Will LED Kitchen Lighting Work?

Filed under Kitchens, Lighting | No Comments

Pretty much everyone who hasn’t been living in a cave lately is aware that traditional incandescent light bulbs are being phased out (this was news to you? go to your local store and try buying a regular 100w light bulb, oh and try to get out the cave a bit more). This is also starting to affect halogen spot lamps of the sort so popular in kitchens.

So what are the alternatives then? Well there are CFL lamps which replace regular light bulb shaped lamps, but these are way too bulky for spot light fittings and anyway they are limited to normal bayonet and screw type bases, whereas almost all halogen spots use GU10 (mains twist and lock) or GU5.3 (low voltage push fit bi-pin) bases.

But there are increasingly a range of LED lamps that look exactly the same as halogen lamps and thus fit into existing recesses and fittings. So how well does say a GU10 LED perform as a replacement for a normal halogen spot light?

Taking my own kitchen as an example, the ceiling has 10 recessed spots evenly spaced in 2 rows of 5 (it’s long and fairly narrow). Using halogens I found that 35 watts per lamp was considerably more than bright enough; in fact I installed a dimmer switch to bring the light level down to something a little more comfortable.

So that gives a maximum brightness of 350 watts all told, but realistically about 250 watts is what I would aim for to attain the amount of brightness I prefer. As an aside, I don’t rely on overhead kitchen lighting but, like many people, have additional lighting under cabinets, inside display cupboards and for specific task areas.

So we need to look at using 10 LED lamps that each has luminosity roughly equivalent to a 25W conventional light bulb. Using the rough and ready calculation that LEDs consume about 10 times less power than incandescent equivalents this means we need GU10 LEDs rated at about 3W.

LED spots of this power are now starting to become quite common in DIY and general stores, but for preference I still recommend finding reputable specialist suppliers (there are many online) in order to be sure of quality and also to specify characteristics such as color temperature and beam angle. Key to getting a good match with existing halogen lighting is using a similar angle (or preferably slightly wider) and picking a warm rather than cool white.

So in summary, yes, the latest LEDs are well suited to kitchen lighting and quite soon you may have little choice in the matter anyway!

Keeping Your Home Organized with Plastic Organizers

Filed under Organization | No Comments

For anyone hoping to get their home on an organized schedule, it can be tough. Keeping your home maintained and orderly takes work and effort, but it feels good to have everything in its place. Plastic organizers help you keep things organized and easily accessible. Here are some ideas for getting your house in order.

An important first step is to get rid of anything that you don’t need. Do you have paper clutter that needs to be thrown away? Do you have clothing, books, toys, and other items that you just don’t need anymore? A big part of keeping your home clean is minimizing your stuff.

Once you’ve rid yourself of the junk you don’t need, you’re ready to get busy and organize the rest of the stuff. To start, you will want to sort through things and prepare to store like items together. Office items will go together, pens, paper, and so on.

When everything is sorted, you will then want to decide how to store it. You may need different sizes of plastic organizers to keep your items stored neatly. Keeping your things in storage bins can help keep you organized and also keeps your stuff things protected from bugs, dirt, and other elements.

Label your plastic bins so that you will be able to easily locate any item you need. It won’t do you any good to store your stuff away if you’re going to have to search through each of your plastic bins in order to find something. So label everything so you can find it later!

You will find that once you have organized your items into plastic containers, you’ll be able to keep your home maintained and clean much more easily. You will still have work to do, but you’ll find that it’s much easier with a little basic organization.

Adding Acoustic Insulation in Your Home

Filed under Renovations | No Comments

For many peace and quiet is not something can find even at home. There are many products which you can use to create a quieter room environment.  Acoustic materials such as batt rolls, spray foam, and foam tiles which are specially made to create acoustic insulation in homes and businesses are probably the easiest to install and fairly inexpensive to buy.  These materials are generally placed in the ceiling, under the floors, and within the walls of a room to reduce the amount of external noise that can be heard from elsewhere. Acoustic products are popular in areas where sound quality is needed such as music studios and theaters. Some colleges and other institutions where music is taught, use these types of tiles in the design of music rooms so the sound of music is truer and lacking noise pollutants. The acoustic sound insulation materials on the market today are designed to work in all kinds of environments where noise can pose a problem.

Some people are beginning to incorporate them into spa areas or meditation rooms. By reducing the amount of external noise you will be able to relax and let go of the tension you are carrying from a busy and stressful day at work. There can be a number of outside sounds which can actually be disturbing to a person’s mental well being. The use of sound proof insulation is also being used in the workplace to reduce the amount of sound that carries from space to space. Many cubicles are designed with the special insulation material to reduce the outside chatter and hum of the office. They are also being used for home offices where outdoor noises can be distracting to a person’s work and production.

Most of the tiles and panels you will find for sound proofing your home can be purchased at any home improvement store. You may find some of these available as kits which will include everything you need for self-installation of the product. If you purchase the items separately you need to know the square footage of the area you want to use them in. The soundproof acoustic insulation used as ceiling tile will also need a brace structure in which to place the tiles. Once installed, you will be amazed at the difference the noise reduction will make for your home.

Your Options In Aluminum Patio Covers

Filed under Garden | No Comments

Since you are looking for either a new patio cover structure or you’re renovating an old patio space, there are some newer innovations to take into consideration.  But, before we get into these newer patio covers and the materials that make them up, we need to cover some ideas regarding patio cover designs first.  The reason behind this is because of the fact that some styles and patio designs are just not suited for particular types of shade structures.

For example, some exterior home and patio designs are much more suited to have an attached pergola type of feature, rather than a free-standing model.  Similarly, the type of roof that you might be thinking about might not work given your home’s layout or the general direction the sun will be facing in the hot, later summer afternoons.  These are just a couple of the things that make choosing your patio shade structure so important.

Another thing that needs to be considered is the type of material you’ll be using.  This is where the discussion on innovation comes into play.  You see, there was a time when patio covers, like the classic pergola, was made entirely of wood.  Woods like cedar and redwood still make great choices for outdoor patios and other furniture items because they weather the elements so gracefully.  However, you still need to take care to protect, preserve and maintain them in order to get long-lasting use out of them.

With metal, you have other choices.  One option is to go with aluminum patio covers for their ease of workability and lightweight material.  They do no rust and can be painted in a variety of colors to match your home or landscape décor.  However, some people are just not satisfied with this as an option.  So, along comes Alumawood™.  This company makes a variety of styles of outdoor shade structures; attached, free standing, solid roof, lattice roof, etc.  Basically, with Alumawood™ patio covers, you get all the benefits of the type of patio structure you want, with little maintenance to speak of.  Moreover, there is an embossed cedar wood grain design on the pieces and they come in a variety of color choices that mimic wood stain options.  If you’re considering a new or renovated patio, look into these aluminum patio covers.

Ideas for a Painted Vanity

Filed under Furniture | No Comments

A painted vanity is a way to totally makeover your space just by focusing in on one piece. Even if you bought a new fixture a few years ago it can seem quite dated now especially if you went with a wood such as oak. You can really just spruce things up with a small amount of time and give it a high end feeling just for the cost of paint, which is relatively cheap. Plus you can make it work with any color palette, even turquoise accessories.

There are a lot of different design directions that you can take this in. For instance you could try distressing your finish. You’ll really want to use a steady hand and a subtle glaze effect just so that it doesn’t look messy. Instead it should seem like an antique piece of furniture. This also allows you to use a brighter color like a green underneath and give it more of a subtle and natural feeling. This adds interest to your piece and will also highlight any carving or details that you have in your room. Before you just throw something out look very carefully at the lines to see if it is salvageable with just a little bit of paint.

You can make your old vanity seem quite updated and fresh. It might even be something that you like a lot more than what is available at the store. If your piece has a lot of curves on it then you could go for a French feel. You could use a cream paint. It just really depends on what kind of tile you are trying to match as well as the vanity top.

Before you pick a paint color really decide what you don’t like about your space. This could be a vintage blue bathroom tile that you just never have been thrilled about. Instead of just trying to match the blue you should try to neutralize it by using a taupe or a white paint. This will really help the room to feel updated, even when you are working with retro pieces.

A Chaise Cushion for Outdoor Furniture Décor

Filed under Garden, Seating | No Comments

Many people who have their own home also like to decorate their backyard area to be a relaxing place to spend time in. This is done by having a deck or patio area where you can place different types of furniture to accommodate spending time outdoors. One of the most common pieces of furniture used in outdoor areas is the lounge. This item can be one of the inexpensive collapsible styles or the higher quality wooden styles. The designer wooden pieces generally use a chaise cushion on the item to help make it more comfortable for relaxing in.

You can also use these cushions for some of the new modern styles created from metal or molded plastic. The various cushions used for outdoor furniture are available in lots of different colors and designs. This allows you to decorate the area in the type of color scheme you want to have. If you would like a tropical island feel for your deck, you might choose some cushions with large colorful flower patterns on them. If you purchase an outdoor furniture group as a set, you will generally receive the cushions along with the frames and can even have a matching umbrella for the group.

You might choose to purchase some furniture pieces as unfinished wood items that you can paint yourself. This gives you total control over how your outdoor décor will be styled. You may decide to create a complete landscaped area by adding some fence and several potting urns. You will find many products available at major department stores or home improvement retailers that can help give you ideas on what to use in your yard. A well landscaped and designed yard area will be an enjoyable place for family and friends to gather and spend some outdoor leisure quality time together.

Stunning Skylight & Window Construction

Filed under Renovations | No Comments

If you are looking for a great remodeling and design idea that will not only increase the value of your home but will also make it more energy efficient then look no further. In addition to enhancing your home’s architectural magnificence, skylights and ceiling windows, along with a plethora of other “high window” designs, are a primary part of the framework of a stunning home.

I have literally walked into Phoenix homes that had such a lack of lighting that they were a little daunting, especially considering that the homeowners did not like to keep on artificial lighting during the day so that they could keep their energy bills down. Does this sound a little like your home?

With so much sunlight here during the summer, I wonder, why sit in the dark? Home builders in the Phoenix construction industry know how to handle window installation–one trick is to build them on the North and South walls of the home. These sides of the home receive less direct sunlight and therefore keep the home cooler.

If you are considering some remodeling ideas or if you are building a new home, think about installing skylights and ceiling windows in these areas:

In closets and garages. Installing small circular skylights in these areas greatly increases light flow and minimizes the use of artificial light. They are typically very dark areas. Skylights will not only brighten them up with a little sunshine, but will add to the design of each of these spaces.

By the banister. If you have a stairwell with cool metal banisters, a grand staircase, or some other exquisite design you want to show off, then skylights can shed light on this often low lit area of your home. If your stairwell is on an angle, introducing skylights can make for an even more interesting and architecturally daring design. Skylights come in different shapes as well, so you could place triangular skylights with your rectangular windows for a dynamic look.

Above and beyond. The angular dimensions of vaulted ceilings are made to look even more intricate and sophisticated with modern skylights, ribbon windows, and other ceiling window designs. Ribbon windows are a popular choice for kitchens. Ribbon windows are a string, or “ribbon” of windows in a row, set close to the ceiling. They let light shine right into your kitchen accentuating your beautifully textured cabinets or ceiling design.

If you want your home to be one of a kind, home builders in every city, including top rated Phoenix contractors, can design unique, custom lighting elements that take advantage of a home’s structural design.

Window Valances 101: Summer Valance Styles

Filed under Windows | No Comments

You might think it is a little extravagant to change your window treatments in the summer, but if your living room or bedroom has very heavy drapes then it will spoil the whole feeling of the room when the weather gets warmer. If you are able to use a few items to switch the mood of your room, why not do so? And it can be as easy as rolling up a fluffy rug, swapping a mohair throw for a cotton one and changing velvet valances and curtains for light cotton.

As for summer window treatments, the best valance styles are simple scarf valances, which use a long length of very thin or sheer fabric looped over a drapery rod. This is as light as you can go with valances.

Much depends on the hardware that you already have at your windows, however, as it is not a quick change if you need to add new curtain and drapery rods with the change of the seasons. A light scarf type valance only works if you have a rod, rail or pole for your valance which is attractive enough to be on display. If you have a white plastic or metal rail or drapery rod, then you need another plan.

An alternative is to make or purchase light summer curtains and matching valances. As summer curtains don’t need lining you can get reasonable quality cotton curtains fairly cheaply. Choose a light color to reflect the season and if they are patterned a small flower sprig or pattern of green leaves on a white, cream or pale yellow background would work well depending on the color scheme in your room.

If budget is an issue, cheap plain cream curtains and valances made from calico will still be better than heavy velvet drapes in the summer. If even they are too much plain cream roller blinds with a decorative valance covering the existing rail will work well too.

Boardroom Chairs and More: Selecting the Best Office Furniture

Filed under Furniture | No Comments

Establishing a formal office for work or home requires much consideration. There are many factors that should be considered in order to build the office space that is most compatible for a specific environment. One of the most important elements of any office space is the furniture. There are so many different styles of furniture to suit the personal style of those utilizing a space for working. It is very important for individuals to consider the type, size and style of their furniture for their working space to ensure that the items purchased are comfortable yet functional. A large boardroom chair would look out of place in a small home office.

Functionality is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing office furniture. It doesn’t matter if the work space is established in a professional setting or a home, the furniture should offer the user the ability to perform work comfortably. The furniture should also have features that make it useful in a number of ways. Such features as drawers, pull out keyboards, locks and built in holders for a CPU are very important. Individuals should select pieces of furniture that provide enough space to perform work and adequate storage for other incidentals such as paper, books and office supplies. These features prevent the need to purchase additional storage products. Spending the extra money for furniture that allows for an effective work space is recommended.

Size of the office furniture is another factor that needs to be considered when selecting pieces for a work environment. All work environments will have space limitations. There are some people that want large desks to work on, but the space in the immediate environment won’t allow for this. People should measure the entire area of their work space prior to purchasing any furniture. This will allow individuals to select pieces that will fit into the designated work space. Individuals that need storage options but are confined by limited space should put much effort in to purchasing furniture that serves many functions such as a desk with an overhead hutch that can provide compact workspace with storage all in one.

Saving Your Space With A Garage Organizer

Filed under Garages | No Comments

All too often you hear the horror stories of people and their cluttered, messy and unorganized garages, being unable to park their vehicle into it, or can’t find anything they need amidst all the items.  This is where a garage organizer comes into play.

Waiting for your garage to become a chaotic mess shouldn’t be the time to invest in a garage organizer, once you have one you should have no problem keeping things in check for all your items. Organizers come in all shapes and sizes, colors and types, finding one is a matter of preference and budget. If you store a lot of items such as yard equipment, wooden projects or boxes you just haven’t gone through yet, an organizer will greatly aid in your ability to get to these items easily.

A standard garage organization system will contain an array of cabinets, drawers, perhaps a work surface and wall mounts for storing tools and equipment. Wall mounts are great for storing heavier more awkward items such as bicycles, golf equipment, hockey sticks or even water sport equipment.

Having an organized garage won’t only bring back your garage from the depths of disorganization, you’ll be very proud to leave your garage door open for anyone to see. Much like the inside of your home, a garage says a lot about a person, why should you treat it any differently from the rest of your house?

Whether you spend 5 minutes a day in your garage simply getting into your car and going to work, or a hour working on a project, there is no hurt in entering an organized garage that is functional, and more importantly safe. Many accidents happen in a garage due to neglect, don’t become apart of that statistic and be worry free with an organized garage.

Will An Epoxy Garage Floor Coating Work?

Filed under Flooring, Garages | No Comments

There are many options available for treating a garage floor to seal and protect it.  Although an acrylic garage floor coating will give a nice shine for a short length of time it is really not tough enough for vehicular traffic.  Acrylic floor coatings are designed for covering many types of flooring including vinyl, fired tiles, and concrete but they are designed to protect against light to medium foot traffic.

In order to get full protection for your garage floor, and also apply an added anti-slip material, your best bet would be to apply a two part epoxy coating.  Epoxy is a very tough and durable product which is composed of a resin and hardener.  For a comparison on how hard an epoxy floor coating is just think of fiberglass like pleasure boats are constructed of.  This is an epoxy resin and hardener which is applied over a woven mesh for structural support.  The actual toughness of the shell is formed by the chemical bond between the epoxy which is activated when the hardener is mixed in.

An epoxy garage floor coating is easy to apply for the weekend do-it-yourselfer and it takes about two half days of actual labor.  The first day is devoted to cleaning and degreasing the existing floor surface.  Start with a good quality degreaser product to be sure you have remnants of petroleum scrubbed off the surface.  Next, use a floor detergent and stiff floor broom to clean all other the degreaser and stains off.  At this point spray water on the surface and make sure the water does not bead up.  If it does you need to degrease and clean this area some more because the epoxy will not bond.  Now let it dry overnight, preferably with a space heater.

The next day start by mixing enough epoxy to cover about a 6’ by 6’ area and spread it in the farthest corner from the door (you don’t want to literally paint yourself into a corner).  Spread the mixture with a nap roller and when this batch is applied, cast the non-slip additive over the top as if you were feeding chickens.  Repeat this procedure for each area till you get finished.

You can walk on the floor in about a day but wait three days before driving on it.

Why You Need a Tiered Mini Greenhouse

Filed under Garden | No Comments

If you’re looking for a way to make your plants thrive, then you know that there is no better solution than a greenhouse. The reason that a greenhouse is so effective at helping your plants thrive is that it provide the two most important elements for growth – light and temperature. While you may be thinking that these two components are also provided outside, it’s important to understand that greenhouses help to provide a warmer average temperature, which gives plants a considerable boost. Greenhouses also provide shelter from natural fluctuations in temperature and can shield plants from the harsh conditions of winter, provided the structure is outfitted with some form of active heating.

When it comes to selecting greenhouses for the home, the mini greenhouse reigns supreme due to its small size and relatively affordable price. Even within mini greenhouses, however, there are many different types to choose from including lean-to greenhouses, freestanding greenhouses and even small tiered mini greenhouses. The type you select will depend mostly on the amount of space you have and also on the types of plants you intend to grow. For those will space limitations, the tiered mini greenhouse is probably the best option. In case you’re not familiar with this type of structure, it’s essentially the size of a tall bookcase and typically covered in glass. The “tiers” refer to individual shelves, of which there are normally 3 or 4; hence the name 3 tier or 4 tier mini greenhouse. These structures are popular amongst people that don’t want to make a large space or financial commitment, but that want the benefits that a greenhouse can provide. These structures are quite effective when used during the warm season, since they typically contain no form of heating.

Prices for tiered greenhouses varies, though you can typically find them priced between $75 and $100 through specialty online retailers and some local garden centers. They are easy to set up and can also be stored when not in use. Ultimately, a tiered mini greenhouse may be just what you need if you’re looking to give your plants an advantage over the ambient growing conditions.

The Joy of an Electric Mattress Pad

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

Whenever the weather is cool, climbing into a cold bed is not always as welcome at the end of a busy day as it ought to be. Even though the sheets are soft and the quilts are piled high, just knowing that you are going to be good and chilled until it all warms up can be enough to make you stay up too late and be cranky the following day.   A good electric mattress pad can ease those thoughts and make your cozy bed more welcome on cold nights.

Rather than using a hot water bottle that will eventually leak or a small electric heating pad that just doesn’t heat the entire bed, using a mattress pad that has safe electric heating wires running through it heats the entire bed at once. If you only want one side to heat, that is also an option, providing you have one with dual heating controls.

You don’t even have to leave it on for very long, or even overnight to be warm. Simply turn it on for just a few minutes before you go to bed, and you will climb into covers that are delightfully warm rather than bitterly chill. Once you have the bed warmed up, you can simply turn it off or adjust the temperature and you will be warm all night. Many of them even allow you to heat only one area of your body, no more icicle toes for you!

Mattress pads are often preferred over electric blankets for several reasons. For starters, everyone knows that heat rises. Allowing the heat to rise from underneath heats you all the way around. Unlike blankets, once the bed is made with one of these, it won’t slip and slide or fall off the bed.

When morning arrives, you will find that you had a very restful night in your heated bed that was just exactly what you needed, without raising the heating bill. There is nothing more joyful than a good nights’ rest, particularly on a very cold night.

Home Bicycle Storage: Advantages of a Metal Bike Shed

Filed under Storage | No Comments

Bicycle storage sheds are made from four main materials these are; wood, metal, plastic and canvas material. Out of all of these materials metal is perhaps the one most suitable storing high value bicycles and here are the reasons why:

With steel in its natural form it will corrode quickly outdoors, outdoor buildings that are made from metal are more often than not given a tough weather resistant coating and are usually guaranteed against corrosion for many years. Therefore, the first reason why I believe a metal bicycle shed is the best material is because it requires little maintenance unlike its wooden counterpart.

Metal is also much harder to cut and break into than wood, and it’s certainly much more difficult to break into quietly. The fact is is that anyone trying to break into your bicycle store would make such a racket it would wake the entire neighborhood and consequently it is an excellent security feature in itself. Even breaking the lock would be a noisy thing to do on a metal bike shed.

Steel is very strong and also very heavy and if you live in a particularly windy part of the world then you will know that having flat sided buildings that are lightweight can accurately cause many problems. The weight of a steel bicycle storage shed is enough to keep it on the ground even the most ferocious weather.

Another great security feature of a steel bike shed is that it is inflammable so if you live in an undesirable neighborhood you’ll be pleased to hear that this is one shed that they ain’t going to be burning down!

Metal bicycle storage sheds are also rodent proof so you won’t be greeted by any little critters curled up in the bottom of your shoes! Although the walls of the shed are incredibly thin a rodent’s teeth simply won’t be able to get through it.

Metal storage sheds also come in a variety of finishes and now you can even get ones that have a wooden finish so they fit perfectly into the garden environment and then like an industrial unit.

Hopefully you can see by the above reasons why I believe that metal makes the idea material for a storage shed for high value bicycles.

The Benefits of Maia Worktops

Filed under Kitchens | No Comments

If you’re thinking about replacing your current kitchen worktop and are looking for an interesting, attractive, functional, yet affordable option, this is a good starting place for you. In this article we will set out the benefits of installing maia worktops in your kitchen. We will begin by looking at the visual appeal of a maia counter, before focusing on the practical advantages of this type of work surface. Once you have finished reading this information you should be much better placed to decide whether a maia worktop is the correct choice for your situation.

Maia worktops, created by a company called Sylmar, are often described as a solid surface counter. The material is man-made and is a mixture of colour pigments, acrylic resin and aluminium hydroxide. As a result, maia is produced in such a way that dust bacteria cannot penetrate its surface. This, along with the fact that maia surfaces smooth and seamless, means that a maia kitchen worktop is very hygienic. In addition, a maia work surface is also resistant to heat. Cooking splashes and water spills will not affect the surface, however it is not advised to place a hot pan directly onto the countertop. All maia work surfaces come with a 10 year guarantee and they are generally considered to be a very hard wearing choice. Minor scratches can even be polished away.

As well as being very practical, maia worktops are also very pleasing to the eye. They offer the appearance of stone without the need to break the bank. Available in a range of colours, maia is UV resistant, soft to the touch, and can be fitted with seamless joints. This results in a sleek finish that looks incredible in modern kitchen layouts and designs.

Maia offers a great deal to potential purchaser. Not only is it highly functional but is also very aesthetically pleasing. It represents a cost-effective choice because it provides some of the benefits of stone worktops without the hefty and unwelcome pricetag. It is also cheaper than other synthetic worktops such as corian. Maia worktops have become increasingly popular over the last year and so far I haven’t heard too many complaints from those who’ve bought them.

Range Hoods: Stylish Kitchen Ventilation

Filed under Kitchens | No Comments

The kitchen is an often used room in any home, but cooking preparations can cause condensation and odors that stay long after a meal has been enjoyed. Proper kitchen ventilation is a way to prevent damage from steam and condensation from happening and also removes stagnant, steamy air from the home before odors have a chance of seeping into materials where they stay for an indefinite amount of time. However, many people are afraid of ruining the look of a stylish kitchen by adding ventilation systems and that is one of the reasons this feature is often neglected. Fortunately, there are many kinds of ventilation systems available and these can blend in seamlessly with the kitchen’s style, can add a design element to the room or if added as an afterthought are made to be functional and attractive in appearance.

The types of kitchen ventilation available to choose from are traditional range hoods, slide-out vents, downdraft vents that may or may not be retractable and canopy hoods. Each type of ventilation has its own advantages and disadvantages. Even though the choice has to be made carefully, the benefit is that a ventilation system can be found for any kind of kitchen and building structure. Whereas the range hood blends in with the appliances and look of the kitchen, the slide-out system or retractable downdraft vent can be hidden from view when not being used. Canopy hoods are generally attractively designed and effective at ventilating the room.

Regardless of the kind of ventilation chosen for the kitchen, there are a number of features available that can meet or fulfill special requirements. For example, it is possible to have features such as fans to circulate air, automatic shutoff function, heat detection sensors and built-in lighting. There is also a wide range of styles, colors and brands to choose from so that it is possible to easily add ventilation as an afterthought.

Cleaning Kitchen Tile Floors

Filed under Kitchens | No Comments

If you have tile floors in your home, whether they are made of marble, slate, travertine, or ceramic, then you might be wondering about the best way to clean them and how often you should do so. Many people choose to put in tile floors because they want to be able to avoid vacuuming and carpet shampooing which are two projects that need to be done often and take a long time respectively. However, tile floors also need maintenance and care in order to look their best.

In terms of how often you should clean your tile floors, that partly depends on who lives in your home and what kind of dirt is being brought into your home on a daily basis. If you have pets and small children running through your house constantly, then you probably will need to clean your floors more often. But if you are a family of two who are careful to take your shoes off when you enter your home, then you will not need to clean them as often.

It also depends on what kind of cleaning you are thinking about. I use a broom and dustpan on my tile floors almost daily to get up crumbs and dirt that the kids drag in. I then use a mop about once every two weeks. But, occasionally, I use a steam cleaner to really clean the floor tiles well, especially the tile grout. A steam cleaner will use the hot steam under pressure to push dirt out of the grout and then the dirty water can be sucked away. You can rent large steam cleaners or you can purchase your own Shark portable steam cleaner. The portable machines are not as powerful, but you can use them on a weekly basis because they are easy to use and store.

You also have the ability to hire professional cleaning companies to come in and steam clean your tile floors and tile grout. If you decide to go with this option, make sure that you get a written agreement with the company you hire so that everyone is clear on what the expected level of cleanliness is after the job is done.

Window Scarf Valance Window Treatments

Filed under Decorating, Windows | No Comments

There are many ways to do it and many styles of window treatments. Some of the more simple designs are often the ones that can give you the greatest return in terms of your home design and décor features.  You don’t always need to go with the most ornate or eccentric pieces.  This is true of many interior home decorating tips.  Often, less is more.  This is as true with the window scarf valance as it is with any window treatment.

Whether you go with blinds or shades, no window valance or one that is custom designed and handmade, your windows do speak much about the design of your space.  You’ll quickly notice this if you haven’t done anything with your windows yet.  They will be drastically changed with the addition of blinds, curtains or, as we’re discussing here, a valance.

The scarf valance is just as the name implies.  It is a piece of fabric that is slung in an attractive way around the curtains and curtain rod to create a nice sweeping look.  Often, the material is a bit more sheer than the curtain panels themselves.  This isn’t a necessary feature, but it will give your curtains more depth.  Other times, the material could be the same fabric as the curtains and just hung and draped around the rod for added effect.

Curtains are one of those features that can add a lot of drama and ambiance to a room.  The color and choice of materials will help to create this look as well.  Think in terms of the type of mood you would like the room to portray.  If in a bedroom, a more velvety and luxurious type of curtain could give you that extra sense of passion.  In a living or family room, having a nice crisp fabric with clean lines can add a touch of class and elegance to your space.  You can use these ideas and then enhance your space with these window scarf valances.

Small Bathtubs for Small Spaces

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

I remember my wife I and buying our first place when we were just starting out after college. At the time, we were happy to be able to afford anything, particularly in the pricey real estate community that we lived in. Our first place was a condominium, and to say that space was a limiting factor is a bit of an understatement. Our only bathroom had just a toilet and a small shower; the sink was outside of the bathroom, as there was simply no room to fit it otherwise. When we bought the place my wife lamented about the absence of a bathtub, though we thought there was nothing that could be done. As it turned out, however, we were very wrong.

After browsing the internet one evening I noticed that several of the major bathtub manufacturers actually offered a small bathtub option. Up until this point, I had always assumed that bathtubs were only offered in specific sizes; traditional sizes. Fortunately, it turned out that we could install a bathtub in our small bathtub, and we eventually did. In our research, we found that the best way to see what was out there was to check online using any of the major search engines. A simple searched revealed dozens of different options, each with their own style of décor. We opted for a model that matched the color of our bathroom.

If you’re currently living in a small space and are frustrated at the lack of options that exist when it comes to bathtubs, then it’s important to know that small bathtubs for small bathrooms do exist. These small tubs are great in terms of their space saving capabilities, and many of these tubs can be purchased for much less than a traditional tub. The bottom line is that you need to get out there and see what’s possible; otherwise, you risk a lifetime without the soothing comfort of a warm bath. Ever heard of Stainless Steel Apron Sinks?

Filed under Kitchens | No Comments

Innovations in kitchen interiors have lead to the production of modern fixtures such as stainless steel apron sinks. This type of kitchen structure has been popularized by modern kitchen designs all over the world.

Apron sinks do not look like traditional sinks. For one, they have a front wall design that acts as a barrier between the users and sink. The main idea behind the smooth wall is to prevent people from getting wet while using the sink. Although seemingly threading on common sense, the simple design scores big in practicality. Water commonly splashes outside the wash area. Thus, people need to use aprons to protect them. This is where the innovation of apron sinks enters.

The best material by which one can complement the design of the sink is stainless steel. As we all know, stainless steel does not accumulate rust. With this in mind, you can be sure that stainless steel apron sinks are investments that can last for a lifetime. Porcelain sinks are the traditional choice. But over time, they tend to turn yellow or brown due to normal wear and tear. This prompts the user to seek new sinks as replacement.

The look and feel of an apron sink made of stainless steel should also be considered. The natural color and finish of these sinks are very stylish and modern. It can also be easily complemented with modern faucets and bidet fixtures. With this in mind, the sink can easily be upgraded and renovated if you want to. And since stainless steel is very durable, you still have the time to save up for future renovations. On that note, there is no need for you to worry that your sink won’t last until you have the budget. So now, do you think a stainless steel apron sink would work for you?

Neem for Nontoxic Pest Control

Filed under General Home | No Comments

Picnics, outdoor activities, and sports make up the bulk of my family’s summer time schedule.  We love all these things and best of all, we have the luxury of enjoying each of these activities in our own backyard.   One thing that all of us agree on during our summer together is that we absolutely hate creepy crawling  insects.  Yes we know that they are essential for the environment and even our home, but to be honest,  having bugs crawl over us during every outdoor activity just isn’t appealing.  What can we do about it?  Well we looked into the best ways to control these insects and we tried to do it naturally.  Here are few things we learned.

Insect control  by definition means to either eliminate or reduce the amount of insects within an area.  For most of us, that would just be our yards but insect control is often used on a larger scale by municipalities.

With the rising concern over the environment plus the concern of keeping toxins around our children and pets, nontoxic pest control alternatives are eagerly sought after by many people.  One botanical oil that has proven to be highly effective at insect control is neem oil.  The oil is extracted from the seeds and other parts of the neem tree.  This extract is then sprayed on leaves.  When leaf-eating insects consume the treated leaves, the neem oil somehow interrupts the hormonal development of many insects, causing them to die when they either emerge from the eggs or when trying to molt.  For household insect control, the neem oil preparations can be effective on a wide range of insects including ants, bedbugs, cockroaches, flies, snails, termites and mosquitoes.  Neem oil has been proven to be very safe to humans and animal life, so much so that the EPA has exempted it from restrictions so that it can be used on edible and ornamental plants.

This summer we plan on using neem oil on as much of our outdoor landscape as possible so as to eliminate these bugs and critters from interrupting our summer fun. If you too dislike these bugs and wish to learn more, a search online will reveal more information about the use of neem oil for natural insect control as well as other solutions to keep your backyard comfortable.  One minor side note…if you are attempting to use the neem oil for mosquito control, you’ll have to look elsewhere.  Mosquitoes are unique in that they must be trapped or killed using lures such as carbon dioxide, heat or other chemicals.  Neem won’t do it.

In summary, we are happy to have discovered through our research that today, we are able to have insect control options that will not harm our kids, our pets or the environment.

All About Space Heaters: Propane, Kerosene and Halogen Heaters

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

A space heater is an appliance that warms a small area. They are often called portable heaters, room heaters, or axillary heaters. Space heaters are often used to save energy and money on heating costs. When using them, it is more cost effective to turn down the central heating system and use the space heater as a supplement. The most common types of space heaters are heated by halogen, electric, propane and kerosene.

Halogen heaters use light from a halogen light bulb to produce heat. These units are compact, lightweight, and easy to use. They are high in efficiency and cleanliness.

Electric heaters usually have ceramic heating elements and use fan forced blowers to distribute heat. They heat evenly and are among the most common and cheapest of space heaters.

Propane heaters and kerosene heaters produce a lot of heat. Most popular propane heaters have a low-oxygen shut off valve. Likewise, many newer kerosene heaters have a tip over switch. Because of open flames and chance of carbon-monoxide poisoning, both propane and kerosene heaters are best used outdoors or in an area with good ventilation.

There are several common sense safety tips to consider when operating a space heater in your home. If placed too closely to fabrics or furniture, the heaters may cause a fire hazard. They can also cause burns to skin or clothing. If there is an issue with fuses blowing or breakers tripping it may be the result of overloaded electrical circuits and you may need to consult an electrician. Always check the safety manual for the specific heater purchased.

Space heaters can be purchased at the neighborhood hardware store, at big box stores, or at online retailers. They are convenient, portable, and reasonably priced. All in all, space heaters give you a great bang for your buck!

Why Spring Is Right For Installing A Bathroom Ceiling Heater

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

If you think you’re probably going to get around to installing that ceiling heater in your bathroom this winter, maybe you should think again. Why wait until it begins to get cold to compete with everybody else when you’re trying to locate a contractor? Waiting will also have you watching the prices getting hiked up for heaters of all kinds down at your local hardware store or Home Depot when it starts to get cold in September and October.

Well as a homeowner, you can fight back! All retailers have to clear inventory periodically and out-of-season appliances are an ideal area for them to target. Ever try to buy an air conditioner in January? You’ll find the prices a lot lower than they were in June, and it’s not unheard of to get a further price reduction by speaking to a manager. He knows he’ll have next year’s inventory coming soon so you really do have a little bargaining power. For the same reason springtime is a perfect time to go shopping for that bathroom ceiling here that will keep you and your family more comfortable for several months a year, every year.

It also stands to reason that anyone whose business is installing heating units will be more willing to talk price in the spring, and they’re sure to have you slotted into their schedule more easily at that time as well. If you’re skeptical just call around a little bit and be prepared to bargain.

It could be the perfect place to direct some of that tax refund you’re hopefully getting, into an investment in your home that will incrementally increase its attractiveness to a buyer should you ever decide to sell. Naturally you will appreciate increased comfort in your bathroom without having to drag in unwieldy and dangerous portable space heaters. Don’t wait, the time to finally install bathroom ceiling heaters might just be now.

The Convenience of Metal Carports

Filed under Garages | No Comments

If you’re considering purchasing a prefabricated metal carport rather than facing the expense and inconvenience of building an addition onto your home, here are a few facts that may help you make your decision:

The metal carport offers more than just a place to park your car. As a matter of fact, metal carports can also shelter boats and campers as well as house an at home gaming playroom area, office, or work space for mechanics or other craftsman occupations and hobbies.

Metal carports offer convenience and a budget friendly way to add the extra space a homeowner needs. They help to avoid the high costs of construction to add a garage or carport area to the home and also prevent the occupants of the home from being inconvenienced by the noise, dust and extended time period construction often brings with it. Many metal carport manufacturers and distributors include erecting the structures on your property when a purchase is made. This alleviates your need to hire professionals or to have to build it on your own.

Metal carports are durable and long lasting. They can even outlast some of the homes to which they’re attached! Since they’re made of metal rather than wood, they’re termite proof, dry rot proof, won’t warp, expand or contract with exposure to temperature and the elements. They require only minimal upkeep and cleaning and are created to withstand snow and wind.

When compared to the high cost of a permanent addition to the home, metal carports are highly cost effective. In comparison to an actual construction build, metal carports are low cost to build and maintain while still bringing most of the same benefits of an addition to the home. They also reduce the price of your insurance because there is no risk of fire to the home’s structure.

Your metal carport can be manufactured to match your home and can even be painted the same color so it blends in cohesively with your current architectural style. There are various roof options, door options and window choices and in fully closed metal carports, there are also upgrades that can be purchased. These upgrades include insulation, storage and other options.

Metal carports are budget friendly, durable structures that can offer extra space, protection from the elements and even a shady spot to place your patio table and chairs when entertaining outdoors. When you’ve decided to add a metal carport to your property, as a precaution, be sure to inquire if erecting of the structure is included in the purchase price and if not, research what it may cost to have a contractor do it for you.
