Choosing Fireplace Grates

When it comes to designing a new fireplace or buying accessories for an existing one, most people think of options such as what the fireplace surround will look like, whether it will have a mantle or not and what type of fireplace accessories will look good with the fireplace, such as the pokers, holders for logs, screens, and so forth.  What many people don’t consider, however, is the type of fireplace grate that is used for their fireplace, but the type you choose does make a difference.

For example, the first thing you need to consider is the size of your grate.  After all, you have to make sure that the grate you buy will not be too large to fit properly within the opening of your fireplace, but you also want to make sure it is not too small either.  There should be a small amount of room on either side of the grate so that the logs are not touching the sides, but other than that, as long as the grate is smaller than the firebox, you should be okay.

You also want to consider the material the grate is made from.  Some are made from wrought iron, while others are made from stainless steel or other types of metal.  As with most other things in life, the more you spend on your grate, usually the more durable the material and the longer it will last.  It is worth spending a bit more to get a quality grate so it lasts for a long time.  After all, your grate is subjected to extreme temperatures on a regular basis and needs to be able to stand up to the heat.

There’s not much difference between the types of grates you would buy for indoor fireplaces as compared to outdoor ones, since either way, your main concern is that it can tolerate the heat, and if it can do that, it can usually hold up to other weather conditions as well.
