protected against fading by sunlight.

Cheap laminate wood flooring comes in three types. The first requires the installer to use special glue in the tongue and grooves of each plank. Glueless floating laminate floors use snap-fit technology to come together. Most cheap laminate wood flooring is this kind of flooring. There is also the kind of laminate floor that is pre-glued in the factory and allows the installer to moisten the planks and fit them into the grooves of a matching plank.

The floating installation method used for cheap laminate wood flooring simply refers to the fact that most of these floor systems are installed right on top of a subfloor that can be made of plywood, concrete flooring, vinyl slabs, or some other material. You will never have to glue these floors down.

After they are installed, these do-it-yourself systems do not need polishing or waxing. They are pretreated with different kinds of finishes. There are two drawbacks to cheap laminate wood flooring that homeowners should be aware of: they do not perform very well in excessive moisture and because they are noisy when walked on, they usually require underlayment padding to snuff down the sound.

Cheap hardwood flooring is natural and non-allergenic. There are basically two types: solid wood floors and engineered wood floors. Solid wood systems are installed by nailing down the floor to a wood subfloor.

Glueless engineered cheap hardwood flooring requires installation techniques similar to that of laminate flooring. Installation requires gluing, stapling, floating or nailing down the floor for all systems. Engineered floors are much less responsive to humidity than solid wood floors. Hardwood floors can be unfinished or prefinished (also called factory finished).

If you are looking for the perfect visual appeal, almost any of these systems can be designed to fit your needs. Cheap laminate wood flooring is excellent at resisting most of the things that it will have to endure. It, however, does not look as good as prefinished engineered hardwood floors.

The life expectancy for both tops the 20-year mark, with engineered hardwood lasting for 25 years. What is the best feature for both the hardwood and the cheap laminate wood flooring systems is that if you want to spend most of your money on materials and not pay as much for labor, they each are do-it-yourself and quite easy to install.

A Great Hardwood Floor Vacuum Review

Filed under Appliances, Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

Finding a great hardwood floor vacuum can be a tough thing. I know how it goes sometimes. You go to the store only to find a number of vacuums that somewhat fit your needs, but not completely. This can be extremely frustrating for someone who’s leading a busy life with a family. You can’t take large amounts of time out of your schedule to go shopping around from store to store. You need to know which vacuum is going to clean your floor the best, and you need to know where you can get it. No worries! We’ll help.

I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about the Eureka Boss SmartVac line of hardwood floor vacuums. Based on a very popular online survey site, this vacuum came out at the top spot in a comparison done between almost 40 different types of vacuums. These were compared by seeing how much dirt and debris was picked up on a hardwood floor surface. Beating out that much competition is a pretty hefty honor; you’d be doing yourself a favor by checking this vacuum out.

What are some of the pros and cons of this Eureka Boss vacuum? Well, one of the big pros is the fact that it’s absolutely wonderful at picking up dust and pet dander. Considering those are two of the things many people are allergic to, getting rid of these is paramount. Hardwood floors don’t attract as much as a carpet would, but you’d be surprised at how much of that sticks around on hardwood. But, with a pro there’s almost always a con. But, this may not be a show stopper for you: This vacuum is extraordinarily heavy. It weighs just over 20 pounds, which may make it difficult to haul up and down flights of stairs. It’ll move with a bit of muscle, but for smaller people this may prove a challenge.

Even with the weight issue, I still think this is one of the best hardwood floor vacuum cleaners on the market.

Alarm Monitoring Companies: Picking The Right One

Filed under Safety | No Comments

You’ve decided that a home alarm system is right for you and your family. Now the question is how do you pick from the alarm monitoring companies to find the one that is right for you? A good first step is to visit the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) website and see what companies service your area. It is worth noting that the NBFAA membership is a sign of quality, but not a full endorsement of an alarm company. Also ask neighbors and your homeowner’s insurance agent who they recommend.

You can narrow down your list by visiting company websites and calling companies for references. Ideally you will end up with 3-4 alarm monitoring services to solicit bids from. Once you have your choices, make appointments for one of their representatives to come to your home and do an evaluation and recommendation of the type of alarm system they feel you need. It is worth noting that you should do some reading either online about the types of systems available and their pros and cons. Remember, the salesperson wants your business and may gloss over details that are important to you. Be sure to get details such insuring that the company has 24 hr 7 day a week security alarm monitoring and customer service staff. This is also the time to discuss if you want to add features like fire, carbon monoxide or water leak monitoring to be included.

After the home inspection and discussion with the representative from each alarm monitoring company, ask for a written bid that includes the costs of the equipment, installation, and at least a year’s monitoring fees. Based on the written bids, references and your gut feelings you should be able to pick between the alarm monitoring companies to find the one that is right for you. Visit alarm monitoring companies and best home alarm systems for more information.

Tub Chair Time: The Lowdown On Leather Tub Chairs

Filed under Furniture | No Comments

Tub chairs are becoming a very popular choice for many home owners because of their unique design features. The low slung back rest and high side arms make them very comfortable to sit on. You will find them in many hotel reception areas, in libraries and coffee shops across the world. They offer a very relaxed seating position that enables you to see things going around you. Tub chairs have been around for over 200 years, and have remained in the spotlight for most of this time.

Leather tub chairs are regarded as the most expensive to buy and some of the best designs are sold for prices in excess of $5000. These are top quality chairs made from the highest grade leather that retains the natural oils and patterns found in the hide. High grade leather is also very supple, which means it does not split or crack after prolonged use. Cheaper versions such as a faux leather tub chair do not have these characteristics, the surface is processes to a shine, and there are no natural imperfections that add character to the tub chair. The processing of the faux leather takes all the good stuff out, and you are left with something that looks similar to the real deal, but is far removed from it.

The reason why people go for imitation leather is the price. It is much cheaper to buy than a real leather chair. The one big difference you will notice is the smell. Cheap leather does not have that strong odor that we all recognize and love. It is also not as soft to the touch, and feels much harder and colder. The removal of the natural oils is the main reason for this. Durability will be a factor with a cheap chair. The best leather will last for years to come without showing any signs of degradation or splitting. In fact it will look better as it ages, which is what you pay the extra money for.

While leather is obviously the best choice, it is clearly not your only option.  You may choose from it’s inexpensive look-alike, or go a different route altogether and opt for fabric tub chairs instead.  Each material has its pros and cons, but the bottom line is that whichever you choose, you will be taking your decor up a notch with this timeless piece of furniture.
