Tips for Treating Brown Patch Disease

Filed under Appliances, Garden | No Comments

Brown patch is a fungal disease that can affect several types of lawns. Here are some tips for treating brown patch.

The disease starts with small unattractive patches, and can quickly spread to larger areas. As the fungus spreads, it can form a large circle. Sometimes the inside areas of the circle can recover and turn green, while the outside part of the ring stays yellow and looks wilted. This disease spreads easily in humid weather and affects different types of grass, including Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine, Bentgrass, Centipede and some type of ryegrass. It is most common during the spring and the fall, when the climate is humid and night temperatures can be cool.

An easy way to prevent and treat this fungus is to water your garden early in the morning and then leave it, so that the morning dew escapes and moisture is reduced. When mowing a lawn that has been affected by fungus, always get rid of all the clippings so that the disease will not spread. Choose the correct fertilizer to your lawn and to your soil type, and make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You may have to use a fungicide to get rid of brown patch. Some of the most commonly used are chlorothalonil and benomyl.

One way of preventing the disease is to plant your garden shrubs and trees far apart from each other, so that there are no areas where too much shade and moisture can create breeding grounds for fungal diseases. Make sure that all parts of the garden get some sunlight and if you find that the lawn is infected, you can try cutting some of the foliage to let more light through.

Always ask for professional advice before buying fungicides and make sure you choose the right products for each lawn type.

A Cordless Knife For Turkey Carving

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

A cordless knife is something I should have bought in the first place. Now, where do I start? Have you ever had the experience of throwing a party, hosting a big family reunion, or just a small get together where everything was going fine and smoothly then suddenly you had a big bad feeling that something was going to go terribly wrong and ruin the whole thing? I have.

Right after I married my wife, which was last year, we went out to buy appliances for our kitchen. My wife wanted a set of knives which came with a wooden block, but then I spotted an electric knife. Remembering my mom having one and knowing how helpful it was, I wanted that one for myself. I also saw a beautiful cordless carving knife, but it was not within my budget so I settled for the standard one, the one with the cord.

The price of the set of knives with the wooden block made my wife agree with my proposal to settle on the cordless knife along with the promise that we would be returning it if in a week she ended up hating it. But she loved it. We used it for a year, it was suited for our needs, as our kitchen was small and rarely did we have guests. We did all our preparing and cooking in our small kitchen.

All was well until one time we decided to have a small get together, inviting my wife’s siblings and parents over. We prepared ham and turkey. We were happy to see everybody’s delight over the served appetizers and soup. Then when it was time for the main course, I proudly brought my electric knife over; ready to carve the big ham and turkey. Suddenly, I realized that there was no outlet in the dinning room. To make matters worse, we did not have any regular knives also but table knives which were blunt.

We were so embarrassed; my wife had to explain that we did not have regular knives. In short, I felt that it would mean that I was too cheap to buy any. I took the ham and the turkey back to the kitchen to cut it all up. Upon returning, the mood had already changed. The embarrassing incident ruined the party. This taught me that the cordless knife would have been the wisest thing to buy, if I had one it would have saved me from all the shame.

Could You Use A Mini Refigerator?

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

Whatever your situation, a mini refrigerator is a great appliance to have. Whether you are a college student who needs to keep a few cold drinks nearby for study sessions, or a senior who likes to keep snacks and beverages available to avoid getting up numerous times, especially for a medical or dietary reason. A camper can keep some food stuff available for the requisite bacon and egg breakfast, and the construction worker or other service provider will no doubt enjoy having a ready place to keep meals cool until they are ready for the long awaited break.

A mini fridge is a great appliance to have for many reasons. Offering great convenience for a small investment, they are showing up everywhere, and with good reason.

Not only handy for the college student, they also provide a cool place for campers, in a garage or shed, and also in a basement or spare room. They give a bit of privacy when visitors come to your home and allow for them to keep a cool drink or snack in the room they will be using, and you will look like the perfect host for anticipating and considering what your guests may need.

Different appliance manufacturers make mini fridges, so you can choose from the Avanti mini fridge, Magic Chef mini fridge and Igloo mini fridge amongst others. Many websites are available to research your purchase, and it is always a good idea to look at different options available so that you know what will best suit your needs.

When speaking with a salesman, you will want to discuss the size and space needed for your fridge, as well as how you will be using it. In a dorm room you may want to use it daily, whereas a camper may need to use it only during certain months. Naturally, access to a power source is required.

When selecting your mini fridge, you will have choices not only in the size and capacity it will hold, but you may also have a color selection to make. Depending on the investment you wish to make, quality of your fridge may vary. You may spend less then a hundred dollars, and can expect to pay several hundred if upgraded features are desired.

These small size appliances are available to purchase at different retail outlets, including appliance stores, department stores and big box stores. You may also find just what you need on the internet. As they are compact in size, you should be able to purchase and carry out on the same day. The Health Benefits of an Orange Juicer

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

An orange juicer can turn a common breakfast drink into a real health asset. Citrus fruits contain substances called bioflavonoids. These nutrients are essential for helping the body absorb vitamin C. Bioflavonoids have been linked to prevention of many conditions, including asthma attacks and heart disease. Many over-the-counter supplements use them as additives to increase their effectiveness. Well a pill isn’t necessary to get all these benefits. All that’s necessary is the right type of orange juice.

It is clearly best to get our nutritional requirements from the foods we eat and drink. All that is necessary to include these precious bioflavonoids in our diets is to consume healthful citrus fruit juices. That is exactly what an orange juicer machine can provide to your household on a daily basis. Frozen concentrates seem to contain mostly the pulp of the orange. Bioflavonoids and other good nutrients are actually contained in the white membranes and the inside of the peel. Often these nutritionally beneficial parts are discarded. Making the drinks at home allows more of the whole fruit to be used.

Do not use the entire peel of the fruit, because it has a bitter taste. However, the peel itself is only a small part of the overall fruit. There is a thick layer of what is known as pith under the peel itself. With the right machine, it is easy to use the pith without adding the actual peel to your beverage. This white substance has almost no taste at all, and yet it is full of bioflavonoids. It will hardly even be noticeable, yet the beverage will have all the benefits of a whole orange.

Making breakfast drinks from scratch is not as difficult as it might seem. Using the newer juicing appliances, it’s even easier than mixing up a batch from frozen concentrate. It provides a much more attractive result, too. Imagine the difference between serving a watery, reconstituted concoction and presenting a glass of cold, fresh, whole juice. It is easy to see which one is more appealing.

The Hamilton Beach Toastation 22708H 2 Slice Toaster Oven

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

The Hamilton beach toastation is about the cheapest possible toaster oven we can get, especially if we want good quality.

If you read a number of toaster oven reviews you will see that it is one model that is well respected. This is definitely one of the best possible choices if we want to spend a minimal amount of money but still get a great model.

We can easily toast bagels or toast and the oven is large enough for us to do small pizzas and items like nuggets etc. We will find that it is small enough to be fairly inconspicuous on the counter top and it will not take up all the room. There is no doubt this is a great little model for those who want a handy way to quickly prepare small amounts of food with out using the main oven.

We should see some fairly large savings on costs as we will be using less than half the power our main oven consumes. It is also simply much easier and quicker of we have a counter top oven for quickly heating or cooking items.

The toastation is a great purchase and you will actually find that it is about as cheap to purchase as a simple toaster that does not have all of these extra benefits. It is now a very popular choice and is certainly well worth thinking about buying if you want something small and convenient at a fantastic price.

A Toast To Love

More and more people are finding items like this really free up their time in the kitchen as it makes life that little bit easier. We should certainly see a dramatic cut in the costs of our electric bills if nothing else and this is just another incentive to use one when we can.

Advantages of Masticating Juicers

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

If you are interested in buying a juicer machine so that you can make healthy juices at home, you may have heard of masticating juicers. Masticating simply means to chew, and it gives a clue to how these machines work – instead of using fast spinning blades to shred everything up, they use slowly revolving gears or augers to crush the liquid out of your fruits and vegetables.

There are some significant advantages to the masticating juicer system.

Slower speed means no air gets mixed in to the juice. This reduces deterioration when the juice reacts with oxygen in air. Also, you don’t get that layer of gray froth that you see on juice made with regular, high speed machines

Unlike high speed machines, no heat is generated when the juice is extracted. In a regular high speed juicer, the blades can spin at up to 5000RPM – the heat resulting can sterilize the juice it touches, resulting in lower vitamin and enzyme levels.

You can juice harder, tougher ingredients such as wheat grass and herbs. Regular high speed juicers cannot process wheat grass because it is too stringy, but the slow crushing action of masticating juicers is ideal for this.

More liquid is actually extracted with the slow juicing method. The great force generated by the slow action of the gears means that you are left with very dry pulp – a good indication that a high percentage of juice has successfully been extracted.

So are there downsides to a masticating juicer? Yes there are. They are slower at making juice, and they are more expensive. If you have a very busy schedule then you may be better off with a high speed juicer instead. Making a batch of about 6 glasses of juice (including cleanup) will take about 30 minutes with a masticating juicer, and about 15-20 minutes with a fast juicer like the Jack Lalanne Power juicer or the Breville Juice fountain.

In terms of price, you can expect to pay at least half as much again for a masticating juicer of similar quality and size to a normal centrifugal machine.

Despite these two factors, many people still prefer these slower juicers. The fact that you get better juice, greater versatility, and higher juice extraction are generally enough to outweigh the higher cost and extra time you put in.

How to Choose an Electric Meat Grinder

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

Buying a machine to grind your own meat is a great idea these days with all the food scares around. You can control what goes into your food and create some great recipes too. An electric meat grinder takes all the hard work out of grinding and means you will be able to process a large joint of meat and grind it in minutes. There are quite a few of these machines on market, however, so you may be wondering which one to choose for the best. Here are some guidelines to get the best possible appliance for you.

1. Motor

Unless you are going to process huge quantities of meat, get a machine with a motor around 300 to 500 watts. That will have the best balance between cost and speed but will still process around 3lbs of meat a minute.

2. Metal Parts

It is fine for the body of the machine to be made of strong plastic but the internal workings need to be made of tough metal. Carbon steel or steel blades are best although you need to look after them so they do not rust. Stainless steel is OK too and is less prone to rust but the cutting edges go blunt more quickly.

3. Functionality

Look for a machine which has plates to produce fine and coarse ground meat and one which has funnels from producing sausages as this will give you the most functionality when it comes to using your machine.

4. Add-on or Stand Alone?

If you have a KitchenAid or Cusinart mixer you can buy an attachment which will grind meat instead of having to buy a separate appliance. This saves money and storage space. Both the Cusinart and KitchenAid meat grinder will also grind and puree other foods so this makes them especially useful but it is probably best to buy a stand alone meat grinder if you are going to process a lot of meat, such as a whole animal for the freezer.

All About Space Heaters: Propane, Kerosene and Halogen Heaters

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

A space heater is an appliance that warms a small area. They are often called portable heaters, room heaters, or axillary heaters. Space heaters are often used to save energy and money on heating costs. When using them, it is more cost effective to turn down the central heating system and use the space heater as a supplement. The most common types of space heaters are heated by halogen, electric, propane and kerosene.

Halogen heaters use light from a halogen light bulb to produce heat. These units are compact, lightweight, and easy to use. They are high in efficiency and cleanliness.

Electric heaters usually have ceramic heating elements and use fan forced blowers to distribute heat. They heat evenly and are among the most common and cheapest of space heaters.

Propane heaters and kerosene heaters produce a lot of heat. Most popular propane heaters have a low-oxygen shut off valve. Likewise, many newer kerosene heaters have a tip over switch. Because of open flames and chance of carbon-monoxide poisoning, both propane and kerosene heaters are best used outdoors or in an area with good ventilation.

There are several common sense safety tips to consider when operating a space heater in your home. If placed too closely to fabrics or furniture, the heaters may cause a fire hazard. They can also cause burns to skin or clothing. If there is an issue with fuses blowing or breakers tripping it may be the result of overloaded electrical circuits and you may need to consult an electrician. Always check the safety manual for the specific heater purchased.

Space heaters can be purchased at the neighborhood hardware store, at big box stores, or at online retailers. They are convenient, portable, and reasonably priced. All in all, space heaters give you a great bang for your buck!

Freezers of Small Refrigerators

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

When it comes to cheap small refrigerators, there usually isn’t much in the way of freezer capacity. Most units offer very small freezer compartments that are barely enough to make a tray of ice. But if freezer capacity is something you are taking more seriously then there are some things to know when shopping for a small refrigerator. Almost any standard small refrigerator will come with a little bit of freezing space but it does largely depend on the size of the unit.

For those with very specific freezer needs there is an option that allows the compact size and versatility of a small refrigerator that doesn’t compromise the freezer space. These are dual-function freezer-refrigerators that are all of one or the other. This means that the entire unit can be set to freezer mode or to refrigerator mode but can only do one mode at a time. For those who will use their refrigerator sparingly and have another appliance for their refrigerator needs this could make a lot of sense.

Most cheap small refrigerators such as the compact cube or mini fridge come with half width and full width freezer compartments respectfully. Half width means that the freezer space is one quarter the width of the interior of the refrigerator and fully width means that it stretches the entire top of the refrigerator. The freezer inside a compact cube truly is only good for an ice tray while you could get away with a little more in a full width freezer. It is typically good for flat items such as left over pizza slices or slabs of meat. Although the limited coolness factor makes it less than ideal for keeping meats especially if you are more particular about being safe.

Choosing a top mounted freezer in larger units that offer a separated freezer compartment is a good idea since it helps prevent wasted energy consumption. Those who need more than the half or full width freezer might consider a larger refrigerator that comes with a separate freezer compartment.

Discover The Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

Coffee lovers all agree that grinding coffee beans yourself is essential to making the perfect cup. And given the choice between a blade or a burr grinder, the burr coffee grinder wins as the superior bean grinding machine.

A burr grinder operates using a wheel that moves along a stationery surface, allowing for a more consistent grind of the fresh beans. There are two types of burr coffee grinders depending upon your budget.

The more economical of the two is a wheel burr grinder which features a burr wheel that rotates very quickly and generates a lot more noise. The conical burr coffee grinder is the more expensive model, but the one preferred by purists as it spins much more quietly and slowly than a blade model which means it creates a lot less mess. The conical grinder is also less likely to get clogged if you are using flavored or more oily beans.

One of the joys of owning a burr coffee grinder is that this style allows you to have exceptional control over the final ground coffee which is not possible with a blade grinder. Blade grinders use food quality metal blades that tend to chop up the coffee beans rather than truly grind them so you cannot control the fineness of the final product. Because the wheel spins so quickly on a blade grinder, coffee bean taste can be adversely affected when the final product is burnt by the heat generated due to the high speed action.

When selecting a burr coffee grinder, check the machine for special features, such as a 300 watt motor which will burn out less frequently, controls which allow for a variety of ground fineness levels, a hopper that can hold at least 4 ounces of beans, an automatic shut-off feature and a collection cannister for depositing the ground beans. Each of these features adds to the joy of using and enjoying a burr coffee grinder.

Good Air Filtration Systems Are The Start for Healthy Living

Filed under Appliances, Ventilation | No Comments

Have you ever considered how important air filtration is to your health? Clean air goes way beyond what you can see in the air. Particles many times smaller than a human hair float around in our homes and we breathe these in. Most of the larger particles get trapped in our nasal passages and throats, but a significant portion can make it all the way into our lungs. These particles can do damage to the lungs and cause allergic reasons that you are well aware of, such as COPD and asthma.

Clean air is actually easy to come by in the home and it starts with good filtration techniques. When I refer to good filtration, I mean at least a HEPA filter. HEPA is a designation for a type of filter efficiency. HEPA rated filters will remove particles down to a .3 micron size. These are much small than the width of a human hair and these small particles float around, unnoticed by the human eye.

Any good home air purifier will remove these particles. This is perhaps more important in the winter as the air is usually very dry and supports more particles flying around. In fact, if you want to reduce the load on your home air filter system, add humidity to the air during the dry winter months. Humid air will cause many particles to clump together and then be too large to float.

Good home air purifiers have become easy to find and there are many manufacturers that produce quality devices. The main thing you want to look for is a HEPA filter. Avoid the ones that actually think Ozone is good for you. Yes, certain manufacturers sell air purifiers that produce ozone, and since it smells good to most people, it makes them think it is “fresh” air. Ozone is not good for you to breathe.
Home air quality begins with good filtration.

Decorating A Cheap Bar Fridge

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

When it comes to bar fridges, there are fantastic looking ones, and then there are dull ones.  The difference is usually in the price tag.  Great looking mini bar fridges usually come with price tags of over $200, with some high units reaching into the thousands of dollars.  The higher priced models usually come with fancy features like glass doors or customizable doors that allow them to blend in completely with their surroundings.  For those of us who prefer not to spend a week or even a month’s wages on a small appliance, here are some ideas on how to get your cheap bar fridge either looking great or turning invisible.

By far the easiest way to get a cheap mini bar fridge looking great is to adorn it with some stickers.  I’m not talking about little kiddie stickers.  These days you can get some really great looking ones about anything you are interested in.  This might be your favorite type of beer (we are talking about things for the bar), a sports team, or even your favorite politician!  Since most people use their bars at night, if you get a sticker that glows in the dark, it will look great.  If you start with a black fridge, you won’t even really see it if it is dark and glowing.

As far as making the little appliance disappear completely, here are a couple of ideas.  First, you can stash it away in one of the cabinets, then open the door to access it.  This option only works if you get one small enough to fit inside the cupboard though!  Another idea is to use a piece of cloth to drape over it. If you put a nice colored piece of fabric right over a small bar fridge and then put a vase with flowers on top of that, people will just assume that it is a little table and not even notice it.  You can put it right up against one of your interior home columns in the basement and it will look like it supposed to be there.

It may actually be worthwhile to leave the work to the professionals even if you have the necessary experience. Getting Started With Coffee Pods

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

If you are a coffee lover with limited time on your hands, the coffee pod is a great option that allows you to get your fix without wasting valuable minutes in the morning. Coffee pods accomplish the seemingly impossible- providing rich, high-quality brews at the press of a button- in a convenient system that literally anyone can learn to use.

Coffee pods are a relatively new innovation, so many people may not be familiar with the term. A coffee pod is a pre-packaged amount of ground coffee beans contained within its own filter. The pod coffee system differs substantially from traditional brewing, and so the switch to pods may require you to purchase a coffee pod machine to replace your old coffee maker. Here we will provide you with the basic knowledge you need to start using coffee pods, including recommendations on pod coffee makers and brands.

The Senseo system, produced by Douwe Egberts and Philips and first introduced in the Netherlands, was the first popular pod coffee brewing device. After spreading across Europe, the machine arrived in the U.S. The Senseo is renowned for its sleek design and ease of use, making it one of the most prominent pod coffee makers available today.

The Senseo may be used with a variety of other brands whose pods are compatible with the maker. After a patent dispute in Belgium, other European brands were allowed to create their own lines of coffee pods for the Senseo system. While this was bad news for the Senseo parent companies, it has resulted in a wide array of choices for coffee loving consumers.

Senseo coffee pods include mild, dark, and decaffeinated roasts, as well as even more options that vary by country. Also available are flavors such as chocolate and espresso blended with traditional brews. From Wolfgang Puck and other gourmet brews to ubiquitous lines like Folgers and Javastone, the competition for coffee pods has increased dramatically.

Coffee lovers with more unusual tastes can also use coffee pods, as pod coffee makers are not limited to brewing standard morning roasts. In 2008, Senseo introduced another model, the Latte Select, which effortlessly creates café lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos.

While a large part of the increasing demands for coffee pods is linked to their ease of use, the consistency of their results has also enticed coffee and espresso lovers to switch over. Each pod has a standardized amount of beans, such as the 7 grams found in espresso coffee pods, which removes the guesswork from the brewing process. This standardization will delight some coffee drinkers and frustrate others, as varying tastes may leave fans of weaker or stronger-than-average brews wishing for more control over their brew.

Coffee pod machines can be purchased from stores such as Target or home specialty chains, as well as from a variety of online sources.  Thanks to the simplicity of home cafe coffee pods, it is now easier than ever to experiment with new flavors and blends.

Freestanding Cookers: Which One Is Right For You?

Filed under Appliances, Kitchens | No Comments

There are many varieties of  free standing cookers to pick from and it’s important to select the right one. Many of us have ordered some products online and only to find that when it finally arrived it wasn’t what you expected. So follow these steps on how to decide on a good cooker for your home.

The initial step you ought to take is determine where you’d like to put it. Then you should measure the area on all sides, taking into account any overextending counter lips or floor moldings that will affect the final measurements. The reason we do this is as a result of some folks have made mistakes before by simply shopping for freestanding cookers and taking it home without measuring first. If it doesn’t fit, you will have a nice small renovation job on your hands, something we obviously want to avoid. Most European cookers are around 50 to sixty centimeters wide and sometimes 60 centimeters deep, and American ones tend to be 75 centimeters or wider, so make sure to measure both the cooker that you have in mind, and the space that you have to put it in.

Next step is to determine which fuel will work better for you, gas or electric. This is very much based on personal preference.  A free standing gas cooker is usually a lot more quicker to get hot, but with less of an ability to manage the area that heats up. The other alternative is an electric cooker.  Free standing electrical cookers will give you much more control over the heat so that the flame spreads around the pot evenly. The last choice you can opt for from is a duel fuel cooker which gives you the best of both worlds.

A Great Hardwood Floor Vacuum Review

Filed under Appliances, Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

Finding a great hardwood floor vacuum can be a tough thing. I know how it goes sometimes. You go to the store only to find a number of vacuums that somewhat fit your needs, but not completely. This can be extremely frustrating for someone who’s leading a busy life with a family. You can’t take large amounts of time out of your schedule to go shopping around from store to store. You need to know which vacuum is going to clean your floor the best, and you need to know where you can get it. No worries! We’ll help.

I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about the Eureka Boss SmartVac line of hardwood floor vacuums. Based on a very popular online survey site, this vacuum came out at the top spot in a comparison done between almost 40 different types of vacuums. These were compared by seeing how much dirt and debris was picked up on a hardwood floor surface. Beating out that much competition is a pretty hefty honor; you’d be doing yourself a favor by checking this vacuum out.

What are some of the pros and cons of this Eureka Boss vacuum? Well, one of the big pros is the fact that it’s absolutely wonderful at picking up dust and pet dander. Considering those are two of the things many people are allergic to, getting rid of these is paramount. Hardwood floors don’t attract as much as a carpet would, but you’d be surprised at how much of that sticks around on hardwood. But, with a pro there’s almost always a con. But, this may not be a show stopper for you: This vacuum is extraordinarily heavy. It weighs just over 20 pounds, which may make it difficult to haul up and down flights of stairs. It’ll move with a bit of muscle, but for smaller people this may prove a challenge.

Even with the weight issue, I still think this is one of the best hardwood floor vacuum cleaners on the market.

Mosquito Traps: Hype or Help?

Filed under Appliances, Garden | No Comments

Whether or not you live in an area that gets heavy mosquito population problems during the season, you can still appreciate the benefit that proper management of these pests could afford.  It is now possible to get safe and effective protection by using mosquito traps.  These are simple devices that work by attracting these biting insects, more selectively than those bug zappers and other devices.  The best defense against these annoying buggers is to outright prevent them from breeding.  Short of this, however, you will need to find a way to live with them.

The problem with mosquitoes is that they have developed a great ability to detect mammals, especially humans, over the millions of years that they have been around.  It is a combination of carbon dioxide, humidity and other organic compounds that we emit that attracts them.  They know that when that combination of gases is around, dinner is close by as well.

The problem with controlling them is that you might do a great job on your property to control for risks such as standing water and garbage, but your neighbors might not be so conscientious.  Therefore, the problem becomes yours because of the company you keep so to speak.  These special mosquito trap devices we are talking about are a great way to keep your property even more protected once they are hatched and also eliminates the problem of toxicity.  There are mosquito misting systems, usually reserved for larger commercial applications, that spray a fine mist into the air – much like a mist system for your patio that uses water droplets to cool your space.  This mosquito mist is laced with carcinogenic compounds that you certainly don’t want to be inhaling.

The mosquitoes trap device is much more safe than that.  What it does is this.  It is a device that emits carbon dioxide and water vapor and with some models a mosquito pheromone.  These all act as attractants to the mosquitoes.  The propane tank that is used to fuel the motor for this device is fairly lightweight and the whole unit can be moved to wherever you like – a patio, deck, or other backyard area.  You could even bring it camping if you wanted to.  In any case, as it runs these gases and scents attract the mosquitoes.  As they fly closer and closer, they are eventually right at the mouth of the trap and get sucked inside by the vacuum mechanism.  This is where they will be trapped and die.  It is a nifty device and much more selective for mosquitoes than the bug zapper and other devices which kill most any flying insect, including helpful ones for pollination and other insect control.  For more information about these mosquito traps or other patio related accessories, you can visit Patio Covers Place.

Choosing A Small Coffee Maker

Filed under Appliances, Kitchens | No Comments

There comes a point in the lives of many coffee aficionados when they want something more than the simple cup of drip coffee. While drip coffee brewed in your small coffee maker can be outstanding and a staple for most mornings, there is something about espresso that really gets people going, and it’s not just the caffeine. For many people, espresso is somewhat of a religious experience. Similar to a fine wine, a really good shot of espresso can produce an abundance of complex flavors including hints of fruit, licorice and, of course, smokiness. A properly pulled shot should not be bitter. On the contrary, a good shot should have a fair amount of rich sweetness to it. Although there is a learning curve when it comes to espresso, the good news is that it’s possible to pull great shots on a home espresso maker.

When looking for a home espresso machine it’s important to consider only models that use pressure to brew the espresso. You will want to steer clear of espresso machines that use low pressure steam, as these machines will not give you the results you’re looking for. There are several machines produced by Gaggia that use a boiler to heat the water and that produce sufficient steam to extract the flavors from the coffee beans. You should plan to spend between $200 and $300 for an entry level machine. An alternative to buying a brand new machine is to browse auction sites or local classifieds.

Apart from purchasing the machine itself, another critical purchase is a quality burr grinder. When it comes to brewing any coffee beverage, the things that matter most are the quality and freshness of the beans, the temperature of the water for proper extraction and the consistency and quality of the grind. Plan to spend about $75 for an entry level conical burr grinder, such as the Solis Maestro. Even the best small coffee maker on the market will not perform as expected when coupled with a poor quality grinder.

Range Cookers: Consider Your Options

Filed under Appliances, Kitchens | No Comments

When you are on the hunt for a new cooker, which most people are at some point in their lives, you need to make sure it fits in with your requirements. With so many cheap range cookers on the market it can be difficult to find the right quality. Sometimes cheap is not the best long term solution, as most of these cookers will start to cause problems in the near future. The first thing you need to determine is what you are actually going to use it for.

A gas range cooker is good for its instant heat. The gas hob will spark up right away and gives a very even heat distribution. However the gas oven will need to be pre-heated before you put anything in there. Some of the more modern gas cookers have zoned heating which allows you to cook two or three different meals at different speeds to one another. Installing a gas oven is more of a problem because you will need the services of a fully qualified gas engineer. It is illegal for you to do it yourself. If you buy from a respected store like argos they offer an installation service for an extra price, but at least you will know it has been installed properly and is safe to use.

Electric range cookers take longer to heat up than gas, and the hob can cause uneven heating. The electric oven is far better and more efficient than the gas type ovens, and fan assisted ovens will cook your food much quicker and more evenly. For the best of both worlds you can opt for a dual fuel cooker which combines gas and electric. Usually you will have a gas hob and an electric oven. If you have many mouths to feed then you want to try a commercial size range cooker. These are much larger than your average cooker and some even have up to eight hobs and two ovens. The cost is pretty steep as you can imagine, but the benefits are very good indeed. Argos online sell various styles and designs of these ovens at some of the lowest prices around. Just be aware that if you buy online the delivery charges are quite considerable for large items.

Garden Vacuum Purchases: Your Options In A Leaf Blower Vacuum

Filed under Appliances, Garden | No Comments

Tired of all those leaves cluttering up your yard?  Consider a garden vacuum for easy yard clean up.

A leaf blower vacuum comes in handy for those people who do not have the strength to go out into their front yards and stand for hours on end to rake up leaves and place them in to bags to be placed out to the curb for the weekly pickup during the fall season to discard of all the leaves. The leaf vacuum offers you a safer alternative to discard of all the leaves that will clutter the yard and make it look messy. Perhaps the local neighborhood boy does not know that the you cannot do it and has not stopped by to ask for a job to make some extra money. However you likely do have enough energy and strength to push a garden leaf vacuum to get rid of the leaves that are being blown all around the yard.

There are quite a few different types of leaf vacuums.  A gas-powered garden vacuum blower is the most powerful kind as fat as blowing strength and speed are concerned.  The downside is that is is also the noisiest kind of outdoor vacuum, and will also emit unhealthy gas fumes.  While it is the most efficient of your options, there are definitely health concerns involved.

An electric vacuum blower doesn’t have these disadvantages.  It is rather lightweight and quieter than its gas powered counterpart, but it has one major drawback– the cord.  Trying to suck up leaves from all the obscure corners of your yard can be tough if the cord isn’t quite long enough.  And if you start to walk in circles a bit, its easy to get tangled up in the cord.

The cordless garden blower vacuum is definitely the most convenient of your options.  No smelly gas fumes, and no long cord to trip you up or limit your movements.  However, you will be restrained by the life of the battery, and remember that you will also be carrying around the extra weight that the battery adds on, so keep those considerations in mind when deciding on the type of blower you’ll be purchasing.

You can purchase a leaf blower vacuum in a number of stores or online sites and they will range in price. The size of your lawn will determine how much you are going to pay to purchase a lawn leaf vacuum. The larger the size of the vacuum, the more the item is going to cost. However some sites will sell these items at a discount price to people who do not want to spend an arm and a leg on a piece of lawn equipment where a ten dollar rake would have worked just as well. However the amount of time you are going to spend in your yard will decrease drastically if you do buy a garden vacuum, and you will be glad you spent the money.

Oven Thermometer Calibration Guide

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

An oven’s thermostat can be out of calibration, causing it to not heat up enough, or heat up too far. For many ovens, this is simple to fix, using oven thermometer calibration.

First, determine if you can calibrate your oven. If your oven has a touch pad, it is digital, and you will need to consult your manual to see if you can calibrate your oven, and how. For regular ovens, you will need to pull the thermostat knob off without turning it at all. Inside that shaft that was under the knob should be a set screw. If so, you can adjust that oven’s thermostat.

You will need a screwdriver that fits that set screw, and an oven thermometer. For the second, you can get one cheap from many hardware stores. First, you will want to find out how accurate your oven thermometer is. Boil a pot of water until it is at full steam, then put the thermometer in. Normally, water boils at 212 degrees. This can vary based on elevation, so you will need to find out what temperature water boils at for your elevation. Keep in mind the difference between your thermometer and the temperature water should boil at for you.

Now, find out how accurate your oven is. Place the over thermometer in the over and turn it to 375, then wait for it to heat up. Give the thermometer a minute to ensure an accurate reading, then take the reading. Let’s say your thermometer was 3 degrees too high, and the thermometer read 388. That means it was at 385, when it should have been 375, and was 10 degrees too high.

Use the screwdriver to make slight adjustments to the set screw, clockwise to raise the temperature and counter-clockwise to lower it. You shouldn’t make more than one-fourth of a turn at a time. Repeat this until you get the correct temperature for your oven. Once the thermometer reads right, taking into account how far off it is, you have correctly completed the oven thermometer calibration!

Choosing An Air Conditioner

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

Having the right air conditioning is your house is especially important during the hot summer months, but choosing the right one isn’t always easy. When you’re deciding whether you need to buy an air conditioning unit for your house need to think carefully about what kind of climate you live in, how big your house is and which rooms you need to be conditioned. Once you have done this you can then decide on which kind of air conditioning unit to buy.

The first need to think about is how much money you have to spend on a new air conditioning unit. If you only have a small budget than buying a portable air conditioner is probably the best way to go. If, on the other hand, you need to make sure the whole house is air conditioned at all times then you’ll need to install an internal air conditioning system which will be a lot more money.

When deciding on the air conditioner that you need you need to make sure you know how big your room is and how much volume of air it contains. If you buy an air conditioner that is too powerful than you will be wasting energy, and if you buy one that is too small you won’t be able to air condition the entire room.

Remember that when you buy air conditioning unit you will pay for the brand name like you do any other kind of product. For this reason it is often a good idea to read some reviews of lesser-known brands to see if you can find it cheaper unit that is still the same level of quality. However, remember that you do generally get what you pay for several more you pay the more likely you are to get a unit that is able to air condition your room effectively.

Washers & Dryers That Suit Your Home

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

Washers & dryers play a part in practically everyone’s homes so let’s take a closer look at the advantages of purchasing one type over another.

Firstly let’s take a look at front load washers & dryers.  These are better at cleaning your clothes, more energy efficient and use less water. Although these machines are more expensive than their top load counterparts this is basically due to the fact that they are newer on the market but prices are beginning to drop. Although there were some problems with frontload washing machines when they first came on to the market, these teething problems have now been ironed out like mould growing around the seal due to insufficient ventilation. Top loaders, though cheaper, work with a twisting mechanism that not only gives your clothes a shorter life span, but uses up more electricity. Furthermore, the clothes come out cleaner with a tumbling action. For those looking for a space saver, a top load is definitely not for you. It is recommended for you to consider stackable washers & dryers.

When considering stacked washers & dryers, one has to realize that not every machine can be stacked. Furthermore, once the dryer is placed on top of the machine it can be difficult to reach. Samsung has several stacked washers and dryers and bosch washers & dryers can also be stacked but you also need to buy a stacking kit which includes a large ‘shelf’ that the machine fits snugly on. You can buy universal stacking kits but stacked washers and dryers may not be as secure as one custom made for that product. Although some people stack their dryers without a kit, this is highly unadvisable as the dryer could fall off the machine during a particularly vigorous spin and may accidentally fall on someone.

Portable washers & dryers are also on the market. One can purchase a portable package that comes out of the box and can be used straight away. The lockable wheels fix onto the bottom of the machine and the water pipe is attachable to any faucet. This is ideal if you are really lacking in space and want to store the machine in a garage. Lg washers & dryers can be used in conjunction with these kits and they even do a wall mountable dryer that takes up zero floor space!

Front load washers and dryers are becoming more and more popular and top loaders are seen infrequently in houses nowadays. Those who do use them are usually only doing so because they bought it many years ago and it is still running. Although front loads are more expensive to buy, they are more energy efficient and cost effective in the long run using up less water and electricity. An all round better buy.

The Benefits Of A Mini Fridge

Filed under Appliances | No Comments

A mini fridge is the perfect appliance for almost everyone. They measure at approximately 8 x 10 x 11 inch but some are as big as 25 x 18 x 17 depending on the model. There is the pink mini fridge which is ideal for a girl’s dorm room, especially to store all those vegetables, bottles of water and late night chocolate energy bars! The stainless steel mini fridge will look exceptionally classy on a businessman’s desk and it is small so does not take up precious space. In fact, these fridges are so dinky they can even be put on a nightstand for those who like to go to bed with a cold drink and still be able to enjoy it if they wake up in the middle of the night.

Those who travel across country and spend a lot of time in their car should always carry with them a portable mini fridge. Although it may need an adapter in order for it to plug into the car, these are easily purchased. Some of these mini fridges even come with a convenient carry handle. Mini fridge prices vary from $30-$100 dollars but even a cheap mini fridge will keep beverages cool.  It is also a great idea to pick up one of these portable fridges when moving if you will be traveling for a long time.  A friend of mine moved cross country and her San Antonio movers had nothing to offer her in terms of keeping her perishables refrigerated, something she hadn’t even given a though to before the trip.

However, there are some disadvantages to all this. A mini refrigerator is much smaller in volume than a regular fridge and does not have the capacity to store a lot of food. Furthermore, although they do keep food and drink cool, it is not with the efficiency of a regular large fridge.

Having said that, mini refrigerators are great for those who need drinks and small snacks on standby. Some models, like the danby mini fridge even come with a compact little freezer. This particular model comes with a push button de-frost, can store tall bottles and one can even change the hinges on the door to conveniently open in a small space. Most people considering mini refrigerators are doing so as space savers so this is a very practical feature.

The avanti mini fridge also has a small freezer section. This model is slightly larger and can hold up to a case and a half of drink plus some food. Ideal for a dorm party, watching a football game or traveling across country. This mini fridge cooler is said to be super efficient and even comes with an ice cube holder accessory and carry handle.

Mini fridges are small in size but great in the ability to enhance ones life. A must have.
