Variations of Central Heating Radiators

Filed under Ventilation | No Comments

Generally central heating radiators are installed in your home or workspace to keep it warm and cosy. There are many different designs and styles of radiators available to the consumer in all different sizes and colours available to fit any type of home decor.

Radiators not only vary in size but they also vary in their heat output. It is very important to choose the right radiator for the right job or room so you need to make sure you choose the correct one to fit all your needs.

There are three different types of radiator for different functions;

The k1 or type 11 radiator is a single panel single convector that normally consists of one steel panel on the front and it usually has one convector otherwise known as a fin. In order to heat a room to a decent temperature level you have to have a central heating radiator with sufficient capacity to do the job efficiently so it is more cost-effective. To make sure you get it right you can calculate the expected heat loss so you know the right size of radiator to buy.

P+ or type 21 radiators are also known as double panel single convectors. These radiators have two steel panels at the front and rear and usually consist of one fin or convector. Once again you need to make sure that you purchase a radiator that has good capacity, is efficient, and satisfies the heat loss calculation for the room in question.

Double panel double convective radiators are known as K2 or type 22 radiators. They generally have two steel panels to the front and rear and two convectors. A great example of one of these types of radiator is the Myson premier round top radiator.

Any type of radiators heat output is measured in British thermal units per hour or BTU / HR. The higher the value, the more heat the radiator produces. Higher Btu measurements are often reflected in higher prices but all difference styles will be available no matter what the BTU is.  Whether you are looking at aluminium, cast iron or chrome radiators, always check the BTU and make sure they are the right radiator for the size of room they will be heating.

How to Maintain Shower Curtains

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Something I often get asked is: ‘why do I need to maintain my shower curtains? Doesn’t the water from the shower wash them and keep them clean for me?’

While this might seem logical on paper, it is actually that water from the shower that can cause your shower curtains to grow mould and to become stale.

When I talk about ‘maintaining’ your shower curtain I’m really talking about cleaning it. It’s certainly not necessary to clean a shower curtain, if you want to keep the same one for a long period of time it is definitely recommended.

The first thing that you need to do is to take down the shower curtain by first removing it from the curtain rail. This is usually fairly easy to do, although you might need to stand on a step ladder to do it.

Once you’ve taken it down, find a large area where you can lay it out flat (outdoor on a patio is a good spot) that you don’t mind getting when (which is why I advise doing it outdoors). Depending on whether your shower curtain is plastic or made from fabric, the cleaning products that you need to use are slightly different, but the cleaning technique remains the same.

What you should do it is get a sponge, a bucket (filled with water mixed with the cleaning solution) and some rubber gloves on (to protect your skin). From here you want to rub out all the areas and parts of limescale from the shower curtain, paying special attention to the areas that are most in contact with water from the shower.

After you’ve cleaned both sides, hang the curtain up on your washing line and leave it for an hour. This will allow it to dry and it’ll also allow the smell of the solution to wear off (so it doesn’t stink out your bathroom).

The best place to buy curtain cleaning products is from large furniture stores (such as IKEA). While you can just use sugar soap (or other basic cleaning products), most furniture stores sell products that have been specially made for cleaning shower curtains.

They also sell other related products, such as shower curtain rails and hookless shower curtains (which are easier to take down and to clean).

Why Mirrored Furniture Often Looks Tacky

Filed under Decorating, Furniture | Comments Off

Call me judgmental all you want but the way you choose to decorate the rooms in your home says a whole lot about your personality and how you behave. The furnishings you have in the house, the way you set them up, and the general cleanliness of your house can say anything from: “I’m a working professional and I take my life seriously,” to “I’m a terrible slob and I don’t care how I come off to other people.” Everyone falls somewhere on the broad spectrum of personality traits and everyone’s furniture falls somewhere between well put together and complete and total mess.

To avoid putting off the wrong message you need to take care to decorate your rooms and really strive to achieve the look you want. The general rule of thumb when designing a room is: the simpler the better. Less clutter, more color, and less dirt will make your house (and in some ways, your personality) seem more appealing to other people when they come to visit. Chances are all of the furniture you end up putting in your home is going to be largely determined by budget and practicality but when you do have room to choose you should choose carefully.

Out of all the furniture types in the world, mirrored furniture is often the most difficult to use correctly. If you are trying to get a particular look, whether its art deco, minimalism, Venetian, or what have you, you can use mirrored accent pieces to push you forward into the “well put together” category. However, if you use too much of a good thing you will fall into the “messy” category really quick when using mirrors.

Mirrored furniture, particularly black mirrored furniture, has this terrible tendency to look tacky. When something looks tacky it means that it looks cheap and garish. You never want to come across cheap and garish so you should try to avoid tacky looks at all cost. Mirrored furniture gets tacky when there is too much of it. You don’t want to have a mirrored piece that is completely made out of mirrors and you don’t want to stuff mirrored pieces into every corner of your room.

For helpful information on how to use mirrored furniture correctly check out Mirrored Furniture Gallery.

What You Need to Know About Wet Rooms

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Wet rooms or walk in shower enclosures are built for 2 reasons. One, to provide space for bathing which is a basic human need, and two is to class up a space which is otherwise associated with less than desirable functions. If you are in the market for a new bath enclosure, there are factors that need to be considered such as the following:

Space

You cannot just have an enclosure installed and hope that the rest will take care of themselves. Before you can even think about what design you want, it is imperative to determine how much available space there is so that installation will be a breeze.
The point of having these fixtures installed is to create the illusion of a spacious bathroom. It is a known fact that most homes are designed in such a way that there is very little room for bathrooms and showers which means creating a spacious feel would be in order.

Cost

Glass showers vary in cost depending on the type of material to be used. Not all glasses have the same quality therefore it is up to you to figure out exactly what you want for your bathroom and how much money you can actually shell out.

In order to make informed decisions especially when it comes to the financial aspect of the endeavor, comparing prevailing prices should always be part of the process. You are not to purchase anything unless you have gathered sufficient information regarding the financial ramifications of the changes you are planning to do.

Checking Products Online

If you do not have much time to devote to scouting product options, going online is the next best thing. You can look at what is out there without actually having to be at any actual store. Another upside to this option is that you can compare prices easily.

Do It Yourself Black Mold Removal Guide

Filed under Renovations, Safety | No Comments

Black mold is a dangerous substance that can grow in your home and not only cause damages to your walls, but also put you and your family at risk for some serious health problems, up to and including death.  While most cases, if caught early are able to be taken care of by the home owner and don’t pose much of a risk, if taken care of improperly or not at all, then it can grow into a large, deadly problem.  I am going to give you the do’s and don’ts of black mold removal so that you can hopefully take care of it yourself.

The first thing you’ll want to do is to look into the scope of the problem.  If the mold has been undetected for a while, it will have grown into a larger, more expansive area.  If it is a smaller area, then you should be able to do it yourself, but if you are concerned that the area may be too big, then you should call a professional and have it inspected.

Once you have determined that you will be able to do the removal yourself, then you’ll want to get a specialized black mold removal and cleaning product.  Do not use bleach, because while it may seem like it will be able to remove the mold, it actually makes the problem worse.  Bleach does not kill the mold at the roots, instead it will only whiten the black mold making it seem like you removed it, but it will continue to grow putting you at further risk.  You’ll be able to find the mold or mildew cleaning products at your local grocery store or hardware store.

You’ll want to first seal off the area from possibly exposing other rooms of the house.  You can open a window to ventilate the room better.  Then, you’ll want to use a wet cloth to pat the area of of mold.  If the mold is dry when you are scrubbing, then it can be released into the air and if you breath it in it could cause respiratory problems.  Then, once it is wet, just use the cleaning spray that you purchased by following the directions on there, and you’ll have the mold cleaned up in no time.

The Secret of Faux Wood Blinds

Filed under Windows | No Comments

When it comes to purchasing “made to measure wooden blinds,” there are a lot of different factors that need to be taken into consideration early on in the process. Along with deciding on what style of faux wood blinds you like you need to make a decision on how they are to be installed in the home and where and for what purpose. In this article we will tackle the things you want to consider when talking about installing made to measure discount faux wood blinds.

First off you are required to choose what type of custom faux wood blinds you will need. There are two types of mountings for wooden blinds available those that suit within the opening and those that sit outside it. Definitely if you like to make a more uniformed look in your home then using made to measure faux wood blinds that are suited inside are best. On the other hand, if you happen to have wooden blinds that fitting the mounting inside them would show their limitations then the externally mounted kinds are the better choice for you.

When it comes to increasing your faux wood blinds if you pick the second choice then you need to ensure you have enough hardware to increase them with. Also you need to make sure that there is enough left to allow them to overhang on each side of the window. But if you mean to use wooden blinds that are increased inside the window area it is significant that there is plenty of space for the hardware of the wooden blinds to be set in place.

After doing a decision as to what form of mounting to use for mounting your windows you want to measure the window where they are to be installed. It is significant that you measure every window where the faux wood blinds to be suited in three different places. Not only must you measure each window length on the left and right but also the width across the middle.

A Garage Storage Systems: The Perfect Solution for Needed Extra Space

Filed under Garages, Organization, Storage | No Comments

You probably are one of those guilty people that have made their garage into a huge dumping ground. You may not have noticed it until the day that you find out you can no longer fit your car inside your garage. By creating a garage storage system based on your daily lifestyle, or even based on the activities that you do occasionally, you can make plenty of room in your garage for the things that desperately need storing up. Even your car will find its way back to its old home.

When organizing your garage space, you should let your common sense rule. For example, when storing your garden tools, you should place them near the doorway that leads to your backyard. If gardening is a great passion, or if you live in a region where the weather calls for continuous garden maintenance, it would be wise to invest in a rolling garden tool organizer. This tool organizer is very convenient when it comes to storing rakes, shovels, and other hand tools needed for gardening. You can easily tag this cart along to the garden, which means that you can bring all the necessary equipment in one go.

For sports gears, you can either hang or hook them up on the wall. There are great wall storage systems for this. Resist the urge to just prop them up against the garage wall. This careless approach doesn’t save up space and you could end up with a damaged gear the next time you pick it up off your floor. To create an organized space, you should have a system for classifying things. You can systematize them according to their uses and how often they are needed. A pulley system would make it easier for even the youngest person in your house to access heavier sport equipment like a bicycle.

Remember to always keep a garbage can in your garage so you don’t have to leave your trash lying anywhere inside your garage. You can use a garbage can with working wheels for an easier transport when you have to take it out to the curb.

JM Open-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Filed under Renovations | No Comments

Johns Manville is a Berkshire Hathaway company operated by none other than Warren Buffett. On May 27, 2010 they announced that their company was releasing the ocSPF insulation made of low-density polyurethane open-cell spray foam insulation. This insulation was designed for both residential and commercial applications. They recommend use in floors, walls, attics, and ceilings. Attic insulation is well known as one of the most important aspects of making a home energy efficient. The main benefit of JM ocSPF however is its ability to insulate cavities of any shape which can create a seamless protective barrier. This barrier minimizes and even eliminates air leakage providing the most potent advantage.

This insulation is both mold and mildew resistant, has sound barrier properties, and gives an impressive R-value of 3.8 per inch. That means that 5.5 inches of this insulation will give you an R-value of 19. When the insulation is sprayed, it expands at a measure of 120 times its initial volume. This new insulation reduces jobsite odor and improves safety for installers due to its 100% reactive catalysts.

From the press release Mike Lawrence vice president and manager of the business stated, “We’re excited to announce the expansion of our spray foam product line with the launch of JM ocSPF insulation. We’re introducing JM ocSPF insulation with our customers in mind. Now, JM customers can order both fiber glass insulation and closed- and open-cell foam efficiently from one manufacturer, and with the reassurance that they are receiving quality products from Johns Manville.”

This insulation will maintain its performance over time and is recommended for climate zones 1,2,3, and 4 including the South and Pacific coast of the U.S. Another advantage is that JM ocSPF can be installed with any of JM’s fiberglass insulation products. They highly recommend putting an intumescent ignition barrier coating over the insulation.

Perhaps it is time to redecorate your kitchen to improve your design. Kitchen design, kitchen installation is always done best when you know what you want. Thus, if you are redesigning your country, go on the Internet now and learn about the latest styles that are available.

Main points to consider

Photo galleries are set up on the Internet to give you an idea how your kitchen will look once it has been finished. Thus, the main thing to consider when it comes to kitchen design, kitchen installation is to consider your budget, styles, and what you want from the finished product.

Some of the styles to consider include the contemporary kitchens, country style, old world, outdoor, traditional, and the transitional kitchens.

Transitional kitchen designs may cost a little more than some of the old styles, yet the design is worth considering. Transitional kitchens often include a combination of modern and classic designs. You have a mixture of handmade materials, which include texture and finishes.

Some of the popular transitional kitchens you can consider as examples are the Shaker kitchens, or the Arts and Crafts. In this setting, colored palettes are added to offset bamboo floors, and there is a showcase of panels and lighting.

Some of the kitchen designs are created to present a European theme, while others are designed to create a Dutch cottage. Yet, there is the Normandy, Italian Villa look, Chateau French style, Castle, Medieval, Mediterranean, and Tuscan look to consider.

The Hamilton Beach Toastation 22708H 2 Slice Toaster Oven

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

The Hamilton beach toastation is about the cheapest possible toaster oven we can get, especially if we want good quality.

If you read a number of toaster oven reviews you will see that it is one model that is well respected. This is definitely one of the best possible choices if we want to spend a minimal amount of money but still get a great model.

We can easily toast bagels or toast and the oven is large enough for us to do small pizzas and items like nuggets etc. We will find that it is small enough to be fairly inconspicuous on the counter top and it will not take up all the room. There is no doubt this is a great little model for those who want a handy way to quickly prepare small amounts of food with out using the main oven.

We should see some fairly large savings on costs as we will be using less than half the power our main oven consumes. It is also simply much easier and quicker of we have a counter top oven for quickly heating or cooking items.

The toastation is a great purchase and you will actually find that it is about as cheap to purchase as a simple toaster that does not have all of these extra benefits. It is now a very popular choice and is certainly well worth thinking about buying if you want something small and convenient at a fantastic price.

A Toast To Love

More and more people are finding items like this really free up their time in the kitchen as it makes life that little bit easier. We should certainly see a dramatic cut in the costs of our electric bills if nothing else and this is just another incentive to use one when we can.

A Guide To uPVC Window Handles

Filed under Windows | No Comments

If your uPVC windows have reached a certain age, you may have noticed that certain parts are not working as well as they should.  Often it is the uPVC window handles that are to blame, given that they get a lot of wear and tear over the years.  Many homeowners put up with this problem, not knowing that it is not that difficult to replace these handles if they want to.  In this article we will give a short guide to how and why you should consider changing old or damaged uPVC window handles.

•    Your old handles are not just old fashioned and less attractive than newer models – they hold a lot more bacteria, are less secure and less safe than newer styled window handles.  Most homeowners lose the keys to uPVC windows shortly after they are originally installed.  If your windows were installed 20 -30 years ago, the chances are you never locked them in the first place.  In these present times this can be a security issue.
•    If you do, for any of the above reasons, decide to change your uPVC window handles, then the best place to start is to find out who the manufacturer of your present window handles was.  In many cases if you open the window and look where the lock strip is you will see the name of the manufacturer stamped.  If not then the installer of your windows should be able to help.
•    Take down any relevant and visual details of your existing handles – what kind of lock is in place, what size is the handle, etc.  All of this information will be useful.  If you are in doubt, you can also take a digital photo of the handles and upload it onto your computer.

•    Contact the manufacturer by phone or online.  If you can send him the photograph of your existing uPVC window handles, he will probably immediately recognize them and be able to recommend to you a more up to date version that will suit.  You can then either fit the new handles yourself or get a local tradesman to carry out the task for you.

Advantages of Masticating Juicers

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

If you are interested in buying a juicer machine so that you can make healthy juices at home, you may have heard of masticating juicers. Masticating simply means to chew, and it gives a clue to how these machines work – instead of using fast spinning blades to shred everything up, they use slowly revolving gears or augers to crush the liquid out of your fruits and vegetables.

There are some significant advantages to the masticating juicer system.

Slower speed means no air gets mixed in to the juice. This reduces deterioration when the juice reacts with oxygen in air. Also, you don’t get that layer of gray froth that you see on juice made with regular, high speed machines

Unlike high speed machines, no heat is generated when the juice is extracted. In a regular high speed juicer, the blades can spin at up to 5000RPM – the heat resulting can sterilize the juice it touches, resulting in lower vitamin and enzyme levels.

You can juice harder, tougher ingredients such as wheat grass and herbs. Regular high speed juicers cannot process wheat grass because it is too stringy, but the slow crushing action of masticating juicers is ideal for this.

More liquid is actually extracted with the slow juicing method. The great force generated by the slow action of the gears means that you are left with very dry pulp – a good indication that a high percentage of juice has successfully been extracted.

So are there downsides to a masticating juicer? Yes there are. They are slower at making juice, and they are more expensive. If you have a very busy schedule then you may be better off with a high speed juicer instead. Making a batch of about 6 glasses of juice (including cleanup) will take about 30 minutes with a masticating juicer, and about 15-20 minutes with a fast juicer like the Jack Lalanne Power juicer or the Breville Juice fountain.

In terms of price, you can expect to pay at least half as much again for a masticating juicer of similar quality and size to a normal centrifugal machine.

Despite these two factors, many people still prefer these slower juicers. The fact that you get better juice, greater versatility, and higher juice extraction are generally enough to outweigh the higher cost and extra time you put in.

Garage Floor Covering Options

Filed under Flooring, Garages | No Comments

Laying down a garage floor covering helps to protect and prolong the life of your garage floor. There are different options to choose from such as epoxies, paint or rubberized covering that lock together. Costs will vary for covering your garage floor depending on the size of your particular floor and the type of covering you choose.

Epoxies are a great way to protect your floor. They come in different colors and make your floor smooth and clean looking. They make the floor very easy to clean such as mopping up oil spills or fluids. Preparation and application are usually very easy though it can take some work. You should first clean your floor of any impurities with muriatic acid or other equivalent material. Once floor is clear of items and clean, you can apply the epoxy. It takes a couple gallons at about 100 dollars to do a 800 squarefoot garage floor though cost will vary depending on size. Epoxies usually take about 24 hours to cure enough to walk on and 48 to drive your car on.

Painting your garage floor is perhaps the simplest covering you can do. Preparation is the same as for epoxies however floor paint can be cheaper than epoxy or other coverings. The benefits are that it is also easier to clean and dust and dirt are kept from going into the air as they adhere to the paint after it has dried. If floors are not prepared properly for paint or epoxy, the covering will tend to come up sooner. This is especially true if you have oil spills that have soaked into the cement.

Cool solutions for covering your garage floor are ribbed garage floor mats. These are large or sections mats that have ribs or circles molded into them for traction. They are usually very thin and either roll on in one large piece or can be locked into each other using smaller squares. This is by far the best and most expensive covering for a garage. It completely protects the floor from heavy equipment being moved or dropped and from the elements. It is just like carpet for your garage only the material is usually rubber. These covering retail from about 200 to 400 dollars and can be more depending on the manufacturer and the size of your garage

Why Use a King Size Duvet Cover?

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

Some people may wonder why they should go to the trouble of using a king size duvet cover when the duvet or comforter looks great as it is. Well, there are actually many advantages to using duvet covers, as Europeans have known for a long time. The cover will protect the bedding inside, is usually easier to clean and the duvet cover can be changed when the room is redecorated.

If you have purchased a nice duvet or down comforter, you will want to protect it from dirt and stains. Duvet covers provide an extra layer of protection so that the bedding inside is not exposed to as much wear and tear and does not get as soiled. This is especially helpful if you have pets that like to spend time on the bed, or if you are the type of person who likes to watch TV and have a snack in your bedroom.

King sized duvets and comforters are pretty large, and can be very awkward to clean. Many will not fit into a home washing machine, which means that you have to take a trip to a commercial laundrymat or dry cleaner whenever you wish to clean your bedding. If you use a duvet cover, you can just pop it in the washing machine and not worry about cleaning the comforter itself very often.

Another advantage of using duvet covers is that you can easily change the look of your bed when it is time to redecorate the room. Keep your favorite warm comforter and just find a new duvet cover to match the new color scheme. Some people like to have a couple different duvet covers and switch back and forth every once in a while.

Now that more people are taking advantage of duvet covers, retailers have been carrying a lot more variety. You can find many different printed and solid color duvet covers to fit any sized bed, so besides getting one for the master bedroom, you can outfit your entire home. Matching sets including a bed skirt and pillow shams are also available for those who like an easy, coordinated look in their bedroom. Try a duvet cover – you will be glad you did!

Use A Desktop Organizer To Organize your Bills and Correspondence

Filed under Organization | No Comments

Don’t Get Caught Up in Chasing Papers

Chasing papers not only wastes your time, it’s an energy zapper as well. Avoid the problem by using a desktop organizer to assist you in arranging your important bills and paperwork. There are a number of styles and colors of organizers on the Internet that will complement various decors. For a more modern theme, you may want to choose a desktop organizer white in color and made of durable plastic. If you live in a home with more traditional styling, then there are a number of organizers made of wood, such as mahogany, cherry or oak that you can incorporate onto your desktop.

Manage your Time Much More Effectively

You might also want to consider desktop organizer software for your computer. You can manage appointments, such as doctor visits or appointments with the hairdresser via your PC. A desktop mail organizer can also come in handy for arranging the bills and papers you receive in the mail and the materials and correspondence you plan to send out by way of snail mail.

Determining your Organizational Needs

To use any type of filing or organizational system, you’ll need to delineate what you have in the way of important papers and receipts. Make separate files for your car payments and expenses, credit card statements, investment information, medical bills, and tax records. Keep guarantees, warranties, life insurance policies and a copy of your will in separate files too. You may want to scan regular expenses and centralize them on your computer as well. That way, you’ll have two ways to access the data.

The Best Dressing Table Sets

Filed under Furniture | No Comments

If you are choosing furniture for your bedroom then I would not be surprised if you had the a dressing table set way down at the bottom of your list. The reason? Well, many people actually consider the dressing table to be a luxury item rather than a necessity.

When it comes down to it, however, I find that I couldn’t disagree more.

If you actually take time to consider what a dressing table is and what it can do for you you will find that it is in fact a very practical and functional piece of furniture, and so long as you choose the right one it could well be a friend for life! A good dressing table should have enough storage space to keep your bedroom tidy (well tidier!) and it will create your own personal space where you can sit in front of the mirror and make yourself up for that big night out.

How do you choose the dressing table that is right for you? There is a vast array of choice at the moment so whether you prefer a modern or traditional design you will be able to find a dressing table set that you like. A typical Dressing Table set will include a dressing table, a mirror and an upholstered stool. If you are feeling plush and have enough cash and the room to accommodate it you should consider the impressive double pedestal dressing table; these are usually solidly built and very impressive with a set of drawers or a door positioned on either side of the table. If the double pedestal is out of your reach then a solid wood single pedestal dressing table will be a more than adequate substitute.

If you are after a contemporary style then you should be looking more at the console tables. Technically I don’t class these as dressing tables proper (they are more like desks), but they can perform the same function and are available in wider variety of styles and materials, including shiny metallic, modern finishes.

In closing then, every woman should have space for a dressing table in her life. As well as being luxury items they are also very practical and will provide convenient storage for the little essentials in your life, such as your makeup, manicure set, hair dryer and hairbrush.

Tips for Finding Replacement Glider Cushions

Filed under Garden, Seating | No Comments

Whether you have an indoor or outdoor glider, chances are that the cushions to the glider will wear out much, much sooner than the actual glider does.  Even if you’re not having the feeling that your glider isn’t nearly as comfortable as it used to be, you might change the décor of your room and need to change your glider cushions to match.  Here are some tips to find a glider replacement cushions.

First thing first, you are going to have to find a cushion that fits your glider.  This should be done before you even search around for your car keys to go to the store or fire up your internet browser to look at some websites.  Take the cushion off of your glider and measure its dimensions.  Most chairs come in a few set sizes so you should be able to find one that fits your chair like a glove as long as you know the size beforehand.

Keep in mind when you’re shopping that your cushions are going to be most likely taking a beating, regardless of if they’re inside or outside, from people sitting, eating, and drinking on them.  Try to find cushions that have fabric protection installed with them.  For outdoor gliders, this means finding cushions that are fade-proof, water-proof, and also able to resist mold and mildew.  Indoor cushions don’t need to be nearly this tough, but should usually include Scotch Guard or some other fabric protection to make sure that spills and other accidents don’t ruin the cushion.

Finally, when you’re looking at cushions, don’t forget to match the pattern you’ll be getting for your glider with those of the furniture and room around it.  While they don’t need to match exactly, you should have a zebra-print cushion in a leopard-spotted room!

These three tips will help you greatly in picking out the right glider cushion for you.

What is A Cultured Marble Shower Base?

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

If you’ve been reading about the newest options in shower bases, you’ve probably found out that faux marble shower bases by companies like Swanstone have some really affordable designs. But if you don’t want to consider the faux designs or the acrylic shower bases in the newest AcryLUX materials and coatings, and want marble, yet find it too pricey, then I suggest the latest cultured marble shower base designs. Sure, but what is cultured marble? How easy is it to work? Will it look real?

Why Choose Cultured Over Real Marble

Cultured marble bases are incredibly versatile because they are made from marble dust and resin and therefore are easier to mold, cut and shape into custom sizes and designs. It’s a lot easier to work with and install the cultured shower stall bases than the real cut stone ones. They are also easier to keep clean and maintain. Perhaps the biggest advantage of choosing this product over others, is to have a really wide selection of colors, textures and natural-looking patterns to select from. Most of the cultured designs are very realistic, flawlessly imitating the best Italian marble that would normally be out of most people’s price range when building or renovating a bathroom shower.

Portofino Collections

Marble and cultured marble corner shower bases, neo-angle shapes and small cubical bases are possible for a very affordable price, however, the best use of marble is when constructing a wetroom flooring systems or a large walk in shower that may also require matching wall panels. If you need some inspiration and want to see some of the great product ranges available, just go to Verona Marble Company and have a look at their Portofino Collection. If you don’t see the sleek white or beige or naturally mottled color combination of stone you need, it’s possible to order your very own color combination.

The Cheap Alternatives

Most stone or marble floors and bathroom shower bases will be expensive if you have a large area to cover. If you need really quick solutions, try a tile shower base instead or buy a ready made modular acrylic or fiberglass receptor. The best are a mix of acrylic with fiberglass reinforcement. If white isn’t right, many companies are now offering pebbled textures and stone-like patterns.

LED lighting really has revolutionised the outdoor lighting market as it’s low power requirements have allow them to be powered by multiple sources.

One of the main cost of outside lighting used to be the cost of installing it, you would  have to run cable underground between the lights and then in to your home. This was not just a costly thing to have done but it would also create a lot of disturbance to the front of your home. 5 Useful Sheet Metal Tools

Filed under Renovations | No Comments

Here are 5 great tools to help you in your sheet metal work:

  1. The propane torch is essential for annealing the metal before working it. Annealing softens the metal, making it easier to work and less prone to breakage when formed. especially useful if you do repoussé or chasing.
  2. Sheet metal shears are the mess-free way of cutting sheet metal. Get a nice chunky table or floor-standing model, instead of crushing every bone in your hand by insisting on using hand shears!
  3. A drill press is the only sensible way to drill sheet metal. Using a hand-held electric drill is asking for trouble, as the drill may get stuck, sending the sheet metal whirling across the room, or straining your wrist severely. Secure the sheet metal to be drilled to the drill press table using heavy clamps and start working. Drill using HSS-drills, slow revs and cooling lubricant – that way your drill bits will live longer.
  4. A sheet metal bending brake is just the thing when you need to make straight, even bends in sheet metal. Using this type of machine involves clamping the workpiece between two steel bars called the bed and the clamping leaf – and then bending the piece by forcing it into the desired angle with a heavy hinged steel bar known as the bending leaf. Sometimes the bending leaf has counterweights attached to help lift its weight when bending thick sheets. This is metalworking after all – not a work out. Sheet metal brakes can be had from small tabletop models to large floorstanders, and can be used to make anything from small brackets to rain gutters.
  5. A pop riveting gun – yes that’s right! Not very sophisticated or anything, but it sure is an easy way of joining two pieces of sheet metal. Just drill holes slightly larger than the rivets, plop in the rivets and there you go. Pop rivets are usually made of aluminum, and not thicker than a few milimeters, so they won’t have immense strength like old-fashioned iron rivets with a cross-section of half an inch, but they will do fine for less critical assembly.

The Need for Cast Iron Radiators

Filed under Ventilation | No Comments

For heating a house, industrial space or office with a hip retro style, cast iron radiators are great options. These classic appliances made their first appearance during the 1860s as free stranding units. By the time the 19th century rolled around, the steam boiler and hot water features made two-piped radiators extremely popular and very much in demand with homeowners everywhere. Victorian radiators are the height of style with decorative scroll work and floral designs. The rugged look is surprisingly popular with modern homeowners. Replicas and refurbished units are readily available today. In fact, it is very rare to find an authentic radiator of this type these days.

Purchasing a quality cast iron radiator is a great option for someone who is renovating a home and is looking for something affordable. These appliances typically cost less than modern systems and the classic look cannot be matched by current designs. You get the same efficiency you get with a contemporary unit in an attractive package. The demand for the classic look is slowly changing the marketplace. There are now some manufacturers that are attempting to incorporate those classic designs into their updated equipment and these designs are very popular.

Cast iron is capable of retaining a lot of heat. It far outperforms other materials when evaluated for absorbing and maintaining heat. Taken together, these qualities make the cast iron radiator both durable and efficient.

A patio is a beautiful place to entertain and relax, and one will want to outfit it comfortably. Fortunately, there are ways to save money on patio furnishings without sacrificing look and charm.

Shopping at a patio cushion clearance is an excellent way to save money instantly. In most cases, there is nothing wrong with the cushions that are on clearance, they have just been overstocked. It is possible to find the same quality at a sale that one would find buying a brand new cushion for twice as much or more.

To find clearances, one should monitor their favorite patio furnishing retailers in their area. Most stores send out weekly flyers that list sales, or send e-mails to customers that want them to notify them of deals. Watching for these announcements can help one get a general idea of what cushions normally cost and which sales are the best value.

Another option is to check a store’s clearance rack or section on a regular basis. Quite often, these sales will not be advertised.

Before buying patio cushions, whether on sale or at regular price, one should examine the quality of the material. It should be strong and made for outdoor use. Many cushions are machine washable or have covers that are, which can save a great deal of hassle when it comes to spills or other messes. Many cushions will be UV rated to stand up to the sun’s rays without fading. It is also a good idea to test the cushion by sitting on it, to make sure it is of a comfortable caliber.

New Sectional Garage Door Designs

Filed under Garages | No Comments

Each sectional garage door has WOW power. The new sectional garage door designs have been the revamped, reengineered and redesigned. With the new styles and colors, almost anything is possible. These are lighter in weight, more durable, made from more materials and more popular than ever before.

Today’s garage doors come in every color imaginable and almost every style a person could think of. The old fashion carriage house look is very popular; these resemble the wooden double doors with oversized hand-made hinges of the late 1800s that opened out from the center. Faux wood doors in natural wood colors and colonial panels in various colors are in demand. Many doors have windows for added accents. Having single sectional garage doors on a two or three car garage in the great new designs and colors add sparkle and curb appeal to a normally bland area.

Wood garage doors are still available but are not near as popular as the steel, aluminum and vinyl doors. The wooden doors require a lot of upkeep, are heavy and warp where the other materials are durable and long lasting with low-maintenance. The doors can double skinned and insulated or uninsulated. The insulation is foamed-in-place polyurethane for complete coverage.

These roll up on two tracks located on each side of the door and store overhead out of the way. These new sectional garage doors do not require any extra space to open as they just lift straight up. Most are equipped with an automatic garage door opener and can be opened and closed with the touch of a button. The torsion spring that operates the lift runs on electricity. A safety feature is the electronic light at the bottom that stops the movement of the door if the beam is broken by a person, child or pet moving through the garage opening.

A sectional garage door will work perfectly with anyone’s house colors and designs. It will add WOW power to the property.
