Flea Bombs, Collars, and Shampoo: Flea Solutions That Work

Filed under Cleaning | No Comments

Even the most cared-for pets can get fleas at any point. These small blood-sucking insects give harm to any warm-blooded animal, as well as inconvenience and health hazards to pet owners. These fleas may easily transmit various diseases to people, especially children, who like to cuddle or hold pets.

Affected animals may have dermatitis, anemia, or tapeworm. Also, experts say that the transmitted diseases to humans include the serious murine typhus from a flea’s waste, or bubonic plague (admittedly rare now) from a flea’s bite. Meanwhile, if fleas are accidentally swallowed by a human or other animal, existing tapeworm eggs in them can be passed on. Thus, rubber gloves must be used when handling any pet with fleas, and hands must be thoroughly washed after.

To get rid of fleas in the home, there are effective products in the market. There are the flea bombs, which are insecticides that go off like ‘bombs’. One of such should be strategically placed in an area where the fleas are, usually on a carpet, on sofas, etc. These bombs eliminate larvae and flea eggs. These are to be used only when a treated area is evacuated by humans as well as pets. More so, all food-related surfaces must be covered entirely while treatment is in progress, and then fully washed before using them again.

Another option is a flea collar to prevent fleas on your pet rather than the environment as above. It is actually a collar which works two ways: through letting out a flea-toxic gas, or by absorption into the pet’s internal fat layer. This gas is generally effective only within the areas of the neck and head. On one hand, the absorption way is more effective since it goes down into the pores. This treatment type is ideal for preventive measures; before fleas actually set in.

One more way is through a flea shampoo. It kills adult fleas, and also washes away larvae and flea wastes on the pet’s body. Using this is very easy; just the usual bathing process. The shampoo should be left for a minimum of ten minutes before rinsing.

The type of treatment will depend on the severity of fleas, and on the pet owners’ respective discretion. Before buying any, research should be carried out so that the chosen treatment will be effective. A flea-free pet is a healthy and happy pet and that goes for the owner too.

DIY: Be Your Own Window Cleaning Service

Filed under Cleaning, Windows | No Comments

Washing windows to get a better view only takes a few minutes per window. It is something you can do gradually, a window or two per weekend as part of your do it yourself home improvement chores. If you take this task on and just do it yourself, you can avoid having to pay for an expensive window cleaning service.

Washing windows is a chore that goes back at least a century. Many different ways are available to wash windows. There are a number of new gadgets on the market; however, the same old styles work just as well. The traditional window washing technique includes Windex or an off brand of window cleaner used together with old newspapers.

Many people have used paper towels in the past but it is not advisable. The different types of paper towels on the market are basically two styles. They come in a thick style which is not a good idea because it can leave fuzzes on the window; and thin paper towels will shred and they do not leave a good looking window either.

Newspaper works for washing windows for a better view; the science behind it is not that clear but the fact that washing windows with glass cleaner and newspaper will give you a window that appears clean and without streaks. Newspaper also works for cleaning mirrors and other glass surfaces. It is one of the least expensive ways to clean windows and it is also one of the easiest.

There are a number of tips about cleaning windows which will give you more shine to your windows. Washing the windows on the outside of the house should be done before washing the inside windows; also do not wash windows during noon time houses when the sun is hottest; try washing them either in the morning or evening.

The way you wash the windows is important; kind of like the scene from Karate Kid when he is learning to paint. When washing inside windows you should use the motion of a side to side action; but on the outside windows you’ll be washing from top to bottom. After you have finished you’ll be able to see if you need any touch ups.

If you are pregnant, or have young children at home, or if you are simply concerned about chemical sensitivities in cleaning products, take time to review the ingredients of your window cleaning supplies. In any case, even if they are not at all toxic, you will want to store all detergents, sprays, and the rest of your window cleaning equipment high out of the reach of your children.

Getting a Carpet Steam Cleaner: My Experience

Filed under Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

About a year ago I sold my apartment and moved into my first proper home with my now fiancé. While I was preparing my apartment for sale I decide that the carpets definitely needed a good cleaning if I was going to make the place look good to potential buyers. I called up a local cleaning company who were very helpful and reasonable; to be fair the apartment wasn’t that large so it was never going to be a big job. I can definitely recommend this type of service when you are looking to sell a property. Their cleaning really gave a lift to the look of the place and with a quick re paint of the walls the apartment sold quickly.

Our new home was considerably larger than my bachelor apartment and was carpeted throughout and after about six months it was clear that giving the carpets and rugs that we had a good team clean was going to have to become a regular event, certainly as far as my girlfriend was concerned. While I would have loved to get the professionals in every three months our household budget just didn’t extend to such luxuries.

My friend David mentioned that he had had a lot of success renting a carpet steam cleaner and so I decided to give it a go. My first run was far from a qualified success. The machine I rented wasn’t the most up to date and didn’t come with much in the way of instructions. The net result wasn’t a disaster but it certainly wasn’t up to professional standards. I ended up getting the carpets very damp and it took over a week before the carpets were entirely dry. Of course walking around on wet carpets, as well as being uncomfortable, only got them dirty before they were dry and the chemical smell was pretty strong. Also I think I must have used too much cleaning solution because even when the carpets died out there was still a strong odor and the floors felt a bit sticky with residue. The final disappointment was that although cheaper than a professional service, renting still wasn’t that cheap and was a bit of a hassle to organize.

Thankfully another friend of mine, Tim, had the perfect solution. He’d gone out and bought himself a domestic upright steam cleaner. It looked like a pimped up vacuum cleaner and very space age with all its different attachments but he swore by it and I was convinced. With his help, I navigated my way through all the different brands and models and ended up buying a Bissell steam cleaner that did all the jobs I needed. This particular model was even good for cleaning the tiled floor in the kitchen. Although close to $300 it has definitely been a wise purchase. I can tackle all the cleaning jobs around the house and the very detailed instructions and clever features means I haven’t damaged any surfaces.

If you have the storage room for such a machine and can get the full use of all the different attachments it is definitely worth the initial outlay. Shop around for the best price and also take the time to research the right cleaning solutions as well.

I’ve found two great sites for more information on carpet cleaning. The first is a site called Carpet Steam Cleaner Solution.com with all sorts of advice and the second is  Carpet Cleaning Solution.org which deals specifically with cleaning detergents.

Determining Your Grout Cleaning Cost

Filed under Cleaning | No Comments

Owning a home can be expensive because you not only have to pay your mortgage every month, but you have to take care of it. The maintenance and cleaning costs of keeping your home is good condition can add up. There is one project that should not cost too much but will give you huge returns when it comes to resale value. That chore is grout cleaning.

Clean tile grout can make a huge difference in how attractive your house looks and leaves a good impression on potential buyers because they can tell you take good care of your home. If your grout is moldy and dirty then people might start to wonder what else you do not take good care of. Plus the presence of mold could turn off a potential buyer entirely if someone in their family has allergy problems.

Keeping your grout clean does not cost a lot of money if you clean grout yourself instead of hiring a professional. In fact, the grout cleaning cost is more in time than in dollars. You can keep your grout looking like new with a few household items and a few brushes and cloths. You just need to be willing to put in the time.

A baking soda paste made with a little bit of vinegar is a great grout cleaner. You just spread the paste onto the grout lines and let it sit for about ten to twenty minutes. Then you scrub the grout with circular motions with a medium bristled brush. Wipe away the residue with a clean damp cloth and you are on your way. This method is labor intensive and will take some time, but it is cheap.

If you are willing to spend a little more money you can rent grout cleaning machines that use steam to work dirt out of the grout and a rotating brush system to scrub. The machines usually have suction that cleans up the dirty water after you are finished. If you are willing to spend even more, you can hire a professional grout cleaning company to come in a few times a year to clean your grout. However, if you do not keep up with grout cleaning on a weekly basis, it becomes harder and harder to get it clean because permanent stains start to form.

Mold in Basement Tips

Filed under Cleaning | No Comments

If you find yourself experience unexplained health problems or you can smell a strong musty odor in your home, then it’s possible that you have mold in the basement. And if you are sick, you should have a professional clean up the mold rather than doing it yourself.

If however you believe you can tackle the job yourself, then you need to make sure that the infested area is contained by securing it with plastic sheeting before you begin any work.

You’ll also want to make sure that the area is dried and repaired from any water leaks and you should at the very least install a dehumidifier to eliminate moisture, which is the perfect breeding ground for mold. You will also need to protect yourself from the fungus by wearing protective clothing and gear such as rubber gloves, eyewear and a respiratory mask.

Make sure you remove any furniture or personal items from the room before you begin. If any items are contaminated with mold you’ll want to seal them in a bag and discard them if they’re not salvageable.

Next, you’ll want to kill the fungus using a basement mold removal product. Clean up should be done as soon as possible and you should always follow the directions on the product or they might not be effective on the mold.

Once you’ve applied the mold removal product and allowed for ample time, you should rinse it with water if necessary. This is specifically a good idea if you’ve chosen to use a chemical product that can be harmful to your health even after the cleaning process.

Then, wipe down all of walls and any surfaces where the mold was present using a mild detergent and rags. Be sure to swipe with a clean side of the rag every time, otherwise you’ll just re-contaminate the surface area and you’ll have to start all over with removing mold in the basement again.

Black Mold Inspection Ins and Outs

Filed under Bathrooms, Cleaning | No Comments

A black mold inspection is extremely important if you suspect there is mold in your home.  Your home should always be inspected by a certified and licensed expert and you should never accept anything less.

It may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the amount of mold growing in your home and the services that are used. Some services used may include inspecting for all types of mold including the toxic stuff, testing for all molds, testing for moisture problems, testing for allergy issues such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander and testing for the quality of air in your home.

However, in most cases the inspector will likely test for mold using a swab test that is then sent to a lab for analysis.

He or she may test for mold in crawl spaces, hidden areas, the attic, bathroom, basement and kitchen. He or she may inspect your home both visually and by physically taking samples. When a home is visually inspected the process generally includes detecting the types of mold that are visible in your home.

The mold inspector may also analyze the areas outside of your home that are showing signs of mold growth using moisture meter testing, thermal imaging, and humidity testing. This testing process is done to identify the nature of the fungus and to give insight on the steps necessary to remove the mold if they are toxic.

Even if the molds are not toxic, it’s still extremely critical to start the mold removal process since spores from the fungus can lead to serious health problems. Remember, toxic molds are not the only fungi that can cause allergies, sinus infections and so forth.

So as soon as you’ve completed a black mold inspection, you should immediately call a professional to remove the mold if there is a problem found.

A Great Hardwood Floor Vacuum Review

Filed under Appliances, Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

Finding a great hardwood floor vacuum can be a tough thing. I know how it goes sometimes. You go to the store only to find a number of vacuums that somewhat fit your needs, but not completely. This can be extremely frustrating for someone who’s leading a busy life with a family. You can’t take large amounts of time out of your schedule to go shopping around from store to store. You need to know which vacuum is going to clean your floor the best, and you need to know where you can get it. No worries! We’ll help.

I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about the Eureka Boss SmartVac line of hardwood floor vacuums. Based on a very popular online survey site, this vacuum came out at the top spot in a comparison done between almost 40 different types of vacuums. These were compared by seeing how much dirt and debris was picked up on a hardwood floor surface. Beating out that much competition is a pretty hefty honor; you’d be doing yourself a favor by checking this vacuum out.

What are some of the pros and cons of this Eureka Boss vacuum? Well, one of the big pros is the fact that it’s absolutely wonderful at picking up dust and pet dander. Considering those are two of the things many people are allergic to, getting rid of these is paramount. Hardwood floors don’t attract as much as a carpet would, but you’d be surprised at how much of that sticks around on hardwood. But, with a pro there’s almost always a con. But, this may not be a show stopper for you: This vacuum is extraordinarily heavy. It weighs just over 20 pounds, which may make it difficult to haul up and down flights of stairs. It’ll move with a bit of muscle, but for smaller people this may prove a challenge.

Even with the weight issue, I still think this is one of the best hardwood floor vacuum cleaners on the market.

Tile and Grout Cleaning Help

Filed under Bathrooms, Cleaning, Kitchens | No Comments

The following is a guide on the best method for cleaning grout without using harsh chemicals.  Grout is notorious for attracting dirt and mildew and is often very hard to get clean.  Because grout is so hard to clean, traditional grout cleaner uses harsh chemicals that is toxic to both people and the environment.  This article will discuss greener and environmentally friendly ways of cleaning grout.

A change to green products to clean tile grout will help to improve both the outdoor and indoor environment.  For this reason, consider using baking soda as your active cleaning ingredient.  In order to remove mildew and mold from between you tiles, begin by pouring water over the tiles and then pour baking soda over the same area.  Use a toothbrush to scrub the grout lines and then allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.  Baking soda will disinfect and deodorize your grout and tiles naturally, without dangerous chemicals that are damaging to both you and the environment.  Removing the baking soda is easy.  Take a few gallons of boiled water and pour it over the tile, using rags or a drain to remove excess water.

Grout cleaning products that are safe for you, your home, and the environment, such as baking soda, are cheap but effective.  The commercial cleaning solutions are made from so many harmful chemicals and are often very expensive, it only makes sense to try and find a natural solution.  However, there are some cleaners on the market that offer environmentally friendly solutions, such as Seventh Generation.  They are known for their “green” products and have encouraged many traditional companies to follow suit with their own versions of green products.

Tile and grout cleaning is never going to be fun, but it is necessary.  The next time you need clean yours, research some greener methods first by doing some online searches.  You can also purchase ready-made products that are safe for the environment if you so choose.
