European and American Console Table Furniture Styles

Filed under Tables | No Comments

The narrow console table is a popular furniture style that is often used in the hallway where space is short but you can also make use of it anywhere you need to fill in an area with a functional yet compact table.

The glass half moon styles tend to be of European design and therefore are easiest to find in Scandinavian and UK furniture shops, both online and in showrooms. The most popular North American designs are the mission console table styles that are rectangular in shape and usually have a wood or metal framework that’s very simple. Many of the contemporary furniture designers in New York and other US cities incorporate the minimalist ideas of glass or transparent plexi into the traditional mission console table designs that were once all wood. The most affordable models still remain those made from pine or unfinished wood and are often under $100. The contemporary or modern art versions with glass and metal in the mission style will be more expensive, from around $200 to $500 or more.

Decorating With Console Tables

Whether you choose an American classic mission console table in wood or a modern version in glass will largely depend on how the rest of the room is decorated. Since these little tables serve primarily a decorative function, you may want to select a piece that will contrast the other furniture while still keeping with the general theme. For example if you have a minimalist room, you may want a half moon glass console table with colored or mirrored glass instead of a plain transparent top, or you may choose a design with elaborate curved or scrolled legs to contrast the straight lines of the rest of the room. Likewise a country classic wood décor will require a wooden mission console table to match the general theme, but make it stand out by selecting a piece that has wrought iron accent legs or a glass top, or some small detail like knobs or drawer handles that add contrast.
