The Flexibility of a Shower Hose

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Have you ever wanted the flexibility of a shower hose, or hand held shower?  Fixed shower heads mean you have to stand under the flow of water and let it hit you whichever way it may. And sometimes, the height of the shower head may not be quite right for your height.

The Benefits

A shower hose will give you a comfortable, satisfying shower every time because you can point the flow of water any way you want. Enjoy the added water pressure when you put the hose near your sore body part for a massaging effect. And you can quickly and easily rinse the off soap from your body and hair.

Besides comfortable showers, there are a few more advantages to shower hoses. Showering little kids suddenly becomes easier; grab the hose to rinse off those little body parts in a hurry. Hoses are also great for bathing pets, which can make this dreaded task much easier.

Installation

A hand held shower is installed in the place where the hose attaches and can be used like a tradition shower head. You can adjust the hose at the clip to change the height according to your needs.

The Best Materials

When you buy a shower hose, it is best to look for brass or stainless steel. Nylon hoses tend to be stiffer. You want to make sure your hose is twist-free and adequately-sized. A good size for most showers is 60 inches but a longer hose will be needed for a person who sits while bathing or frequently washes their pets indoors.

Bore Holes

Another consideration is the size of the holes that the water comes out of, or the bore holes. Large holes are better for a low-pressure system while normal or small holes are recommended for a high-pressure system.  For more information on choosing the right product for your bathroom, head over to Shower Hose Guide, because such a small thing and make a huge difference in your bathroom

How to Find Cheap Outdoor Christmas Lights

Filed under Lighting | No Comments

Before buying outdoor Christmas lights, you are going to want to read these simple tips for getting the best deal on outdoor lighting.

The best deals in Christmas lights can be made in the sales just after Christmas, when stores try to get rid of this year’s stock. Discounts can be as great as 70 to 80% and if you are not too worried about buying the newest and trendiest lights each season, post-holiday sales are the best places to find cheap lights for the next holiday season.

Yard sales can also be good places to get affordable holiday decorations and outdoor lights. If you like shopping in yard sales, keep an eye out for holiday garden lights even if you are visiting a yard sale in the middle of the summer. You can often pick up surprisingly good deals when it is not the pre-Christmas season when everyone is looking for seasonal products.

Before purchasing the lights, measure the width and the height of the area in your house you want to decorate, and take measures from the bushes and trees in the garden. Decorative holiday lights come in strings and the amount of individual light bulbs on the string can range from around 25 up to as many as 200. A good measure for bushes and trees in the garden is approximately 50 bulbs for each foot of height, if using normal size bulbs. For miniature bulbs, you can easily use twice as much to get a good effect.

Always check that the lights conform to all the necessary safety standards, especially when buying on the Internet or when looking at second hand lights. Test your lights before hanging them up on the roof or in the garden to make sure all bulbs work. You can also use an online outdoor Christmas lights finder and browse through a few websites for best deals.

How to Put Rim Locks Back Together

Filed under Safety | No Comments

If you are ever in the awkward situation of taking an old Victorian brass rim lock, or a lock from any other period for that matter, off your door and then not being able to properly piece it back together again, rest assured that you are not the only one that has happened to.  It can be very frustrating to finally manage to get a rim lock off only to find when it is time to put it back together again that you cannot remember how to do so.

To begin with, it is often a feat in itself to get to a rim lock that has been painted over for centuries. The screws are usually totally covered with paint, paint remover seldom helps if there are multiple layers of paint and then once you finally have scraped the paint of you may well find that the screws are smaller and you do not have a screwdriver that fits.  If you manage to make it through all of these obstacles without damaging either the door or the lock, you are doing well!

But what to do if you simply cannot remember how to put the lock back together again?  Well, unless you are able to find detailed how-to instructions online, complete with illustrations, that you can follow you may need to revert to some other solution.  If you  have similar locks on other doors you could always very carefully take the other rim lock off as well, only this time making careful notes as to how the rim lock is put together. Follow the same pattern, and you should have your rim lock back together again in no time.  If you do not have any other similar locks, or if you are apprehensive about taking out yet another rim lock, the simplest solution is probably to take the lock to your local locksmith. They should be able to have it back together again in no time, and it is unlikely that they would charge you very much for it.

If all else fails, you could also look for a replacement rim lock, either an original or a replica model, and purchase that instead.  It would probably be cheaper to have the lock put back together by a locksmith, of course, but if you feel it is time for a new lock then that is also a viable option.

What’s Great About An Antique Secretary Desk

Filed under Furniture | No Comments

There are lots of things to love about antique furniture, the craftsmanship, the look of the piece, and of course, the enjoyment of the hunt! I’ve loved antique furniture for years, but early on I found out that much of it lacked any utility-it was great to look at, but about as useful as tits on a bull. After years of collecting, here are the top 3 most functional pieces of Antique furniture I’ve found.

One of my favorite pieces was a wooden secretary desk that I now use as a computer hutch. The great thing about these desks is that the writing surface folds up and away, and can lock up as well. If you combine the desk with a flat panel monitor and small form-factor PC, you have a really amazing computer hutch that can be locked up when the work is over.

After the secretary desk, my next favorite is a grandfather clock. The mechanical clockwork in an old grandfather clock is really an art work, and obviously its something that you’ll use every day  to tell time. Beyond that, the clock is a very enjoyable piece because you interact with it on a weekly basis as you wind and set it.

Lastly, I can’t forget about my wooden file cabinets. I bought them for a song 3 years ago, spent a small amount of time refinishing them and now they are a perfect compliment to my secretary desk. File sizes haven’t changed since these were made in the 1940′s, and after I replaced the lock they are as functional as any modern set. When you look at the price of metal cabinets, the value here is a no-brainer, and for some reason these wooden file cabinets seem to be very, very rare. Check the local flea-markets before people catch on to how retro-cool they are!

How to Install White Tiles in Your Bathroom

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

Making home repairs, if done correctly, can save anyone expenses of using contractors for a building project. When redesigning a bathroom, using white tiles can make any bathroom easy to clean and look a little brighter. However, there are a few simple steps to follow that will make this job go as fast as possible and get done correctly in a timely fashion.

The first thing to remember when doing any home repair is never rush a job. Follow each step correctly because redoing work will cost time and money in materials. When putting up new walls in a bathroom, first remove the old wall. After the old tile is removed, check for any mold or water damage to the drywall. If there is any damage to the drywall, it will also need replacing.

Of course while removing the wall, be sure to get rid of all old materials completely before moving on. Then measure the area to see how much white tile will be needed to complete the job. Once the wall is removed and dry wall is up, put a guiding strip of tile on the lowest level of the wall to help plan where tiles will be placed. Make sure that the entire area is dry or the adhesive will not stick to the wall.

After these steps are complete, cut out tiles that will become the edges to fit with the design perfectly. When putting up white marble tiles, the best tool to cut tiles without breaking them is a tile cutter. Make sure each row is securely fastened on the wall from side to side and from the bottom up. This will ensure that all tiles will fit together.

Once the tile is adhered to the walls, make sure to let the tile sit and dry in place for at least a day to prevent water damage to the drywall. It is also a good idea to caulk the edges of each tile to give them extra protection from water damage if possible. White tiles in a bathroom are easy to install if a person spends the proper amount of time on each of these steps.

What You Should Know About Corner Baths Showers

Filed under Bathrooms | No Comments

If you have a modern bathroom that is seriously lacking in floor space, the corner shower tub could be just the solution you are looking for. This type of shower tucks neatly into the corner of any small area and frees up more floor space in the middle of the room. There are some corner baths that have storage room for bathroom supplies and are actually quite large. These will work better in a bathroom that has a little more space. There are other models that are larger than a standard bathtub but their design lets them utilize space more efficiently and you still end up worth more floor space.

The two kinds of designs that are available are the recessed shower and the freestanding shower. The freestanding version has a platform that sits on the floor surface. With this style you get an added flair to the area immediately surrounding it. A recessed tub requires you to cut a hole through the floor to rest the unit in. These models will give you additional floor space but installation can be expensive because the process is complicated.

Materials

You will find that corner tubs are manufactured in a number of different styles and materials. Acrylic is the material most often used for these units. These tubs are affordable and lightweight in addition to being made in a wide variety of colors. Since installation is so simple they can usually be found at any home supply store in your area. You will need some basic skills related to plastering and plumbing, so you may still need some professional help with the installation process. This material is very easy to maintain and is extremely durable. The color will not fade and the surface will not scratch.

Choosing a Suitable Corner Tub

When you are searching for a tub, you will most likely want a shower as well so make sure that the unit you choose has a matching shower kit. In some cases these units are sold as a single set but there are others where you can mix and match styles if you choose.

Before you choose a corner tub make sure you have carefully measured the space that you have to work with. Make sure that the unit you choose does not overpower the entire room. You want there to be some space on the floor left over. Look for a tub and shower unit combined in one package if your space is severely limited.

LED Grow Lights: The Many Advantages

Filed under Garden | No Comments

Led grow lights are lights used to increase or promote the active growth of plants. They do this by emitting a light wave from the electromagnetic light spectrum that links up with a plants photosynthesis. Basically, these led lights are used to replace the sun that plants would usually get outdoors. LED lights are typically used in situations where indoor growth is needed, in a greenhouse, or for specialty growth where the amount of light needs to be regulated (an example of this would be a rose competition).

There are advantages to using an led light instead of direct sunlight. Sunlight provides a lot of heat, more heat than a led growth light would produce. The led lights will not scorch plants, and they will not evaporate too much moisture. Also, contrary to the sun, the user of an led light has control. They can give a plant as much light as they want and even vary the type of light that each plant gets.

Led lights also have advantages over other types of growing lights. These lights have a very long lifetime. The red bulb lights have a lifetime of 50,000 hours which is equivalent to 18 hours every day for more than seven years. LED’s save about 75 % of the electricity used when compared to hid lights. One of the other major advantages of led lights is they don’t put out near as much heat as compared to conventional lighting. This is why you will want to water a little less frequently since you won’t have the evaporation that your used too. LED’s also output the ideal light wave lengths that will make your growing the most productive you have ever seen. If you want to purchase an led light for your own use, you can easily find a large selection by using an LED grow lights finder on the internet.

The Benefits of Fireplace Tools

Filed under General Home | No Comments

There are numerous benefits to purchasing the proper fireplace tools to maintain and keep your fireplace. Along with enjoying a beautiful and warm ambiance that a fireplace has to offer comes the responsibility of keeping it a clean and safe environment for you and your family. It will benefit you to become familiar with the maintenance tools that can help extend the life of your fireplace. They are an invaluable aid to keeping your hearth running well and can save you from expensive repairs due to lack of maintenance and care. The following are some examples of various tools you can purchase to maintain your hearth in perfect condition and to enjoy your fireside activities for years to come.

Fire tools can be purchased separately or in sets. Most sets will include the basic tools that most all fireplace owners should possess as well as some additional ones specified by the dealer or chosen by the consumer. One such basic tool is the poker. As the name implies, this tool is used to poke the fire or rearrange wood pieces to help keep it burning properly. The firedog or andiron is a metal piece that is kept in the hearth for the wood to sit on which will elevate the fire off the hearth floor. Again this aids in keeping fires burning longer and better.

Another indispensible tool is the tong – large metal sticks used to grab and hold burning pieces of wood or logs. If you need to adjust the wood while it is burning or add additional wood, this tool serves that purpose. Last but not least, to help clean the remains of a fire and collect the ashes, a broom or shovel is used. These tools collectively are a great aid to keeping and maintaining your fireplace in good shape. You can view further details for each of these products plus many more fireplace accessories online or you can browse at a local dealer near you.

How to Buy King Waterbed Sheets

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

King waterbed sheets have a few features that make them different from normal bed sheets. Although it is possible to use regular sheets for some waterbeds, most waterbed mattresses are longer than normal mattresses and special sheet sets are required.

Waterbed sheets generally have added “pockets” to make sure they stay in place. The fitted (bottom) sheet is often attached to the top sheet, which helps to keep the sheets in place at night as you move around the bed in your sleep.

The most popular material for sheets is cotton. Cotton synthetic blends have become more common because they are cheaper than 100% cotton and easier to maintain. When buying cotton sheets, the main feature to look at is the thread count. The higher the count, the softer and smoother the material is and the more comfortable it will feel. Around 250 is a good minimum count for everyday sheets, and the higher you go the better the quality will be and the softer it will feel to the skin. Egyptian cotton is one of the highest quality cottons available and is also more expensive than other types.

Many waterbed owners also swear by silk sheets. Although silk is often considered a luxury material and too expensive for everyday use, it is very durable and long lasting, and can work out to be more cost effective than the cheaper materials. Silk feels very smooth to the touch and keeps you warm in colder weather and cool in the hot summer weather. If you decide to invest in silk sheets, the thread count is again a good indicator of quality.

There is a wide variety of sheet sets available so it is a good idea to do some research before buying. Have a look online and use a waterbed sheets finder to choose the perfect material, size and color for your room.

Your Guide to Luxury Bedding

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

When it comes to interior design, no place in the house should be more suited to your tastes than the bedroom. If you are looking for a simple way to really posh up the room, consider implementing some luxury bedding. Obviously, the bed is the focus of any bedroom, and draping it in the finest sheets and covers can make a dramatic impression.

Changing the look of the room can be as simple as changing the sheets. However, when you are considering investing in luxury sheets the details on the packaging can become very confusing. What is the difference between satin and sateen? What is a thread count and why does it matter? Knowing what you are doing can simplify the purchase, whether you are purchasing luxury bedding online or from your favorite retailer.

There are several types of materials that luxury sheets are usually made of. Slipping into satin sheets is the first thought for many when it comes to luxury bedding. Be careful when purchasing these, because many times they are made from knit acetate. This gives the fabric a nice sheen, but does not make it appealing in the tactile sense.

Satin sheets can be made from nylon, polyester, or silk. While silk is the most expensive and possibly the most comfortable, this fabric is not very durable. Many prefer satin made from polyester as it is easier to care for. However, satin sheets may feel great on your skin initially, but in the warmer months they can get quite uncomfortable. Down is also a great material for bedding, although it is usually reserved for comforters and pillows. Down can also become quite hot in the warmer months, so consider your climate.

When you choose what type of bedding you want for your home, you should always put comfort first. The sheets you use could mean the difference between tossing and turning and a good night’s sleep.

Filed under Lighting | No Comments

A well lit garden or gazebo for late afternoon tea or an event at night would give a different kind of feel to your garden. You can also choose different styles to choose from like Asian, tropical, Victorian, old-world, art-deco, country, contemporary, traditional, rustic or lodge. Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Area Rugs

Filed under Rugs | No Comments

Accent rugs can be beautiful accessories to add to any household to improve, modify, accentuate or complement your home décor. In order for your rug to stay in a high quality and attractive state it is important to learn how to properly care for and maintain your product.

The following are tips on how to care for a few types of accent rugs to ensure long lasting wear.

To protect a Persian rug or carpet from fading from over exposure to the sun, rotate its location or block the sun from entering the room by placing shades or curtains on the windows. By the same token you can protect it from wear and tear by rotating its location from a heavy traffic spot to a lesser traveled one in your home. By using a good quality pad you can prevent curling or wrinkling of your area rugs due to their moving around so much. By spraying your carpet twice a year front and back with moth spray you can protect it from moths. Moth spray can easily be found in any carpet store. To remove dirt and debris sweeping is a better method than vacuuming as vacuuming, if not done properly, can cause damage to the rug. Professional carpet cleaners are also available for a deep cleaning job.

Wool rugs are fairly easy to maintain and clean as they are more resistant to dirt and are very durable. The best maintenance involves sweeping and vacuuming regularly, to get rid of dirt and dust before it has a chance to accumulate. Once a month you can take the carpet outside, hang it over a clothesline and beat it with a rug beater to get rid of ground in dirt. Then every six months or so you can steam clean your wool rug by either renting a steam cleaner and doing it yourself, or hiring a professional carpet cleaning company. You can find professional cleaners of floor rugs online.

Gothic Style vs. Country Style Oak Bedroom Furniture

Filed under Bedding, Furniture | No Comments

When you go shopping for oak bedroom furniture, which type do you like: the gothic style or the country style? The gothic style offers plenty of Old World sophistication, especially with the classic favorites like the Victorian sub-style and Queen Anne sub-style. On the other hand, the country style has its strong points, with its strong clean lines.

However, selecting the style of oak furniture is not just about your taste. These two major schools of furniture style have some very special properties when placed into your bedroom, properties which are not obvious in the showroom. Gothic-styled bedroom furniture tends to give a heavier feeling, especially the massive and ponderous Victorian-type furniture. This weightiness has the tendency to make a room feel small and cramped. It might even make you feel small, if your ego is not strong enough. The more graceful, arching lines of Queen Anne-type furniture is not nearly so weighty, but can still have a noticeable effect if you buy it in dark colors.

Gothic-style oak bedroom furniture sets are best bought for large bedrooms. Because they make the empty spaces seem smaller, they can make an over-large bedroom feel more cosy. This is the opposite effect of country-styled furniture. The country style and its major variations, the rustic and Mission styles, prize simplicity. The original country style is the Mission style, and it was a reaction against the heavy and ornate Victorian-style furniture that was its immediate predecessor. It eschewed the complex moldings and ostentatious carvings that were common, instead preferring to leave large surfaces in their original condition, with only clean lines along the edges used for decoration.

If you are buying beds and wardrobes made from the highest grade oak wood, you may want to choose unpainted (i.e. finished with wax or clear varnish) country-style furniture. The large expanses of “plain” wood show off the fine grains of the high quality quarter-sawn oak boards beautifully. If you have a larger bedroom, you may want something with a darker stain. If you have a smaller, cramped bedroom, get unstained white oak to make your bedroom feel more spacious.

With modern precision manufacturing processes, it costs the factory pretty much the same amount of money to make both styles of furniture. When you buy from furniture stores, how much you pay depends on the brand. You can get both styles. However, if you get your oak furniture custom-made, you can only get it in the country style. Not many furniture craftsmen have enough skill to hand make the complex carvings that characterize the gothic-styled beds and wardrobes.

Oak furniture does not come cheap. Properly cared for, it can last you a lifetime. Make sure you choose the right style for you as well as your bedroom.

Even the most cared-for pets can get fleas at any point. These small blood-sucking insects give harm to any warm-blooded animal, as well as inconvenience and health hazards to pet owners. These fleas may easily transmit various diseases to people, especially children, who like to cuddle or hold pets.

Affected animals may have dermatitis, anemia, or tapeworm. Also, experts say that the transmitted diseases to humans include the serious murine typhus from a flea’s waste, or bubonic plague (admittedly rare now) from a flea’s bite. Meanwhile, if fleas are accidentally swallowed by a human or other animal, existing tapeworm eggs in them can be passed on. Thus, rubber gloves must be used when handling any pet with fleas, and hands must be thoroughly washed after.

To get rid of fleas in the home, there are effective products in the market. There are the flea bombs, which are insecticides that go off like ‘bombs’. One of such should be strategically placed in an area where the fleas are, usually on a carpet, on sofas, etc. These bombs eliminate larvae and flea eggs. These are to be used only when a treated area is evacuated by humans as well as pets. More so, all food-related surfaces must be covered entirely while treatment is in progress, and then fully washed before using them again.

Another option is a flea collar to prevent fleas on your pet rather than the environment as above. It is actually a collar which works two ways: through letting out a flea-toxic gas, or by absorption into the pet’s internal fat layer. This gas is generally effective only within the areas of the neck and head. On one hand, the absorption way is more effective since it goes down into the pores. This treatment type is ideal for preventive measures; before fleas actually set in.

One more way is through a flea shampoo. It kills adult fleas, and also washes away larvae and flea wastes on the pet’s body. Using this is very easy; just the usual bathing process. The shampoo should be left for a minimum of ten minutes before rinsing.

The type of treatment will depend on the severity of fleas, and on the pet owners’ respective discretion. Before buying any, research should be carried out so that the chosen treatment will be effective. A flea-free pet is a healthy and happy pet and that goes for the owner too.

Planning a New Bathroom Remodeling Project

Filed under Bathrooms, Renovations | No Comments

Bathroom remodeling and renovation will not only enhance the enjoyment of your home, but will also enhance your home’s value when you plan to sell. Bathroom renovation is often considered the best way to get a good return on investment. Homeowners can take pleasure in their bathroom from the time they renovate until the time they choose to sell the house. The following outlines some useful steps in the process of renovating the bathroom

Measuring:

In preparing the design of the renovation project, be sure to make appropriate measurements and then form a map or plan with which to work with. Mark the position of any pipes and mark the position of fixtures and fittings. This will allow you to make accurate layout plans. The secret to a great bathroom design is good initial planning and this process will allow you to map out exactly where you want your fixtures and accessories to be.

Function followed by form:

It is essential when designing the bathroom to put function above form. It does not matter how beautiful your bathroom is, if you have abad design that makes your bathroom difficult or uncomfortable to use, you will not enjoy it. Most bathrooms are small, so if the function is not carefully considered it can sometimes make the room virtually unusable. In your  design process, you need to reflect on what functions you want the bathroom to meet and work towards this goal.

Plumbing fixtures:

Make sure you know exactly where to place the fixtures and fittings when you plan your bathroom remodel. Your toilet, sink and tub will normally remain in exactly the same position they are in now, unless you can move the plumbing. Moving the plumbing could add considerable expense to your project and will require you to employ the services of a professional. I would advise not to undertake any plumbing yourself unless you are very experienced. Water leaks can be very costly and damaging.

Consider your budget

The scale of the bathroom remodeling project will largely depend on the budget you have. If you find you have a lot of money to renovate your bathroom, you can design your bathroom from scratch. However, you can always renew your bathroom, even on a small budget by replacing some of the decorative features such as bathroom furniture, accessories and light fixtures.

How Long Should I Keep a Feather Pillow?

Filed under Bedding | No Comments

Feather pillows can last for at least five or six years if you take care of them properly. Contrary to popular belief, it is really not that hard to protect and clean your feather pillows to ensure they will provide many years of comfort. Here are a few guidelines for protecting and cleaning your feather pillows so they will last as long as possible.

The longevity of a feather pillow will in part depend upon what type of feathers it is stuffed with. A pillow filled with all down will last longer that one with regular duck, goose or chicken feathers. Down feathers are actually shaped like round clusters that are easily fluffed back up into their original shape. Regular feathers tend to lie flat after a while and eventually will not provide a lot of comfort. So, even though down feather pillows are more expensive, you will get your money’s worth in the long run since they will last longer.

To promote longevity, use both a pillow protector and a pillowcase over your feather pillow. This will help keep the natural oils from your skin away from the pillow. And, since the pillow will not get as dirty, you will not need to wash it as often to keep it clean. Wash your feather pillows on the gentle cycle using a front loading machine, if possible. Don’t use too much laundry detergent and if you have time, run them through the rinse cycle a couple times. Make sure that you dry the pillows thoroughly, to avoid any build up of mildew.

A daily fluffing of your pillows will also help them to retain their loft over the years. You could also throw them in the dryer for a few minutes during any humid times of the year to freshen them up and remove any excess moisture. Follow these tips and the manufacturers cleaning guidelines and your feather pillows should last you a long time.

Fireplace Maintenance With a Chimney Liner and Brush

Filed under General Home | No Comments

Having a fireplace can be a great thing. Nothing beats curling up in front of a crackling fire on a cold winter’s night. Once you stock up on logs, you probably figure you are all set for a winter full of cozy fires, right? In reality, that is only partly true. It takes a lot more than a few reams of fire wood to keep the fireplace going all winter.

Fireplaces don’t come with instructions. Not many people talk about fireplace maintenance but ignoring the matter can result in serious consequences. A lot of people buy older houses that already have fireplaces, stock up on wood, and don’t give the matter another thought. However, maintaining the fireplace is absolutely critical if you want to ensure its longevity as well as the safety of your family and home.

The first thing you should do before starting to use the fireplace is get it inspected. Only an expert has the right tools to examine the inner workings of your chimney and ensure that everything is in full working order. Inspectors know exactly what to look for and can make recommendations about how to improve the functionality and safety of your fireplace. Even if the home was inspected during the sales process, it is a good idea to have a specific chimney inspector come out and take a look.

Even if your fireplace does pass its inspection with flying colors, your job is not done. If you use the fireplace regularly, it is up to you to take the steps necessary to keep your fireplace in good shape. That means cleaning the fireplace doors and cleaning up the ash regularly. Always wait a few days after burning a fire to clean up the ash to ensure that it has cooled entirely.

It is also a good idea to clean your liner every year using a steel brush. Although you can do this yourself, it involves purchasing the proper tools and going on the roof, so most people prefer to enlist the help of a professional chimney cleaner. Professional cleaners usually have a large collection of chimney sweep brushes which means there is a good chance they will have one that is the exact size and shape to clean your liner thoroughly without damaging it.

A chimney liner is not something you want to install and then forget about. Neglecting it can hurt your home and even your family. Maintenance is imperative to keeping your chimney in good, safe working order.

Home Safety Device: Wireless Motion Sensor Alarm

Filed under Safety | No Comments

A cost-effective way of safeguarding your home from theft is through a wireless motion sensor alarm. This simple surveillance equipment can detect movement around a designated radius, and set off signals to alert the homeowner. It is a good way of monitoring the safety of your house during the evenings. The sound each unit emits can rouse you from your sleep and give you enough time to take action when a burglar is afoot. You can use this in conjunction with an affordable in-house camera monitor so you get to have a look at the perpetrator before he or she enters your room.

The basic model comes with motion detecting sensors that can sense movement in a set area, and alarm settings with volume controls that can go up to 120 decibels. Other units have infrared features that allow you to indicate the sensor’s scope or coverage. For single, working people without pets who live alone (and are often out of the house), there are models with telephony features that automatically dial a pre-inputted number once it detects unauthorized activity within the area. It alerts the homeowner of the presence of intruders, even when they are out of the city. All they have to do is enter their mobile number. Some units allow up to 3 numbers to be entered. It could be your mobile number, your neighbor’s land line and the local police’s direct line. Once the auto-dialler contacts a designated number, it plays a pre-recorded message of your choosing (e.g., “This is Jane Smith, an intruder has entered my home at 123 ABC Street, DEF Village, GHI City.”).

Depending on the brand, make, and features, prices may vary from fourteen dollars to under four hundred dollars. For instance, a wireless motion sensor alarm with an automatic dialer can cost about thirty dollars.

Choosing Concrete Anchor Bolts

Filed under Renovations | No Comments

Anchors need to be used in many different types of construction, and the concrete anchor bolt plays a vital part in the integrity of the building.

While this type of hardware can be found in commercial office buildings made of concrete, they are also common in residential uses for anchoring foundation to the framing plates, footers, or directly to a slab. Various types of bolts will be used depending on whether the application is static, dynamic, or will experience frequent or constant vibration.

The installation methods depend on the types of bolts and what they are used for. The most difficult to install, but the strongest, are cast-in-place bolts. These bolts need to be poured on the spot they are used, directly into the concrete, creating an incredibly strong bond. However, this is not very practical for every location, so a wider variety is needed.

Wedge bolts are a hefty alternative. These bolts are designed for heavy loads, and use a machine threaded bolt which expands the anchor as it sinks in. These anchors are low profile for flush mounting. These are inserted into the concrete by drilling holes of the same diameter as the threaded bolt, and then driving the hardware in.

As it is tightened, the action of the nut tightening against the washer causes the pronged end of the shaft to expand and wedge tightly against the inside of the hole. Every wedge has a minimum length it needs to be embedded in order for it to function at its maximum strength; driving the wedge anchor deeper will make it even stronger.

For practical reasons, namely that of building integrity, concrete anchor bolts are coated in rust resistant zinc alloy, and some are even treated to a ‘hot-dipped’ galvanizing process for extra protection. The last thing a contractor wants is for structural problems to occur due to rusting bolts.
