If you’re looking for a new mattress to sleep on, then you have likely come to the realization that the conventional mattress might be quite a bit overpriced for what you actually get. Sure, some of those mattresses are extremely comfortable, but $1,200 USD for a full? That kind of money could be much better spent on a fine quality futon mattress and all sorts of bedding accessories and covers. You could even have a custom made bed frame to go along with your new futon for that kind of money.
The one thing that gives most people pause when they consider the purchase of a new futon is the quality of the mattress. For some reason, there is still this lingering idea or notion of a flattened mattress in some corner of a dorm room somewhere. Maybe you even slept on such a mattress back in the day. If you did, congratulations for coming back around to the futon again to give it another chance!
Futon mattresses of today are nothing like what they were in the past. Well, that isn’t exactly true, they are similar. What has improved is both their quality and the materials with which they are made. The modern futon mattress is made of much better materials for a longer lasting, supportive mattress. The manufacturers of traditional mattresses have also entered the futon market, giving some much needed competition to the overseas-dominated futon bed world.
It has come a long way from its humble beginnings from the East. Many Asian countries, like Japan, still utilize the futon as one of their primary sleeping arrangements. There have been some Western influences, but it is still quite popular to see the futon mattresses being beaten out in the morning and hung out to air until the next night’s sleep beckons.

When you are in the market for a new bed in the guest room, consider buying a futon bed. We’re all trying to save money these days and a futon is a great economical addition to the house.
As you probably know, futons started out with a simple design — usually a wooden base and a simple mattress. These days they are more elaborate. There is even a futon bunk bed design! So finding the right style for the guest room is easy.
First, as with any furniture shopping, set your price before you start. If you don’t, you will be swayed into spending more than you want either by a salesman or buy your own desire for bigger and better.
You can find a good futon for less than $300. It is nice that you are not buying a mattress that needs to be super-duper because this is a guest room. No one is going to be sleeping on the bed night after night. So the mattress (which for a regularly used futon will matter the most) is less important. That means you can spend less money.
Futon beds are perfect for a guest room because they are convertible. They can spend 99% of the time as a couch and then, when you need it, it becomes a bed. How much more econimical can you get? This is also why the futon bunk bed design is so great. It is perfect for the kids’ room. He can sleep up top and below is a couch until he has a friend sleep over. A bunk bed could look a little weird in the guest room, but it might be another good option. If you have an extra television or game console in the guest room, the bunk bed gives you that playful dorm room feel that might work in your house.
You might spend $200 on a guest bed, so why not consider buying options with a futon bed? You can keep it as a couch, if for no other reason than it gives you more room in the guest room. Beds are so boring and stationary — at least with a futon, you can have a versatile room.
