Oval Rugs Make Great Accents for Many Rooms

Filed under Decorating, Flooring | No Comments

Oval rugs make ideal accents for many rooms in the home. They are so varied that you can choose a color theme and material of your choice, whether you want a product made of high quality materials or one that is easy to clean and maintain.  They are available in many prices ranges as well

This shape is not as common as the others. However, you can still find a suitable product for the home in bed and bath stores, major retailers and even in some discount stores. Items can consist of natural or synthetic fibers, depending on what works best for your particular situation.

Braided oval rugs are still available today, although you may remember one from your grandmother’s house or in a weekend cottage. They are durable and relatively low maintenance. The newer products of today include many more vibrant color schemes, which are much different from the products previously designed in mostly muted tones.

Wool oval rugs are very durable, soft to the touch and warm. They often need to be professionally cleaned, but can last for decades with proper care. A large piece in a living room seating area can add a very elegant touch to the space and become the focal point of the room.

Using this item in the dining room is great for drawing attention to the dining set or special features. It can be used under similarly shaped tables, as well as with those of a rectangular construction. There are products in many stain resistant materials that are more suitable for use in an eating area.

If you need something more modern, contemporary rugs are offer plenty of variety. You can choose a block pattern to bring out a few less obvious colors in the room.  An abstract design may be useful in rooms with modern furniture that need a splash of color.

Unfinished Oak Flooring Pros and Cons

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

Your choice in wood plank flooring depends largely on how much you can afford to spend and what effect you wish to achieve.  One of the popular choices is unfinished oak flooring, and like other types of flooring, it has its own share of pros and cons.

Pros

Strength

Oak is a very sturdy type of wood which is why it is preferred by many carpenters and professional floor installers.  Even in its unfinished state, oak floors are very reliable and can be expected to last a very long time, making your investment worth its cost.

Rustic Appeal

Using unfinished wood plank flooring can also have a rustic and vintage feel which would be a great contrast with modern homes.  If you are going for a moderately contemporary design for the interiors, this flooring would fits just right.

Affordability

Unfinished floors are less expensive than finished ones so a significant amount of money can be saved when electing the former.

Cons

In general, unfinished floors are more prone to scratches and stains.  You should consider this fact before you make the decision.  You might also want to consider the upkeep of unfinished floors to keep them in great condition.

Large versus Small Planks

There is always a debate when it comes to choosing between large or small wood plank flooring.  Of course both have certain advantages as well as disadvantages but what it comes down to is what you want your home to look like.  Your choice in flooring will greatly affect the general feel of the entire house so giving it more thought is necessary before starting construction.

Cost Considerations

Oak is considered as among the pricey type of wood.  However, you can  get excellent deals if you buy online especially when you place a bulk order. Sellers usually give discounts to customers who order a large number of merchandise.

Garage Floor Covering Options

Filed under Flooring, Garages | No Comments

Laying down a garage floor covering helps to protect and prolong the life of your garage floor. There are different options to choose from such as epoxies, paint or rubberized covering that lock together. Costs will vary for covering your garage floor depending on the size of your particular floor and the type of covering you choose.

Epoxies are a great way to protect your floor. They come in different colors and make your floor smooth and clean looking. They make the floor very easy to clean such as mopping up oil spills or fluids. Preparation and application are usually very easy though it can take some work. You should first clean your floor of any impurities with muriatic acid or other equivalent material. Once floor is clear of items and clean, you can apply the epoxy. It takes a couple gallons at about 100 dollars to do a 800 squarefoot garage floor though cost will vary depending on size. Epoxies usually take about 24 hours to cure enough to walk on and 48 to drive your car on.

Painting your garage floor is perhaps the simplest covering you can do. Preparation is the same as for epoxies however floor paint can be cheaper than epoxy or other coverings. The benefits are that it is also easier to clean and dust and dirt are kept from going into the air as they adhere to the paint after it has dried. If floors are not prepared properly for paint or epoxy, the covering will tend to come up sooner. This is especially true if you have oil spills that have soaked into the cement.

Cool solutions for covering your garage floor are ribbed garage floor mats. These are large or sections mats that have ribs or circles molded into them for traction. They are usually very thin and either roll on in one large piece or can be locked into each other using smaller squares. This is by far the best and most expensive covering for a garage. It completely protects the floor from heavy equipment being moved or dropped and from the elements. It is just like carpet for your garage only the material is usually rubber. These covering retail from about 200 to 400 dollars and can be more depending on the manufacturer and the size of your garage

No matter what you choose there are a variety of coverings out there in the market today. Protect Your Garage Floor Tiles Today

Filed under Flooring, Garages | No Comments

Garage is a part of a house that is designed for storing a car although it can also be a place for storing tools, lawn mowers and other home equipments. Garage flooring is typically made out of concrete floors that are unfinished. It isn’t uncommon to  find garage floor tiles, or mats on ones floor. Since it is a place that can be used for many things, it can easily become dirty and this is why a garage can be one of the most overlooked areas in a house. Garage floors are also one of the most used areas in a garage which is why it needs to be constantly maintained. Here are few helpful guidelines that will definitely help in protecting your own garage floor.

There are a lot of flooring solutions for garage floors that are out in the market today. Popular products for protecting these type of floors are polyurethane, epoxy and latex paints. Polyurethane is better than epoxy because it can protect the floor from chemical spills or any type of stubborn stains although unlike epoxy, polyurethane needs an epoxy primer which will serve as the floor’s first coat. Epoxy on the other hand may be a durable coating but like any other product it may also have spin-offs because this type of coating can lose the gloss and can turn yellow especially if it is regularly exposed to the sun.

Latex paints are the most affordable ones but like epoxy too much exposure from the sunlight may cause damage and this is why it is advised to apply with another protective layer of coat over it. Coating a concrete garage floor is one of the best ways of protecting it from different types of elements such as dust, dirt and many more. Basically coating includes cleaning the floor with a concrete cleaner, which is a good stain remover and when the floor is dry, the coat can finally be applied. Coating may be a difficult undertaking especially if it is not done properly. Just be sure to follow the product’s instructions and cautions for better results.

Walnut Flooring vs Oak Flooring for Your Dream Home

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

The fragile state of our economy has caused a lot of homeowners to reassess their plans to sell their house and move up to something more in line with their dream home. While things seem to be starting to stabilize and the real estate market is showing signs of movement, many Americans have decided to stay where they are and create the home they want through upgrades and remodeling.

While redoing the kitchen with new appliances, cabinets and countertops, installing that Jacuzzi tub in the master bath or converting the basement into a media room will always top many lists, probably the most popular place to start is the flooring. Watching them install a wall-sized high-definition television will certainly generate a lot of excitement, but there is very little that will add more long term value to your home than ripping out those carpets and installing hardwood floors.

There is a major difference that needs to be considered when making the decision for wood flooring. When you’re picking out that new refrigerator or TV, you know that thee is a limit as to how long it will last and that you will be replacing it with a newer and better model in a few years. That is not usually the case with wood floors. Because of this, it’s very important to choose a type of wood that will complement your preference in décor and match your lifestyle.

The denser varieties such as oak and walnut hardwood flooring are much better suited to families with active lifestyles. While oak has a higher hardness rating than American Walnut, the Brazilian Walnut tree produces the densest wood available for flooring. Beyond durability, each type of hardwood has a different character and the color variations are considerable.

Whether you choose the classic, warm glow of an oak floor or the vibrant richness of walnut or another of the hardwoods is a choice that only you can make. For those who intend to create the home they plan to stay in for perhaps the rest of their lives, this is no small decision. The best advice is to find examples close to what you are considering. Never make your choice based on a color chart or even a sample. Always see how it lays out in a room.

With research and patience, your hardwood floor upgrade may be the best investment you ever make in your home.

Getting a Carpet Steam Cleaner: My Experience

Filed under Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

About a year ago I sold my apartment and moved into my first proper home with my now fiancé. While I was preparing my apartment for sale I decide that the carpets definitely needed a good cleaning if I was going to make the place look good to potential buyers. I called up a local cleaning company who were very helpful and reasonable; to be fair the apartment wasn’t that large so it was never going to be a big job. I can definitely recommend this type of service when you are looking to sell a property. Their cleaning really gave a lift to the look of the place and with a quick re paint of the walls the apartment sold quickly.

Our new home was considerably larger than my bachelor apartment and was carpeted throughout and after about six months it was clear that giving the carpets and rugs that we had a good team clean was going to have to become a regular event, certainly as far as my girlfriend was concerned. While I would have loved to get the professionals in every three months our household budget just didn’t extend to such luxuries.

My friend David mentioned that he had had a lot of success renting a carpet steam cleaner and so I decided to give it a go. My first run was far from a qualified success. The machine I rented wasn’t the most up to date and didn’t come with much in the way of instructions. The net result wasn’t a disaster but it certainly wasn’t up to professional standards. I ended up getting the carpets very damp and it took over a week before the carpets were entirely dry. Of course walking around on wet carpets, as well as being uncomfortable, only got them dirty before they were dry and the chemical smell was pretty strong. Also I think I must have used too much cleaning solution because even when the carpets died out there was still a strong odor and the floors felt a bit sticky with residue. The final disappointment was that although cheaper than a professional service, renting still wasn’t that cheap and was a bit of a hassle to organize.

Thankfully another friend of mine, Tim, had the perfect solution. He’d gone out and bought himself a domestic upright steam cleaner. It looked like a pimped up vacuum cleaner and very space age with all its different attachments but he swore by it and I was convinced. With his help, I navigated my way through all the different brands and models and ended up buying a Bissell steam cleaner that did all the jobs I needed. This particular model was even good for cleaning the tiled floor in the kitchen. Although close to $300 it has definitely been a wise purchase. I can tackle all the cleaning jobs around the house and the very detailed instructions and clever features means I haven’t damaged any surfaces.

If you have the storage room for such a machine and can get the full use of all the different attachments it is definitely worth the initial outlay. Shop around for the best price and also take the time to research the right cleaning solutions as well.

I’ve found two great sites for more information on carpet cleaning. The first is a site called Carpet Steam Cleaner Solution.com with all sorts of advice and the second is  Carpet Cleaning Solution.org which deals specifically with cleaning detergents.

Will An Epoxy Garage Floor Coating Work?

Filed under Flooring, Garages | No Comments

There are many options available for treating a garage floor to seal and protect it.  Although an acrylic garage floor coating will give a nice shine for a short length of time it is really not tough enough for vehicular traffic.  Acrylic floor coatings are designed for covering many types of flooring including vinyl, fired tiles, and concrete but they are designed to protect against light to medium foot traffic.

In order to get full protection for your garage floor, and also apply an added anti-slip material, your best bet would be to apply a two part epoxy coating.  Epoxy is a very tough and durable product which is composed of a resin and hardener.  For a comparison on how hard an epoxy floor coating is just think of fiberglass like pleasure boats are constructed of.  This is an epoxy resin and hardener which is applied over a woven mesh for structural support.  The actual toughness of the shell is formed by the chemical bond between the epoxy which is activated when the hardener is mixed in.

An epoxy garage floor coating is easy to apply for the weekend do-it-yourselfer and it takes about two half days of actual labor.  The first day is devoted to cleaning and degreasing the existing floor surface.  Start with a good quality degreaser product to be sure you have remnants of petroleum scrubbed off the surface.  Next, use a floor detergent and stiff floor broom to clean all other the degreaser and stains off.  At this point spray water on the surface and make sure the water does not bead up.  If it does you need to degrease and clean this area some more because the epoxy will not bond.  Now let it dry overnight, preferably with a space heater.

The next day start by mixing enough epoxy to cover about a 6’ by 6’ area and spread it in the farthest corner from the door (you don’t want to literally paint yourself into a corner).  Spread the mixture with a nap roller and when this batch is applied, cast the non-slip additive over the top as if you were feeding chickens.  Repeat this procedure for each area till you get finished.

You can walk on the floor in about a day but wait three days before driving on it.

Frieze Carpet: The Pros and Cons of Using Frieze Carpeting

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

There are many benefits to choosing frieze carpeting and not many disadvantages. This type of carpet is a very popular choice because of those advantages. It has been nicknamed Shag and California Shag because of the appearance. Frieze carpet is made with fibers that twist together, which gives it the unruly appearance of shag that so many people love.

Advantages:
This carpet is very durable and has a long life span if maintained appropriately with routine vacuuming and cleaning. If you have children or pets, it is a great option because it hides dirt, soil, stains, and heavy traffic use very well. It does come in solid colors that opposes its ability to hide stains. But even solid  colors in frieze hide dirt more than other types of single loop or straight cut carpets. The flecked version of this style of carpeting hides dirt very well. This does however pose a problem for those that are forgetful. Because this type of carpet doesn’t look dirty, many forget the need for vacuuming. Vacuuming weekly or biweekly helps keep the carpet clean, even when it doesn’t look dirty in the first place, and also helps keep the carpet in good condition-making it last longer. Frieze comes in many different colors and styles that allow homeowners to create a look they want and find a color that matches with their current furniture and wood (cabinets, tables, etc).

Disadvantages:
Although frieze carpet is a top choice, there are some disadvantages. It is more expensive than some other types of carpeting like non-textured carpets. However, because of the durability, many prefer to spend a little more in the beginning then having to worry about replacing it that much sooner, or spending more time maintaining it and worry about stains. Also, frieze can be made with different fibers, and with these fibers there are advantages and disadvantages. Nylon is a main choice because of the strength, but also is more expensive. It also comes in PET, and polyester fibers. These last two choices aren’t as resilient, stain resistant, and as long lasting as Nylon. But they are less expensive. Overall, frieze carpet does have more advantages than disadvantages and is a great choice for carpeting.

Choose Travertine Tile For Your Bathroom

Filed under Bathrooms, Flooring | No Comments

When you are in the design stages of redecorating your bathroom then you are going to find there are so many choices to be made that it can be hard to pick individual pieces that will come together to create a beautiful finished product. I find it helps to do each part of your shopping individually and build on what you have already chosen to hopefully find everything works well together. How many times have you visited someones home to find that every item looks are if it was picked with no thought to how well it would fit in? This is definitely someone you want to avoid if you want to get the best value with your efforts.

I always like to start with what I am going to put on the floor and the walls when I am redecorating as this is one of the places I spend the most money, and if you get this part right everything else is going to pick itself. For a bathroom this is going to mean getting tiles for both floor and walls so already your job is becoming a little easier.

I have a particular affinity with travertine tile which many people haven’t heard of but which add a real touch of class to your home at an affordable price. An when I say affordable I mean compared to buying something like marble instead, which may require you to re-mortgage your home. Travertine tiles will still take up a sizable portion of your budget but the ambiance it adds to the bathroom will mean it is worth every penny.

Travertine wall tiles have a beautiful pitted nature and, being 100% naturally formed, every piece if individual, allowing you to create a truly unique room. And with the idea of what floor and wall tiles you are using you will find it so much easier to go on to the other areas which need your attention such as the shower enclosure and the style of taps you need to get the look you want.

Beautiful Wide Plank Flooring: Tips For Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

Although refinishing hardwood floors can be a bit time-consuming if you do the job yourself, it can really save you a lot of money, and the results can be beautiful. Even if your floors are in bad shape, such as if your wide plank wood flooring has become worn and damaged, the efforts you spend on your hardwood floors refinishing project will pay off big with a shiny new look for your previously worn-looking flooring.

The first step to hardwood floors refinishing is to first remove all of the furniture from the room, and then remove any carpeting or throw rugs. In order to prevent injury or possible damage to the equipment, inspect the flooring carefully for any loose nails, and make sure to use a countersink to pound them below the surface of the wood flooring.

Depending on your level of skills, you will need to determine whether to use a drum sander or an orbital sander designed for hardwood floor refinishing. Although a drum sander works fast, it sometimes can be difficult and heavy to handle, and could cause you to sand more wood off the floor than you actually intended. If you are renting a sander from a rental shop, see if you can get a demonstration of both first, so that you can better decide what might be best for you. You will also need an edge sander for getting close to the edges of the room.

When using a floor sander, always make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Basic tips for using a sander involve always keeping the sander moving, to avoid over-sanding the floor, and following the grain of the wood. This means if you have flooring such as wide plank wood flooring, you will want to follow the pattern of the boards until you have the entire floor sanded. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper, then sand the floor again with a medium grit. Use the edge sander, fill in any cracks or dents with wood putty, let dry, and then sand once last time with fine grit sandpaper. Make sure to vacuum thoroughly to remove all dust.

Once the floor has been carefully sanded and cleaned, you can re-stain the wood floor, using a rag to apply it with the grain, and a second rag to remove the excess stain, changing to a new rag when it becomes too wet. After allowing the stain to dry overnight, or according to the manufacturer’s directions, you can apply the final wood finish, usually in several coats, allowing it to dry thoroughly between coats.

Finding Cheap Laminate Flooring

Filed under Flooring | No Comments

Contrary to what many people believe, hardwood floors and cheap laminate wood flooring are not the same material. Laminate floors are the artificial materials used to look like hardwoods that are more stain resistant, scratch resistant, and impact resistant and protected against fading by sunlight.

Cheap laminate wood flooring comes in three types. The first requires the installer to use special glue in the tongue and grooves of each plank. Glueless floating laminate floors use snap-fit technology to come together. Most cheap laminate wood flooring is this kind of flooring. There is also the kind of laminate floor that is pre-glued in the factory and allows the installer to moisten the planks and fit them into the grooves of a matching plank.

The floating installation method used for cheap laminate wood flooring simply refers to the fact that most of these floor systems are installed right on top of a subfloor that can be made of plywood, concrete flooring, vinyl slabs, or some other material. You will never have to glue these floors down.

After they are installed, these do-it-yourself systems do not need polishing or waxing. They are pretreated with different kinds of finishes. There are two drawbacks to cheap laminate wood flooring that homeowners should be aware of: they do not perform very well in excessive moisture and because they are noisy when walked on, they usually require underlayment padding to snuff down the sound.

Cheap hardwood flooring is natural and non-allergenic. There are basically two types: solid wood floors and engineered wood floors. Solid wood systems are installed by nailing down the floor to a wood subfloor.

Glueless engineered cheap hardwood flooring requires installation techniques similar to that of laminate flooring. Installation requires gluing, stapling, floating or nailing down the floor for all systems. Engineered floors are much less responsive to humidity than solid wood floors. Hardwood floors can be unfinished or prefinished (also called factory finished).

If you are looking for the perfect visual appeal, almost any of these systems can be designed to fit your needs. Cheap laminate wood flooring is excellent at resisting most of the things that it will have to endure. It, however, does not look as good as prefinished engineered hardwood floors.

The life expectancy for both tops the 20-year mark, with engineered hardwood lasting for 25 years. What is the best feature for both the hardwood and the cheap laminate wood flooring systems is that if you want to spend most of your money on materials and not pay as much for labor, they each are do-it-yourself and quite easy to install.

A Great Hardwood Floor Vacuum Review

Filed under Appliances, Cleaning, Flooring | No Comments

Finding a great hardwood floor vacuum can be a tough thing. I know how it goes sometimes. You go to the store only to find a number of vacuums that somewhat fit your needs, but not completely. This can be extremely frustrating for someone who’s leading a busy life with a family. You can’t take large amounts of time out of your schedule to go shopping around from store to store. You need to know which vacuum is going to clean your floor the best, and you need to know where you can get it. No worries! We’ll help.

I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about the Eureka Boss SmartVac line of hardwood floor vacuums. Based on a very popular online survey site, this vacuum came out at the top spot in a comparison done between almost 40 different types of vacuums. These were compared by seeing how much dirt and debris was picked up on a hardwood floor surface. Beating out that much competition is a pretty hefty honor; you’d be doing yourself a favor by checking this vacuum out.

What are some of the pros and cons of this Eureka Boss vacuum? Well, one of the big pros is the fact that it’s absolutely wonderful at picking up dust and pet dander. Considering those are two of the things many people are allergic to, getting rid of these is paramount. Hardwood floors don’t attract as much as a carpet would, but you’d be surprised at how much of that sticks around on hardwood. But, with a pro there’s almost always a con. But, this may not be a show stopper for you: This vacuum is extraordinarily heavy. It weighs just over 20 pounds, which may make it difficult to haul up and down flights of stairs. It’ll move with a bit of muscle, but for smaller people this may prove a challenge.

Even with the weight issue, I still think this is one of the best hardwood floor vacuum cleaners on the market.
