Planning a New Bathroom Remodeling Project

Filed under Bathrooms, Renovations | No Comments

Bathroom remodeling and renovation will not only enhance the enjoyment of your home, but will also enhance your home’s value when you plan to sell. Bathroom renovation is often considered the best way to get a good return on investment. Homeowners can take pleasure in their bathroom from the time they renovate until the time they choose to sell the house. The following outlines some useful steps in the process of renovating the bathroom

Measuring:

In preparing the design of the renovation project, be sure to make appropriate measurements and then form a map or plan with which to work with. Mark the position of any pipes and mark the position of fixtures and fittings. This will allow you to make accurate layout plans. The secret to a great bathroom design is good initial planning and this process will allow you to map out exactly where you want your fixtures and accessories to be.

Function followed by form:

It is essential when designing the bathroom to put function above form. It does not matter how beautiful your bathroom is, if you have abad design that makes your bathroom difficult or uncomfortable to use, you will not enjoy it. Most bathrooms are small, so if the function is not carefully considered it can sometimes make the room virtually unusable. In your  design process, you need to reflect on what functions you want the bathroom to meet and work towards this goal.

Plumbing fixtures:

Make sure you know exactly where to place the fixtures and fittings when you plan your bathroom remodel. Your toilet, sink and tub will normally remain in exactly the same position they are in now, unless you can move the plumbing. Moving the plumbing could add considerable expense to your project and will require you to employ the services of a professional. I would advise not to undertake any plumbing yourself unless you are very experienced. Water leaks can be very costly and damaging.

Consider your budget

The scale of the bathroom remodeling project will largely depend on the budget you have. If you find you have a lot of money to renovate your bathroom, you can design your bathroom from scratch. However, you can always renew your bathroom, even on a small budget by replacing some of the decorative features such as bathroom furniture, accessories and light fixtures.

Kitchen Design, Contemporary Kitchens and Points to Consider

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens | No Comments

Perhaps it is time to redecorate your kitchen to improve your design. Kitchen design, kitchen installation is always done best when you know what you want. Thus, if you are redesigning your country, go on the Internet now and learn about the latest styles that are available.

Main points to consider

Photo galleries are set up on the Internet to give you an idea how your kitchen will look once it has been finished. Thus, the main thing to consider when it comes to kitchen design, kitchen installation is to consider your budget, styles, and what you want from the finished product.

Some of the styles to consider include the contemporary kitchens, country style, old world, outdoor, traditional, and the transitional kitchens.

Transitional kitchen designs may cost a little more than some of the old styles, yet the design is worth considering. Transitional kitchens often include a combination of modern and classic designs. You have a mixture of handmade materials, which include texture and finishes.

Some of the popular transitional kitchens you can consider as examples are the Shaker kitchens, or the Arts and Crafts. In this setting, colored palettes are added to offset bamboo floors, and there is a showcase of panels and lighting.

Old World kitchens often created with huge hearths, distressed, or unfitted cabinets. There is also cooking grottos added to give that old style look. Some of the kitchen designs are created to present a European theme, while others are designed to create a Dutch cottage. Yet, there is the Normandy, Italian Villa look, Chateau French style, Castle, Medieval, Mediterranean, and Tuscan look to consider.

What to Avoid with Leather Rugs

Filed under Rugs | No Comments

Leather rugs make quite a powerful statement on your floor. They say that you like natural materials and that you have an appreciation for beauty and texture. They give your room a touch of luxury too and quite a bit of comfort. But they are not without their problems. Here are the main things to avoid when purchasing and using these floor rugs :-

1. Buying the Wrong Style

If you have a traditional interior then look for a traditional style rug. A natural cowhide rug goes well in many traditional interiors as these rugs have been produced for so many years. Contemporary settings would do better with leather shag rugs which are one of the latest trends in rugs.

2. Not Considering the Color

Natural colored rugs go best with natural colored rooms. If your room is all black and white do not add a natural brown rug. Hide rugs are generally available as printed rugs but the printed ones are usually in natural colors too. If you want a brightly colored rug choose a dyed leather shag rug or avoid leather rugs altogether.

3. Putting Your Rug in the Wrong Room

A leather rug is only suitable for some rooms in your home. Do not think about using such a rug in a kitchen or bathroom as the damp conditions will cause it to deteriorate very rapidly. Also the style of them is more suited to living rooms than the softer look required in a bedroom.

4. Not Looking After Your Rug

Leather rugs don’t take too much looking after (provided that you don’t subject them to water as mentioned above) but you also need to take care that your rug does not dry out by overheating or fade because of too much sunlight. Other than that, avoid spills which can stain your rug and cause it to need specialist cleaning and be gentle when using the vacuum cleaner favoring the upholstery tool rather than the normal carpet cleaning head.

The Latest Colors For Kitchen Curtains

Filed under Decorating, Kitchens, Windows | No Comments

The fashion and interior design magazines will always tell you the latest colors for this and that. Brown is the new black. Ivory is the new white. Purple is the latest shade for walls. But when it comes to kitchen curtains you don’t have to listen to any of it. You don’t have to care what the best dressed kitchens are wearing. All that matters is what will go with your kitchen.

In fact, if you like, you can forget about theory altogether and just take yourself to the curtain department of a large store, the kind with rows and rows of curtain fabrics ready to be made up to your specifications. Just browse through the racks of fabrics and you will quickly see that there are some curtain fabrics which are plainly unsuitable for kitchen curtains (because they are too precious, too fancy, too formal or just plain not washable) as well as some where the colors will clash horribly with your kitchen.

Hopefully you will also find some curtains for your kitchen that you like and which you know will suit your room. These curtains will be in the right color spectrum (either warm or cool tones) to match your kitchen in general and they will have colors which tie in with your walls, units and/or accessories to give a coherent look to your decoration. For example, if your units are painted duck egg blue then look for a pattern which contains duck egg blue within it. If you have a beautiful mosaic wall tile in fall shades then look for those colors in your curtains.

If you are not sure what to choose ask for samples of a few fabrics that you think may be suitable and take them home so that you can consider them right in your kitchen. After a few days one is sure to strike you as the best option or pop into another store and browse a new set of fabrics!
