Apron Sinks and Glass Sinks: Popular Sinks of Today

Filed under Kitchens | No Comments

Sinks can be surprisingly distinctive. Currently, you will find two types of sinks most popular right now. Glass sinks, also known as glass vessel sinks, are currently at the top of popular of sink choices. They are attractive and resilient. There is an extensive list of choices in color, shapes and sizes. They are available in patterns as well. An apron sink, or farmhouse sink, is very practical as well as appealing. It is currently in use in contemporary kitchens and offers a country charm.

A glass sink is shaped as a large bowl and is unique. There are three main types of glass sinks. Blown glass sinks are heated and blown to shape through the end of a pipe then annealed or slowly cooled to ensure hardiness. Mosaic sinks are glass pieces glued separately to an annealed bowl before being grouted and sealed. Fused and slumped sinks are pieces melted together and then heated to the shape of a mold.

The basin of the apron sink has more depth than a typical sink, allowing extra room to soak many large pots and utensils. This feature was needed when the sink was first designed for large families on farms. The popularity of these sinks dropped off with the decline of farms. Today, they are making a comeback and a wide selection is now available. One of options of the apron sink today can be the traditional single basin or it can sport a double bowl.

Another distinctive feature is the apron of the sink. The apron sits slightly raised above the countertop level and extends just passed the counter edge and lays about the height of the sink down the front of the cabinetry. This characteristic allows any water coming over the edge to drip onto the floor instead of the countertop or into crevices where it cannot dry as easily. Mold, staining, or rotting can occur if this happens. Additionally, faucets are not typically built into the sink itself, but instead rise over the back of the sink through the countertop. This makes replacement convenient because there is no need to separate the faucets or disconnect the water.

Whether you are going through a full blown bathroom rehab, or just updating some things about your bathroom, one way to get a huge impact with a fairly small item is to switch to a glass bathroom sink. No matter what your choice of style is for this small room, adding a new sink is one way to update both the style as well as the function of the room. If you are unfamiliar with glass sinks, spend some time online and see how they are made. The fear of your sink not being strong enough to hold up to daily use is simply not true. Modern glass sinks are very strong, and other than abuse or thermal shock, there is nothing to worry about as far as strength goes. Thermal shock is when glass goes from one extreme temperature to another opposite extreme in temperature. For example, if you filled your sink with ice and left it for quite a while, then took the ice out and quickly poured boiling water into the sink, you might be able to produce thermal shock and crack the glass. Obviously this is not a real life concern, so don’t fear glass sinks for strength reasons.

Some of the most beautiful sinks on the market are made of glass, and glass bathroom sinks usually top that list. The reason is the bathroom is a place you can use a vessel sink, and glass vessel sinks are simply stunning. Both the inside and outside of the sink bowl are on display with a vessel sink, so you really have a chance to show off what could very well end up being the style center piece of your bathroom. With the right sink selection in your bathroom, you just may accomplish what might seem far fetched; having your bathroom sink be the topic of conversation among your guests even after they leave your home!
