New Kitchen and Bathroom Wall Decorating Ideas

Filed under Bathrooms, Decorating, Kitchens | No Comments

If you are bored with the current walls in your house, there are quite a few DIY projects that can help you turn your walls into something creative and beautiful on a very low budget. Though you can easily find ideas for every room of the house, we will just look at the kitchen and bathroom right now.

One of the easiest and quickest things you can do in your kitchen that can alter the entire look is to replace your current backsplash. The Internet has thousands of kitchen backsplash ideas along with detailed instructions for free. Or, you could just use these as ideas to get your own creative juices flowing. You can use practically any material you want such as ceramic tile, glass tile, bricks, rocks, natural stone tile, copper, tin, stainless steel, bronze, crushed seashells, glass blocks and probably any other thing you have thought of using.

Why stop with a backsplash? There are many other ideas for the walls of your kitchen also. Try painting with a new color. Did you know that different colors have different psychological affects on the people that are in the room? Since a kitchen does not usually have large amounts of wall space, colors like red or yellow or orange can be appropriate. Red is a powerful color but it can invoke anger so you don’t want to use too much. Yellow is a cheerful color and can make you feel happy but only if you don’t over do it and orange is an energetic and inspiring color but once again, it is preferable to use in small doses. Green is a great color for any room because it is peaceful and calms people down. You could also consider some faux techniques with your painting and some creative wall hangings or art. Try some decorative hooks and hang your skillets and utensils or aprons and coffee mugs. Brightly colored plates on wire racks are a very nice affect in the kitchen as well.

If you are decorating a bathroom, you probably have a rather small space to work with. Once again, the colors used can have an affect on the people that are in the room so choose wisely. You can also find thousands of creative bathroom wall decorating ideas on the Internet. Though the bathroom is usually considered to be a mostly functional room, we should consider that if we spend a great deal of time each morning inside it getting ourselves ready to face the day, maybe we should decorate it in a way to help us to not only be ready physically, but mentally also. You could go with calming colors or perhaps inspiring, energetic colors. Colors that can make you angry might not be a good choice!

After you finish with your kitchen and bathroom you may be ready to move on to the living room and bedrooms! Whatever room you are tackling, be sure to use your own tastes and imagination to create a beautiful home that reflects your personality that will  be warm and welcoming to all who enter.

Variations of home decorations offer a unique and wide selection of styles that go from classic to contemporary. You can disregard the age and styling of your living room and preferential décor because when you select a mirrored coffee table, it guarantees a vibe of charm and warmth to essentially any interior space. Another benefit is the overall convenience and versatile functionality that allows you to utilize the table for numerous purposes.

These tables come in all shapes in sizes that mostly fall along the lines of the classic oval, round, and square dimensions, along with minimal deviations if you choose to customize. Boasting the proper theme should strongly be considered to achieve the utmost appeal, something like an oval coffee table. The benefit of this table’s small, yet convenient size gives you the freedom of locating it in any room, whether it’s spacious or confined, while holding the ability to complement that space’s existing furniture.

The mirrored coffee table is also beneficial due to its well rounded capabilities because of the relatively light weight and non obtrusive shape, making it easy to rearrange and relocate. One of these magnificent qualities is the beautifully vibrant reflection generated by sunlight that lights up your room. You’ll also enjoy the spacious surface area which makes it easy to keep things like magazines, books, and coffee cups on the top.

The upkeep of the mirrored coffee table is a very simple task that involves minimal effort. You don’t have to worry about the scratches and other damage that’s common with wood. Cleaning the surface requires glass cleaner and a quick wipe down, which will maintain that squeaky clean look with the occasional cleaning.

When it comes to buying a suitable table, doing some shopping around is your best option. Furniture stores, yard sales, and the internet are your best options. Your best bet is using the internet because of the great value, convenience, and vast selection that will ensure you find incredible deals.

Cheap Room Dividers – Great Ideas for Using Them in the Home

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

Dividing large spaces need not have to be expensive.  Creativity is the key in making spaces functional as well as cozy.  The fabric screens are some of the cheap room dividers you can find in the market.  And the most popular room dividers especially to those living in small spaces are hanging curtains.  The simplest way to do it is to find some fabric and punch some holes in it, put some hooks and hang it in a rod.  But to make the hanging curtain room divider look neat and presentable mount it using ceiling track room dividers.  This enables you to move the curtain in the direction you want to move.  And while you are in the mood for sewing curtain, make some French door curtains for the kitchen or front door to match your hanging room dividers.

Often times cheap room dividers can cost nothing.  Simply move the furniture around and you can create a cozy place from the spacious living room where you can read and entertain guests.  Sofa and bookshelves will make good dividers to demarcate the spaces without blocking the air from freely flowing.  Box planter can also be used to section a room.  Find a corner in your living room or bedroom and put a desk or a console table.  Add a chair and on the side put the planter box with either live or artificial plants.  Accessorize it with a lamp and you have your own reading nook.  Plants make a lively addition to the room and lend a finishing touch to the room.

And do not forget, shopping for cheap room dividers should start at your storage room or attics.  Then shop around for old furniture and shelves from your family’s basement or your neighbors.  Like what designer said about old stuff, repurpose it.

Great Kitchen Curtain Ideas

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens | No Comments

Installing curtains in your kitchen is an affordable and relatively instant way to enhance the visual appeal of one of the most important rooms in your home. Putting up a set of curtains can provide a huge impact without putting a big dent in your wallet. Selecting the right window treatments for your kitchen is all about combining a bit of your own personality with the modern and stylish decor trends. Of course, having a few kitchen curtain ideas doesn’t hurt either, and the following article will provide you with some things to consider when it comes to sprucing up your kitchen.

Although curtains represent a large part of a room’s decor, it’s always surprising to me how often they are overlooked, particularly when you consider just how affordable they can be. When selecting curtains, one of the best ways to get inspired is by glancing through magazines and websites that specialize in home decor. Rather than copy a particular design, consider grabbing a few ideas and forming something unique. Be careful to avoid extremely bright colors unless they fit well within your overall design scheme. When in doubt, consider using neutral tones and sheer fabrics, which will allow natural light to pass into your kitchen.

You also want to avoid fancy curtains with extravagant details, as curtains of this type are better suited to formal dining and living areas. Ideally, window coverings for the kitchen should be relatively clean and simple. After all, the last thing you want is for your curtains to become a distraction. The fabric and pattern you select should blend in seamlessly with your existing decor. You can even get matching curtains and chair cushions. Consider also that the fabric you select should be machine washable, as kitchen curtains have a tendency to get dirty.

Ultimately, choosing curtains for your kitchen is all about selecting materials that are relatively conservative in their appearance. While the material of pattern you choose to use is entirely up to you, the end result should be visually appealing not only to you, but also to family and guests.

The Pine tree is pretty fragrant, whereas a table crafted from this wood can still hold its perfume for a long period. Pine is broadly used in the fabrication of wooden furniture. However, it is much recommended using a rustic pine coffee table as indoor furniture.

These various types of wood have the potential to change the overall atmosphere of your home, and each type has its own natural touch in furniture. An Oval Rug or Shag Rug: Which are Better Suited for Heavy Activity?

Filed under Decorating, Flooring | No Comments

While both oval rugs and shag rugs can be purchased in a mass merchandiser or other department store, which is about the only thing they have in common. An oval rug can come in a variety of sizes and colors, as do shag rugs, but one is better suited to certain areas of the home than the other is. Additionally, the look and feel of either can make the difference in choosing one for the home.

They are typically braided and then sewn together in ovals. The patterns can be braided within braids, or they can be different colors sewn together. Some are three feet by two feet across, yet others are four feet by six feet across. You can find an oval rug to fit just about any space. Ovals also come in sizes that can cover an entire floor. These are made with a rubber backing, which is great for people using them on a hardwood floor. With the rubber, they will not slide everywhere. Additionally, the oval shape makes these rugs great for decoration and can be hand made as well.

Shag rugs, on the other hand, are typically square, although they also come in a variety of sizes and colors. However, in comparison to an oval rug, a small shag rug is good for kitchen use, or for an outside welcome mat. Additionally, many kids like the feeling a shag rug gives and like to use them in their bedrooms. Shags usually have a rubber backing, however, instead of the material being braided, each shag is woven into the backing then cut so the end frays, which is what makes the shag.

Cheap shag rugs are better for heavier traffic areas because in most cases, they are machine washable, whereas most other rugs are not. Shag rugs can take a beating and are great for overall usage, but other rugs should be treasured and are great for light usage.

Antler Furniture – Is It For Your Home?

Filed under Decorating, Furniture | No Comments

Having antler furniture is a creative way to spice up your home. This is perfect if you want style and artistry in your living room.

Although antler furniture can be expensive, it is durable. The pieces of furniture are made from real antlers taken from deer but there’s nothing to worry about as the deer don’t have to be killed so it is not illegal. The antler is a shed off part of the animal so manufacturers will just have to look for them and pick them up. Another place to obtain antlers is to pry the antlers from the carcasses of dead dear.

Manufacturers gather antlers, and with human hands, build artistic and durable furniture for the home. An entire living room set can be made from antlers and these range from antler lamps to tables. Of course, it is expected that these will be heavier but the durability does speak for itself. If you are interested in making a purchase for some, you can take a look online. Manufacturers always display their best creations for the buyers to choose from. Now these are expensive but it is guaranteed that you don’t have to buy another furniture set many years to come.

If you want to test your artistic skills, you can even build your own furniture set made from antlers. To do that, you only have to think about how to get antlers legally. The great thing ownership is that it’s yours, it’s free and you did it yourself. Building your own is less expensive and you can have fun at the same time. Once the fruit of your labor is done, you can set it up in your living room and show it to your friends. You can even start a business of building antler furniture. It won’t be easy but the rewards in the long run are great.

Oval Rugs Make Great Accents for Many Rooms

Filed under Decorating, Flooring | No Comments

Oval rugs make ideal accents for many rooms in the home. They are so varied that you can choose a color theme and material of your choice, whether you want a product made of high quality materials or one that is easy to clean and maintain.  They are available in many prices ranges as well

This shape is not as common as the others. However, you can still find a suitable product for the home in bed and bath stores, major retailers and even in some discount stores. Items can consist of natural or synthetic fibers, depending on what works best for your particular situation.

Braided oval rugs are still available today, although you may remember one from your grandmother’s house or in a weekend cottage. They are durable and relatively low maintenance. The newer products of today include many more vibrant color schemes, which are much different from the products previously designed in mostly muted tones.

Wool oval rugs are very durable, soft to the touch and warm. They often need to be professionally cleaned, but can last for decades with proper care. A large piece in a living room seating area can add a very elegant touch to the space and become the focal point of the room.

Using this item in the dining room is great for drawing attention to the dining set or special features. It can be used under similarly shaped tables, as well as with those of a rectangular construction. There are products in many stain resistant materials that are more suitable for use in an eating area.

If you need something more modern, contemporary rugs are offer plenty of variety. You can choose a block pattern to bring out a few less obvious colors in the room.  An abstract design may be useful in rooms with modern furniture that need a splash of color.

Antique Clocks: How to Determine the Value of an Old Anniversary Clock

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

People have various reasons as to why they want to acquire old anniversary clocks. Ever since their introduction in 1880, the demand for these types of antique clocks has grown immensely. This is mainly because of their unique clock mechanism, convenient glass dome design, superb time-telling capabilities, and extreme reliability.

The greatest thing about anniversary clocks is their distinct winding mechanism. They only need to be wounded once a year unlike the 30-hour antique grandfather clock or 8-day antique mantle clock that requires constant wounding. Once they are set and adjusted, anniversary clocks are capable of flawlessly running for over a year, 400 days to be exact.

Old anniversary clocks are considered as one of the most sought after collectible antique clocks. In fact, many collectors are looking for rare variants and models of anniversary clocks. The value of anniversary clocks differs greatly depending on the following factors:

  • the real age of the clock (the older the clock is, the more valuable it becomes)
  • the maker or manufacturer of the clock (anniversary clocks made by world-renowned clock makers or companies always come with a hefty price)
  • the quality of the clock (those that are well-maintained and with less visible scratches are normally sold in higher prices)
  • the present condition of their antique clock parts (whether they are still intact or have already been modified)
  • the materials used in producing the clock (anniversary clock made from rare and expensive metals are certainly more valuable)
  • the clock’s overall style and design (anniversary clocks featuring sophisticated designs and intricate style details have higher market value)

To find real antique anniversary clocks, you should scour from the following buying avenues:

  • online auction or bidding sites (specializing in antique clocks)
  • newspaper and online classifieds
  • local antique shops
  • clock museums

It is highly recommended that you seek the help of an antique clock expert to ensure that you will be acquiring real clock antiquities.

A Room Divider Screen Helps

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

Open plan homes are modern, peaceful, and beautifully designed. However, there are some problems of living in an open plan home. There are ways around these potential challenges. One can still enjoy the bliss of an open spaced layout.

Noise transfer is one problem many people encounter. Since there are no walls, a loud television, radio, or even conversation can interfere with others who are looking for peace and quiet. This can be overcome by putting some effort into the placement of furniture and other accessories. Using larger pieces such as a couch to block off the sound from a television can help. Room dividers can also muffle or block sound. Keeping an open space clean is essential to maintain the Zen like feeling conveyed with such a space. One way to keep tidy is to hide clutter and again a room divider screen can help here. Giving each item a specified place it belongs in can achieve this goal. Ottomans with storage capabilities can help keep clutter under control. Other storage units such as stylish shelving can also help keep a space organized. One way to give a sense of comfort and coziness to an open plan is to divide rooms with screens. These screens can block off sections of a room, allowing space for specific activities or even moods. For example, a warm sitting area can be kept separate from a game room. To help the screens fit into the decor, artwork can be placed on the divider screens. Overall, a flowing and modern feel can be achieved.

One does not need to be concerned about the problems of living in an open plan home. With some innovation a neat, stylish, and individual decor can be developed. Enjoy the peace and beauty of open space by staying organized and creative. If done properly an oasis of relaxation can be created.

A Tile Kitchen Backsplash For Stunning Kitchen Decor

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens | No Comments

Any homeowner who has made more than one house makeover can tell you that the design of the kitchen can truly make a whole lot of difference in the overall home interior theme. Some would even argue that the kitchen is the most important room of the house and not the living room or the bedroom. Aside from the fact that it is used more than three times a day, most house guests would judge the way you run your home based on the situation of your kitchen; whether it’s clean or unclean, well designed or poorly constructed. So, if you’re going to set a foot on giving your home a revamp, you might as well start with your kitchen. Now, when it comes to kitchen improvement, adding a kitchen tile backsplash can be a good start.

First off, a kitchen backsplash is a section that runs along the sink, countertops, and certain appliances. It’s just a small detail that protects the wall of your kitchen from food and oil splatters from blending and mixing. Remember those tiny food particles staining on the wall or the sink when you’re processing a vegetable mix? You may not be able to prevent the splatters coming out of your blender, but you can always protect your kitchen from these dirty splatters with tile backsplashes.

Kitchen Granite with Tile Backsplash
Kitchen backsplashes are not difficult to find as they are very much available on the market. However, you have to be careful in picking the right one. Consider the fixtures that you have in your kitchen. Don’t worry much about the appliances as they will soon be replaced over a period of time. Tile backsplashes are available in a variety of colors, sizes and textures, so you easily choose one that matches the paint color of your kitchen area.

Whenever you’re choosing a backsplash, always bear in mind the concept of your kitchen. You don’t want to have a kitchen tile backsplash that doesn’t go well with the other furniture in the room; else it will only look awkward. Remember, these tiles aren’t just there to protect; they can also help spruce up the interior design of the kitchen area. So you better pick the right one.

Why Mirrored Furniture Often Looks Tacky

Filed under Decorating, Furniture | Comments Off

Call me judgmental all you want but the way you choose to decorate the rooms in your home says a whole lot about your personality and how you behave. The furnishings you have in the house, the way you set them up, and the general cleanliness of your house can say anything from: “I’m a working professional and I take my life seriously,” to “I’m a terrible slob and I don’t care how I come off to other people.” Everyone falls somewhere on the broad spectrum of personality traits and everyone’s furniture falls somewhere between well put together and complete and total mess.

To avoid putting off the wrong message you need to take care to decorate your rooms and really strive to achieve the look you want. The general rule of thumb when designing a room is: the simpler the better. Less clutter, more color, and less dirt will make your house (and in some ways, your personality) seem more appealing to other people when they come to visit. Chances are all of the furniture you end up putting in your home is going to be largely determined by budget and practicality but when you do have room to choose you should choose carefully.

Out of all the furniture types in the world, mirrored furniture is often the most difficult to use correctly. If you are trying to get a particular look, whether its art deco, minimalism, Venetian, or what have you, you can use mirrored accent pieces to push you forward into the “well put together” category. However, if you use too much of a good thing you will fall into the “messy” category really quick when using mirrors.

Mirrored furniture, particularly black mirrored furniture, has this terrible tendency to look tacky. When something looks tacky it means that it looks cheap and garish. You never want to come across cheap and garish so you should try to avoid tacky looks at all cost. Mirrored furniture gets tacky when there is too much of it. You don’t want to have a mirrored piece that is completely made out of mirrors and you don’t want to stuff mirrored pieces into every corner of your room.

For helpful information on how to use mirrored furniture correctly check out Mirrored Furniture Gallery.

Kitchen Design, Contemporary Kitchens and Points to Consider

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens | No Comments

Perhaps it is time to redecorate your kitchen to improve your design. Kitchen design, kitchen installation is always done best when you know what you want. Thus, if you are redesigning your country, go on the Internet now and learn about the latest styles that are available.

Main points to consider

Photo galleries are set up on the Internet to give you an idea how your kitchen will look once it has been finished. Thus, the main thing to consider when it comes to kitchen design, kitchen installation is to consider your budget, styles, and what you want from the finished product.

Some of the styles to consider include the contemporary kitchens, country style, old world, outdoor, traditional, and the transitional kitchens.

Transitional kitchen designs may cost a little more than some of the old styles, yet the design is worth considering. Transitional kitchens often include a combination of modern and classic designs. You have a mixture of handmade materials, which include texture and finishes.

Some of the popular transitional kitchens you can consider as examples are the Shaker kitchens, or the Arts and Crafts. In this setting, colored palettes are added to offset bamboo floors, and there is a showcase of panels and lighting.

Old World kitchens often created with huge hearths, distressed, or unfitted cabinets. There is also cooking grottos added to give that old style look. Some of the kitchen designs are created to present a European theme, while others are designed to create a Dutch cottage. Yet, there is the Normandy, Italian Villa look, Chateau French style, Castle, Medieval, Mediterranean, and Tuscan look to consider.

Most of these types of designs are laid out with natural floors made of stone, or mosaic tiles. The wall is designed from either plaster or brick. Sometimes it is offset by copper or pewter accents. Check your budget, as these designs are costly, so when it comes to Kitchen Design, Kitchen Installation consider everything that you need first.

Filed under Budgeting, Decorating, Furniture, Garden | No Comments

With the economy suffering, many people are searching for ways to save money. However, people do not want to give up their creature comforts, such as a beautiful home. A patio is a beautiful place to entertain and relax, and one will want to outfit it comfortably. Fortunately, there are ways to save money on patio furnishings without sacrificing look and charm.

Shopping at a patio cushion clearance is an excellent way to save money instantly. In most cases, there is nothing wrong with the cushions that are on clearance, they have just been overstocked. It is possible to find the same quality at a sale that one would find buying a brand new cushion for twice as much or more.

To find clearances, one should monitor their favorite patio furnishing retailers in their area. Most stores send out weekly flyers that list sales, or send e-mails to customers that want them to notify them of deals. Watching for these announcements can help one get a general idea of what cushions normally cost and which sales are the best value.

Another option is to check a store’s clearance rack or section on a regular basis. Quite often, these sales will not be advertised.

Before buying patio cushions, whether on sale or at regular price, one should examine the quality of the material. It should be strong and made for outdoor use. Many cushions are machine washable or have covers that are, which can save a great deal of hassle when it comes to spills or other messes. Many cushions will be UV rated to stand up to the sun’s rays without fading. It is also a good idea to test the cushion by sitting on it, to make sure it is of a comfortable caliber.

Using Vinyl Decals and Vinyl Lettering as Wall Decor

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

Vinyl decals are the most popular wall decor today.  For one, they are not expensive, easily to use, easy to stick or remove without damaging the walls to your home.  These decals come in different sizes, colors and designs to choose from.  You can choose from standard to custom decals or vinyl lettering for your walls.  You can even make your own designs or quotes adding a personal touch of your decor that will express your personality.

When you want to do your own decals it is important to remember the following things:

  • Consider the size of your design.  Consider the font of your letters if you are going to make your own quotes.  Find the design you would like to use and consider the location where to mount them.  You cut it and this will be your pattern.  Making multiple copies using stencils on thin card boards.
  • Then you do tracings of the letters or design onto the decal paper using a black marker making it clear and seen on the side of vinyl.  The scripts or the design must be backwards.
  • Flip on the contact side then you start filling those using markers and let it dry before you start filling another part to avoid smudge.
  • Then you cut the sides following the contour of your design or the letters.
  • Wait till it dries then you can peel the contact paper off from the corner moving your way slowly down.  While you peel it off, the air bubbles must be smoothed by using a stick then you may apply them on the walls to help adhere them to walls use either a credit or ATM card or better yet a Popsicle stick.

If you prefer to print your own creations using the ink jet printer then follow the top most procedure and then using clean window decals print on them the drawing or image you desire with the personal quote you would like to give meaning to the image you chose.  These can be used on walls or as window stickers in any part of your home.  Remember to use solid colors on the image.

Decorating with Bamboo Beaded Curtains

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

When people think of using bamboo materials for their window coverings, the most common thing that comes to mind is bamboo blinds. However, there is a more colorful and fun alternative called bamboo beaded curtains. They are made by tying colored bamboo beads and other materials into long strands that are hanged side by side. With a little imagination, it is easy to add character and style to your rooms using these type of curtains. Here are some décor tips to help you get going.

Tip one: you can add these beaded curtains on top of what you currently have as your window covering. How you do it is the key. You can start by using contrasting colors that make the room more outstanding. Do note that if you pick the colors that already existed in the room, the effect will be even stronger.  For example, if you have a white vertical blind, you can add a brightly colored beaded curtain that matches your cushion coverings on the sofa. This can help to accent the vibrancy of the room very easily.

Tip two: think of using the beaded curtains as a way to divide a large room. Say you have a large living room that is currently used as a media centre and a book corner at the same time. You can simply put up a curtain that divides the two areas so as to increase the distinctiveness for the two different uses of the room.

Tip three: you can use the beaded curtains as a form of wall decoration. You can pin one side of the curtains to the corner of a room and then create different layouts and patterns using the different strands. By using a little creativity, your wall can be turned into a outstanding piece of decorative wall art in just a few minutes.

However in a country in French country design styles you will often see stripes next with solids and floral prints. This allows you to get a lot of different textures and colors into your space. This could be as simple as just mixing and matching different bathroom accessories for a one-of-a-kind set that will be different than what is already out there.

You might want to soften this look a little bit. This is important just because this can seem quite linear or harsh. You might want to bring in a few natural elements such as placing a vase of hydrangeas on your vanity. This will really bring more of an organic feeling into your space. You could also decorate with different grass wallpapers or mats for more of a Zen vibe. A stripe will really pop against a solid color, but at the same time it won’t really overtake your entire space.

Another thing that you want to consider is your color palette. You can always paint the pattern directly on the walls. You really have a lot of freedom. This allows you to totally make your own pattern and pair colors together that you wouldn’t normally find in most fabrics or wallpaper such as purple or green. Of course you’ll want to keep things a little bit subtle just so that your color palette looks designer instead of juvenile.

Buying Cheap Wall Art: You Won’t Regret It

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

I recently made a great purchase down at Wal-Mart that has completely changed the feel of my living room and my bedroom. Whereas before I was stuck looking at bare white walls that did nothing to enhance my mood, I am now the proud owner of five pieces of cheap pieces of wall art that I couldn’t be happier about purchasing.

The Sunday paper told me that they were having a seasonal clearance sale on just about everything in the store, and framed wall art was half-off. I’d been telling myself that it was time to do something about those walls, so I took a deep breath and decided it was time to save money and to have a little fun picking five already-framed works that I really enjoyed.

For the bedroom I got a print of one of Monet’s water lilies, as well as a ‘Starry Night’ by van Gogh, which has always had a special place in my heart. For the living room I thought I’d take a chance and combine one of the famous Andy Warhol prints of his Campbell’s soup cans with a wonderful Jackson Pollock, one of his hyper-colorful, edgy pieces. I even decided on a print of a painting from the Renaissance by an artist with whom I was unfamiliar, just because the natural setting and the beautiful flowing robes really struck me.

The best part? The bill came in at under $50. I can easily spend that on dinner at a nice restaurant, but I’m going to have all these pieces for many years, and I know that I’ll never get tired of these classic works of art.

If you’ve been putting off decorating bare walls in your home, I encourage you to spend just a little money and get some inexpensive art for your walls. You pay rent or mortgage every month and there’s no reason why all that money should go to a place that is simply your ‘house’ or your ‘apartment’. Think about it: you should be paying towards a ‘home’.

Window Scarf Valance Window Treatments

Filed under Decorating, Windows | No Comments

There are many ways to do it and many styles of window treatments. Some of the more simple designs are often the ones that can give you the greatest return in terms of your home design and décor features.  You don’t always need to go with the most ornate or eccentric pieces.  This is true of many interior home decorating tips.  Often, less is more.  This is as true with the window scarf valance as it is with any window treatment.

Whether you go with blinds or shades, no window valance or one that is custom designed and handmade, your windows do speak much about the design of your space.  You’ll quickly notice this if you haven’t done anything with your windows yet.  They will be drastically changed with the addition of blinds, curtains or, as we’re discussing here, a valance.

The scarf valance is just as the name implies.  It is a piece of fabric that is slung in an attractive way around the curtains and curtain rod to create a nice sweeping look.  Often, the material is a bit more sheer than the curtain panels themselves.  This isn’t a necessary feature, but it will give your curtains more depth.  Other times, the material could be the same fabric as the curtains and just hung and draped around the rod for added effect.

Curtains are one of those features that can add a lot of drama and ambiance to a room.  The color and choice of materials will help to create this look as well.  Think in terms of the type of mood you would like the room to portray.  If in a bedroom, a more velvety and luxurious type of curtain could give you that extra sense of passion.  In a living or family room, having a nice crisp fabric with clean lines can add a touch of class and elegance to your space.  You can use these ideas and then enhance your space with these window scarf valances.

Decorative Boxes With Lids For Your Home

Filed under Decorating, Storage | No Comments

Decorative boxes with lids make a wonderful gift for any holiday or occasion. These boxes can also be fun to make. Most craft stores sell plain wooden or woven boxes that can be decorated in almost any color or style. If giving decorative wooden boxes with lids as a gift, a good idea for crafting them into a memorable and appreciated present is to find out what the person is interested in or what hobbies they may enjoy. For instance , if you are giving decorative boxes with lids to young girls as a gift, you could decorate them with small items such as tiny ballerina figurines that can be purchased at the craft store. If the teen girl especially likes cats or animals you can find a variety of these types of figurines to glue to the box.

Even teen boys and men can enjoy receiving decorative boxes with lids. If they enjoy hobbies such as golfing, the box can be used to store golfing tees, balls, and other items needed for the game. A young fisherman may enjoy a box to hold small bits of fishing tackle in. Boxes for men and teen boys can be decorated using a wide variety of items found in craft stores.

Because decorative boxes come in such a wide variety of shapes and sizes they can be used to hold almost anything. Many women like to use the boxes to hold earrings, ring and necklaces. Teens usually like them to hold treasured mementos such as a classmate’s photograph or notes they want to keep. Many people use decorative boxes to hold odds and ends such as sewing needles, bobbins of thread or thimbles.

Decorative boxes make wonderful gifts for Christmas, birthdays or anniversaries. They can be made specifically for that person or they can be purchased already decorated by professionals such as artists, with very nice scenes painted on the box and lid.

Wall Quotes For Modern Interior Design

Filed under Decorating | No Comments

It is not always simple to find the perfect decorative elements for your walls. Certainly, there are countless choices yet several of them aren’t affordable or exactly what you are going for at any rate.

There’s a fashionable option that may resolve this dilemma, though : vinyl wall quotes and vinyl adhesives.

Wall quotes are employed to exhibit significant and beloved quotes that add more character and refinement to your home. Vinyl decals can supplement the quotes quite well by providing visual imagery which increase the full effect.

Restricting yourself to the specific designs that can be found in mailing order catalogs or web sites is not necessary: a good number of decal vendors allow you to effortlessly invent custom designs and offer your very own sayings and images to complement your present interior decoration.

Choose the kinds of vinyl decals that are quite thin and where every letter, word or picture is separately cut (in such a way that do not have a transparent film on all sides of them). You want your wall decals to seem as if they had been manually painted straight on the wall itself.

Apart from looking very good, wall adhesives have grown to be fashionable for the reason that they are removable and will not hurt your walls when they are taken down. Not all kinds of vinyl decals can be utilized more than once – ask with your shop beforehand if this matters to you.

Since they are so versatile, wall decals are a logic option to embellish a room for a special occasion such as a wedding celebration or a graduation ceremony. They communicate a sense of significance to these valuable passages of life.

Vinyl adhesives are often a sensation with kids who love to modify the décor of their room when they grow older. Tastes change all through the years and vinyl decals will allow you to express that in the decor of your children’s bedroom or playroom.

Even though some decals can be costly – particularly the larger ones – many of them aren’t and it is possible to produce great effects at little cost. Vinyl decals will be able to take you as far as your creativity will permit so it’s up to you to craft expressive wall decors in your home!

7 Ideas For A Fun, Inexpensive Christmas

Filed under Budgeting, Decorating | No Comments

Hoping to cut costs this Christmas season?  There are ways you can cut back on the expense of Christmas yet still have a lot of fun and enjoy the spirit of Christmas.  Here are some ideas that will not only help you save money, will also help you to really enjoy this Christmastime.

Look for Decorations in Thrift Shops:  Did you know that a lot of people like to buy new decorations every year?  If you are looking for good quality, second-hand Christmas decorations you should check out your local thrift shops. Chances are you will find a lot of good quality decorations, for a fraction of the price they would cost to buy new.

Christmas Lights: Do you have someone who is not really all that into decorating, but who loves to hang around and try to help when you are putting up decorations? Put them to use. Buy spare bulbs for your old Christmas lights, and let them methodically work through the lights and replace any bulbs that are not working.  This will give you a good-as-new set of lights without your having to spend much money at all on them.

Broken Baubles and Tree Ornaments: As long as they are not too broken, you can re-use them. If they have lost their string so you can’t hang them on the tree any more, you can still make a very pretty Christmas display with them. Put them all together in a basket, or in a glass bowl and set them on your table, bookshelf or side-table.  They will add a beautiful touch of color and will also add to the festive appearance of your home.

Candles: You don’t have to buy expensive candles for Christmas decorating. Instead buy the simple red, green and white long tapered candles, some clay, and some pine needles or Christmas paper.  Place the candles in the clay and cover the clay with paper or pine needles, or other Christmas material and you will have a lovely candle display to set around the room.

Collect Pine Cones: If you are fortunate to live in an area where you can collect these, do so. Spray paint them silver or gold, and arrange them in areas of the room.  Another great, authentic Christmas decoration that you have to pay barely anything for.

Center Table Piece:  Find a sawn off tree limb, some pine cones and pine needles, buy some Christmas ribbon, clay and a few candles and design your own central display. You can even use some of the Christmas ornaments that have lost their loop and place them on the display as well.  If it is made well enough you can reuse it year after year, just needing to replace the ribbon and the candles.

Dress up Your Child’s Dolls and Teddy-Bears:  A cute Christmas idea is to dress up teddy bears or dolls in Christmas outfits, or at least with Christmas ribbons, and pop them under the tree, or around the room on tables and shelves. They look really cute and the kids love to help with this too.

To add to the festive season, you can also play Christmas music around the house when you are working, cooking, or at mealtimes.  Get a few people together to bake Christmas cookies and have a glass of wine or drink hot chocolate together at the same time.  Watch old Christmas movies on television. Above all, enjoy your Christmas season and be sure to spread lots of Christmas cheer! The world needs all it can get! Happy Holidays!

The Latest Colors For Kitchen Curtains

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens, Windows | No Comments

The fashion and interior design magazines will always tell you the latest colors for this and that. Brown is the new black. Ivory is the new white. Purple is the latest shade for walls. But when it comes to kitchen curtains you don’t have to listen to any of it. You don’t have to care what the best dressed kitchens are wearing. All that matters is what will go with your kitchen.

In fact, if you like, you can forget about theory altogether and just take yourself to the curtain department of a large store, the kind with rows and rows of curtain fabrics ready to be made up to your specifications. Just browse through the racks of fabrics and you will quickly see that there are some curtain fabrics which are plainly unsuitable for kitchen curtains (because they are too precious, too fancy, too formal or just plain not washable) as well as some where the colors will clash horribly with your kitchen.

Hopefully you will also find some curtains for your kitchen that you like and which you know will suit your room. These curtains will be in the right color spectrum (either warm or cool tones) to match your kitchen in general and they will have colors which tie in with your walls, units and/or accessories to give a coherent look to your decoration. For example, if your units are painted duck egg blue then look for a pattern which contains duck egg blue within it. If you have a beautiful mosaic wall tile in fall shades then look for those colors in your curtains.

If you are not sure what to choose ask for samples of a few fabrics that you think may be suitable and take them home so that you can consider them right in your kitchen. After a few days one is sure to strike you as the best option or pop into another store and browse a new set of fabrics!
